This turn from Pancho was considered the maneuver of the year by the ASP.
The event was Rip Curl Pro Search that took place at Barra de la Cruz (AKA La Jolla).
The year was 2006.

Whatever the views of Keahi's above the wave or face surfing his tube riding is amazing on a sup. Ballsy too! Surely at this point in time he is cosiderd one of the best Suppers on the planet if you choose to quantify his skill and accomplishments. Not to mention kite and other craft. To any knockers please put a vid up of yourself surfing similar waves, or anything so we can critique.
Personally, some surfers are more talented than others, styles vary, craft choices a plenty blah blah blah.
I just love the art of fun playing on a fresh canvas and how others choose to do it is no better or worse, just different. And the more different crafts and styles the better.
Fun = smiles

Have a look at the thread below, especially the image of Tom Carroll at the bottom, to get an idea of where I think sup surfing should be going. They seem to bury the rail pretty well.

Edit - Keahi rips just discussing style do not get too precious guys

You have to see Keahi 'in the flesh' to appreciate his surfing. It is the way he surfs the entire wave (positioning, speed and style) that is impressive. Super ballsy as well especially with those ankle snapping airs.

I agree Hilly that if he added the Dogman hack to his surfing it would make it even more impressive. He is definitely improving that side of things though. It was funny to see the old Northwest trip link you put up.

Re those Hull Rippers, I reckon the vids of em tell the real story as they wash off speed and look horrible to me, the design hoax of 2011 for mine. Are they still being made?

Hey I agree that keahi top turn isn't the best meanest hack out there , even looks like he's got no fins in the board weather this is a pj design style or a something keahi likes I.e small fins? But the kid rips it is easily the best sup surfing video footage I've seen and let's face it the kids got the full bag of tricks and is not afraid to use them all ,also how sick we're those barrels!,,!!!!!
Also let's face it every freak of nature surfer isn't the compete package in every aspect of his or hers surfing ,if they were there name would be Kelly slater !!
Keep posting these videos Keahi ripping!

And yeah Goaty gotta agree about the hull flipper

Totally agree. He has everything else. Best barrel rider on a sup I have seen.

Tried a heap of hull rippers and they were average. Probably killed off PSH as the website has disappeared. It was telling to see Noah stuck with rippers throughout that stage.

IMO one of the best vids to date - Keahi has one of the most natural, uncomplicated, almost effortless styles out there. And that's perhaps the only thing I'd critique - he makes it look too easy, too effortless. I sometimes miss the aggression of a Zane Schweitzer in his surfing, he almost looks too laidback, he has all the skill, timing and grace - I feel he just needs to add a little more juice and "I want to get you attitude" to some of his turns. Especially his bottom-turn is just too smooth and perfect, but it lacks a bit of anger...

I've kitet and surfed that wave and although it is by no means a heavy wave, in heavy wave terms, it packs a fair punch when it gets to the size in the video. I stuffed up myself on that reef on a much smaller day....in lieu of that I find his barrel riding amazing...

Keahi surfs that wave incredibly well and is easily in the top 3 of my favorite SUP and kitesurfers, now just go have a bad a day and take it out on that wave!

I dont think he needs to surf with anger at all , if he wants to win comps posssibly. He has a very natural realaxed style of surfing and i think this is better than trying to tear the wave apart. He surfs with sole and i for one love it!Had the peasure of watching him one day at Currumbin pulling into tubes casuall as you like , this is surfing not chucking bucketts.

Been lurking here form many years and seen many come and go. Never really felt compelled to respond to anything before until I read this thread but this needs to be said.
I am a long time surfer (decades and still only average) but only been SUPing for 4 years. I don't tell people I regularly swap my short board for my SUP when conditions are right because I find most of the surfing performed on SUPs just down right embarrassing. They can be so much fun in fuller fat waves but present a real challenge when it comes to hollow wave based performance surfing with STYLE and there is very few who can do this including those on the tour. When I look for some SUP footage to show my Kelly loving teenage surfrat children there has only been a few that they don't laugh at. The reason is that many riders are getting the job done but look kooky and stiff and I would much prefer to see a shortboard (prone) on the waves. Some of those pictures posted by Hilly are exactly the sort of SUPing we should be evolving away from and yes sadly Tom Carroll is one of the embarrassing one's. Zane is amazing but boy he's surfing looks looks terrible. The whole internet is at your disposal so lets see someone post a video even half as impressive as Keahi's effort as those stills are rubbish.

