Checkout this extra fin by Kelly Slater to give more drive to quad boards and to take the squirrel effect away from quads.

I know that it is not new as it is already being used on wakeboards etc

Might be what the quad riders have been looking for.

Thats for posting. I was thinking of exactly one of those for a quad of mine, but I was too scared to hack into a fin myself. But I will give it a go. I had the Bonzer fin template in mind... but as a centre.

the squirrel non centred thing is what puts me off quads. even tried the sweetie pie gerry after it was recommended as a quad.

5 fins is two much. a tiny fin i felt might just be enough to centre the board.

the bonzer looks the goods, but i'm wondering if the drag factor starts coming into play

and i think you have to a good surfer to make this type of set up work. waste of time if dish panning and wiggling your ass a bit is your go imo

Any more and it would look like a giant tooth brush. But seriously it's been done before,it's just that Kelly's doing it so the media have jumped on their little band wagon and started beating on their little drums no big deal.Anyway Derick Hind will tell you that there's way to much drag with all those things in the back of your board not to mention the extra weight.

In he latest Pacific Longboarder is a good story about Michael Cundith and apparently he is putting 5 fins on his retro stubbie models. Unfortunately no photos or details of the set up but good shots of the stubbie in action.

Also thought the story by Midget about the Northern Beaches in the 60s and 70s was excellent, but might just be showing my age.

They don't seem to have made a fin that fits a futures finbox

I took an old centre fin this morning and cut it down and sanded it. It changed the ride so much, I was quite surprised. Rode the same down the line , but after a cutback I didn't spin out in the whitewash and didn't loose all my speed to charge back down the line.

Make your own!!

I remember Glenn Winton using 5 fin boards in the eighties, absolute power and precision.

Isn't it interesting that as much as stuff changes it all remains the same. Multi fin boards from the 80s are back, bring back the fluro wetsuit.

Mattison and Slater might be on to someting. I bodgied up my own nubster from an old fibreflex fin and went out in 2-3ft mushburgers and it did seem to give the quad a little more squirt and settle down the squirrels a bit when I came off the foam. Nothing dramatic, but might be a subtle improvement. Probably would have been better if I didn't hack off quite so much on the first go

Didn't notice any extra drag but waves were pretty slow.

Swell coming so more crash test dummy work planned for tomorrow

My 5th fin will be finished tomorrow.

Today was all about going to The MCG to watch my mighty Cats slowly crush Co11ingwood. '11 was the season that The Cats dined out all year on Pies! ;)

It all works. 5 fins, 6 fins, 7 fins, 2 small fins, no fins... Its just a matter of making adjustments to your style to get the best out of your setup.

Here is a pic of my "Zoolander" which has only 2 small fins - the outside rail fin (its for right hand points) is similar to that bonzer styled fin.

Here is a pic of my optional 7 fin board. This pic is set up as a 6 fin with very small fins. These DVS fins are actually the same as what I am using in the previous pic (but on the inside rail). This 6 fin configuration had just been used in solid 6 foot JBay last year and yes it did work.

My new Quad is working insane so far. I'm not changing a thing and I honestly don't really understand some of the comments above. I know and still communicate regularly with the guy who repopularised the design. His drive for the quad was to be able to surf a heavy hollow wave better and with more control.

Comments above are squirrelly, non centered etc. They don't fit with the intention of the design and what it adds to a surfboard when positioned and set up correctly.

If Kelly needed to add drive via greater fin area to his shorter boards which are non coincidentally shorter, wider and flatter than his regular boards then how do we expect to feel secure using the same fins as Kelly on a board 1 1/2 times as wide??

Quads get a bad wrap from people, most of it is because they are using the wrong fins.

i don't really like quads with the right or wrong fin/position setup, but i would be keen to give the bonzer centre/quad a go

When you think you've seen it all along comes these...

One of them as a centre on a 5 fin sup could be illuminating.
