Has anyone tried one of these, or are they just a gimmick?
I have a C4 sub vector 9'6 that doesn't seem to go fast enough on the wave. Would the knubster get me to where I want to make a bottom turn without effecting the turning ability of the board?
I am running the the FCS Q7 XC (quad) fins that came with the board. Would some different fins make much of a difference? Any recommendations?
Thanks
Pete.
I've been using a nubster for a few years now and find they work for me, I run a smaller quad set and find the nubster gives me that bit of drive of the bottom that you get with a thruster but don't usually get with quads and doesn't affecting the turnability.
5 fins in my opinion can really help a lot wide tailed boards. With the appropriate size of trailer fin for the width of the tail, you can get both speed of the quad and the control of the thruster. I found out that it helps a lot the board to be confortable in its upper wave range, but you may want to remove it in small waves if you want more "pumpability". The board will have a more positive feel out of turns, with more drive and forward projection.
I'd advise to have one that you would put on when switching to your bigger wave leash, if your board tail isn't narrow.
Here is a trailer fin (as used usually for Twinfins + trailer config) on my slow-waves 6'8" (Fins are C-Drives in sizes L, G, and QM. The center fin allowed me to reduce the size of the front fins from XL)
However, on my 6'8" for more powerful waves, which has a moderate tail width, a nubster is better (actually an old plastic FCS fin reshaped to the size of a nubster)
And this is the setup I will try next time on my "standard" 7'11" with moderate tail width: smaller (GL sidebites) rear quads, with a nubster
I use a nubster on my 9'0 & 9'10 Hokuas & have found them to add just the right amount of control while still allowing you to release & slide the tail quite easily.
