I'm still in the process of playing around with the Ke Nalus and am finding them great to paddle with. Recently I did the paddle clinic with Pete dorries and he said everyone is beginning to use shorter paddles. I'd be interested to hear what overall length paddles you guys are using for racing.

My sup surf paddle is head high and my race paddle is 6.5 inches above my head..

Hi NNSUP,

We are using our race paddles at about 2"-3" inches above head height. My surf paddle is about head height. The short length is great for racing as it forces you into a better posture for racing, but the dwnside is that it becomes too short to be an effective cruising paddle.

To cut down your paddle to race length, you really need another recreational paddle or be prepared to make some serious changes to your stroke when paddling slow.

I have an ergo-T extendable handle and have gently scored position marks into it with a nail file, so I can adjust the length - shorter for race, longer for cruise.

Thanks guys. It looks like a lot of variation out there. I'm doing the Narrabeen downwinder today so will have a look at what the other guys are using length wise.

Mind you , I think Kai Lenny will find himself in a sidewinder out there today. It's looking like the wind will on shore the whole race.

I find the Wiki a little small for me personally, I like the Maliko, and am scared of the Molokai

DM

Hey don't be intimidated by the Molokai ...I had the pleasure of a demo Molokai/xTuf combo over the weekend and once I relaxed into it I liked it...masses of power in it and using it was actually pretty instructive in a way. I own a Wiki and a Maliko and have a tendency to try to muscle them to overcome sloppy form but the Molokai wouldn't let me, I'm just not strong enough to arm-wrestle it. It forced me to back off and pay close attention to timing, good clean catch and recovery, and drive from the core and hips to get it working well for me, once it did it felt bloody good. Definitely not rapid-fire cadence like the Wiki but a reasonably stroke rate was achievable. I liked the springy shove from the xTuf shaft and it's got a nice swing weight on the recovery...would love to try the big blade + springy shaft on a decent downwinder. The demo may have been an inch or so long for me and after a couple of reasonably vigorous runs with it I was sort of expecting my dodgy reco'd shoulder to be screaming today, the old bones and gristle are a bit tired but there's no pain at all. Two thumbs up I reckon, don't overlook the Molokai, especially if you're a bigger unit.

The Molokai is incredibly powerful....particularly with the 100 flex Elite shaft.
I couldn't think of a better paddle for sprint racing

When you guys measure the paddle, e.g 2-3 inches above head, is that the end of the shaft or the blade and shaft. Also will shortening your paddle reduce shoulder pain after long intense sessions?

IMO the longer your shaft the better ;) -> More reach = less strokes.

However there is always the point where you will go too long and cause potential long term shoulder injuries.

I measure the blade and shaft. When I posted the question on length the variation of responses was quite wide. I spoke to Jacko and Angie as well as Pete Dorries and came to the conclusion that 8 inches above the head suited me on my race board.

I then played around with different Ke Nalu shafts and blades and for me either the 90 or 100 combined with the Maliko paddle seems to be the go. If you like a higher cadence the wiki would be better.

The 100 shaft is more direct and I find this shaft great for racing, but prefer the slightly softer 90 for everyday use. The most impressive thing with these paddles is their weight, combined with their flexibility makes them an unbeatable paddle.

I know 2 guys that purchased Ke Nalu paddles after trying mine have improved their PBs at their local time trial course.

Took delivery of my Wiki/60 shaft/Xtend T handle the other week and loving it !!
Been surfing hard since and the tennis elbow is almost non existant unless I'm in heavy wind and the form goes out the window.

Heaps of power from the shaft and sling shots you into the wave. Also the smaller blade is a lot easier to use in any wind which seams to be most of the time....
Highly rated!!

Hi all,
I'm looking to invest in a great paddle.
I need a small paddle for DW and, yes, I've got dodge shoulders too.
I've got a DC17.
It would be awesome if I could DEMO one of the Wiki paddles.
Anyone know where I can do this?

I'm in Brisbane.

Cheers!

Good luck.

Depending on your size and strength there might be a better solution from the Ke Nalu range than the Wiki....even with dodgy shoulders.
The Wiki is great if you are not a really big bloke (I'm assuming 'pyeman' is a bloke) and you paddle with a high cadence.
Alternatively the Maliko with an xTuf shaft might be the go. The xTuf shaft softens everything up so there is not as much strain on your shoulders and provides a nice little twang at the end of each stroke to help you get onto runners.
Briskite does sell Ke Nalu but not sure if demo's are available....drop in and see them.
Otherwise as ET said.....check the website for demo centres.

Thursday is no good for me this week. I am up the sunny coast often though. Maybe another time. I'll get back onto you if I haven't yet demoed elsewhere, cool?

Hi pyeman

Let us know what you think if you do demo the KeNalus. I am about your size and will get a KeNalu later this year. Just curious as to weather you find the Wiki the right size blade or if you would consider Maliko too much blade.

Cheers