In my opinion Keahi is setting the global standard for what SUP surfing can be all about. The test is when you see a SUP surfer on an amazing wave think to yourself would a short boarder have done it more justice. Keahi's videos have always passed the test.
Keahi, Dogman, Casso, Luke Egan, Leco keep up the amazing work. To the rest of you please stick to the fat fuller waves like myself and have fun.
SUP's are for fun and we should all have fun regardless of your standard but if we are going to dream about where we could be then this video is the standard.

Wow that feels better. Been storing that up for a while.

www.mensjournal.com/ old I know

Plus their Nias one
Anything Leco is in
Dogmans etc etc

I think you missed the whole point. I was commenting on one small aspect of his surfing. As Goatman said - something like - Add a power hack like Dogmans and Keahi is the ultimate sup surfer. Hate on bro

Edit forgot Kyron his are sick as well

I hadn't seen the second clip of the Vaz brothers before and while I liked there style it is hardly ground breaking and it is performed in very SUP suitable waves. While I love to watch the Hughes brothers myself, again there maneuvers are all performed on those lovely fat low speed waves that I also love to ride my SUP in. It's the standard of SUPing we have been watching for at least 3 years now and is no different to Keahi's old footage. Very enjoyable to watch and learn from just to see what is possible.

Kia is an absolute hellman as I think everyone would agree but its interesting how Keahi's latest couple of videos really date that footage you posted.
Kia surfs a lot better than that clip shows and it would be nice to see him on some different equipment.

Where was the big rail buried hacks on big hollow fast inside out waves of consequence? (My words of course)

No hate intended here so sorry to offend you Hilly.

I posted because in a thread where people were going wow the critique offered by some was just sad.

These last couple of clips of Keahi's were to me just mind-blowing, poise, positioning, style and amazing speed. Very Parko if I were to give a short board equivalent.

Enjoy your time.

some very good points by all in this thread.....

ive had a chance to surf a bit with the grommet over the last few years...

and ive seen the grommet lifting into another gear every time he hits the water.....

he is by far the most amazing sup shredder in the water

and a pretty dam good "tim-tam disposal unit" out of the water

from what ive seen over those years

....... "Hilly is totally right".... the grom doesnt really power gouge the shizzzzzz outta his turns

but what he does do .......

is flow thru each turn

in his own very unique way "above and below the lip" and over dry sucking coral

i just got back from surfing with him in fiji

and mate in the big stuff he was by far "the stand out" hands down

his positioning on every wave was "CRITICAL" and fearless

and i owe the little guy bigtime!!!!!!!! after he towed my busted and broken down body from the impact zone of the inside section of cloudbreak back to the safety of our boat via his kite....... not my best moment

the grom has some serious gonads charging big cloudbreak on his kite, he got some meaty barrels.....and lots of them

I'd give my inch to have half of that left testie. The fact is Leco wins more comps because he buries the rail more than Keahi, who IMHO is a much more progressive surfer (I love watching Leco BTW). When someone asks for input they're going to get it on a forum. Keahi for whatever reason is not beating Leco yet performs manouvers that you just don't see Leco do anywhere near as much. I think it might be like when airs were first introduced in comps no one is sure how to score Keahi. Look at it know in SBing one huge Alley oop can win a heat. Add a Rodeo Clown and barrel and you've iced it. Perhaps the parmeters of SUP surfing and its scoring are in transition? Can anyone seriously say they've seen better barrel riding? What does every, and I mean every surfer say is their favourite part of surfing???? Yep Keahi's SUP surfing Parko.......his goal therefore should be SUP surfing's KS otherwise he isn't going anywhere. IMHO he is now closer to being the KS of SUP surfing as he does the most radical manouver possible instinctually in the pocket. Take him to big Bells and see what he does, I betcha he carves!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. Why is it a test to be as good as a short boarder, or as Anyboard put it, "do it as much justice as..."

What a load of crap!!! Surfing on any type of craft, SUP, Shortboard, Mal, Lid, whatever, is that individuals expression or style. There is no better or worse, or wrong or right. Its what you enjoy riding & how you like to ride it. Unless of course you are in a contest that has clear, predetermined judging criteria.

So do what you like out there..... Just don't drop in or snake

I had a bottle of red bet with AA that they wouldn't last a year.
I was at the shop when he opened the first stock board from the consignment.
That hull style of surfing board needs power to get going, it is designed to handle power.

Yes, and I must say I like it a lot when the vids show the entire ride to appreciate the flow of it.

Please, Keahi, continue posting your vids. As with music, each of us have a favorite genre, but life would be boring if we only listened to it, and most of us can enjoy different talents with different style. My personal goal is power surfing, but I really enjoy your vids, especially for the power you are able to generate from your bottoms via timing and positioning...
