Bought a JP Australia 10'8" Fusion today.

Already had a paddle, even though it was after a 2 1/2 hr drive home.

Got a Naish Mahani, 108 sq inch paddle, but it doesn't seem to have much propulsion. Are there bigger/better paddles?
I really noticed it when I turned around to paddle against the nor'easter that sprang up.

Might it have something to do with the surf focus of the board, or the 34" width?

Whatever, I'm in the water!

I can't talk SUP expertise, but in terms of paddle effectiveness I'd look at your technique first, paddle face second.

Had little surf today.

Harder than it looks!

Hmm. More effort than grace.('')

Always hard to paddle against the wind.....board looks to have a pointy nose with quite a bit of rocker.
Am sure you will be a winner in slightly bigger surf

Thanks for the reassurance.
.
I'm fairly sure the rocker and the width is slowing the paddle speed. Same as paddling a positive rocker surfboard.

I'll persevere, but will keep looking at larger paddles.

I presume Gizzie is short for Gisborne.
Nice place, but unfortunately I never got a chance to surf there.
NZ is a somewhat unrealised quantity for surf. Fortunately for you all over there, most Aussies head for Indo. And make bigger crowds than at home ('')

Regards,
Jim.

OK, more to add.
Took my far superior half SUPping today.
As usual she outshone me.
She's a natural! :D

Hmm. Unfortunately the videos aren't loading so a couple of snaps will have to do.

Jim, as you state it is much harder to SUP surf than longboard surf. Your board looks like a good surf SUP, but until you become skilled I think you will find the learning curve a bit steep on that board. That is not to say that it isn't a good board, most first timers graduate to surf SUP's after becoming adept at what they are doing. Particularly at our age. As Gizzie says it is always hard to paddle against the wind.
I would suggest it is the board rather than the paddle that is slowing your paddle speed. Try spending a good amount of time just paddling to get your technique and paddle skills improved. Maybe ask some more experienced paddlers in your area for some tips.
I am sure yiou will master it, it just takes a bit of time. Good luck.

Thanks ET.

I noticed that I was a bit faster today, and a little more stable/confident.

Looking at the photo, I wonder if I need to move forward a little? The tail looks a little submerged to me.

Christ, I startled a lot of bream and flathead! Wish I was stable enough to throw a line in!

There's a small estuary break behind us in the shots. Might be a good place to progress to wave riding. Gets big in nor'east swells :)

Any advice on how to post video. The computer (a recent Mac powerbook running Leopard) just seemed to bog down without making any progress in the upload

The board looks nice....did visit the JP site the other day & gathered the fusion is one of their more surf orientated boards & 191 litres before my pc & the JP site had a disagreement. Maybe a bit further forward......practise practise practise on flat water & all else will come naturally

as Gizzie said! try aim your feet to be each side of handle as then weight centered , then its only a step forward or back to get either on wave (if small waves) or back off wave when you are in over your head! love big waves
Just don't forget your Leggie.

Nice board too. looks similar to my WP.
