Shortboard riding holding a paddle like baggage doesn't do anything for me. In fact it looks bloody lame.
I much more enjoyed the video of him posted a few months back where they are on a catamaran maybe in Costa Rica. Here he is on a bigger board and really shows talent using his paddle.
I like it, yes its a small board...but he's fairly lightweight. He is getting run through fat sections pretty easy...try that on a short board? So its definitely not a short board with a paddle.. each to their own. Style wise its cool, nice railey turns.
Yes - i like the short board style,
and that is because i want to try to emulate my short board riding on a sup.
why not just do it on a sufboard ? - because i am bored with surfing, surfing average waves with to many crew,
as least supping makes average waves fun, as you quite often paddle into your own zone to get away from the crowd.
But some crew don't want to snap it in the pocket, they want to emulate long board riding on a sup , which is cool to - as this style done well looks great.
whatever style you are into.....
but i know what they are going to score higher in a supping suf comp ......

Each to their own , if you like short sups great im not having a crack at those that do. I just think it looks awkward , looks akward to paddle too , instead of him paddling past prone guys i rekon they would paddle past him
Anyways whatever floats your boat P.S shortest ive tried is 9 and dont have the urge or ability to go smaller
I have jumped on one of those extra low volume SUPs shaped for someone competitive 15 kg lighter than me. So what if I could take off prone then bounce down the line belting the lip on my back hand while faining using the paddle?
Guess though I can still push it on a shortboard and like to keep my SUPing sesperate and different. Again, you can blame all those years I spent digging in the paddle on big Canadian canoes. This obviously helped me learn the difference between prone surfing and a paddle sport?
If I could do half the things he can on a SUP I'd be stoked. But what's most impressive is if that board is smaller, then hanging five just proves his talent.
In the late 70s hanging 5 was still a competitive manouver in pro surfing and the average size board was down to a bit over 6' so its not as if you need a big board to noseride........I love watching this guy surf.He is a real natural and a great learning aid too if you care to read the fine print.

Enjoyed the vid but it looked pretty 2012 to me,
depends weather your are old school or new school,
but like it or not this is where the best in the world are taking sup wave riding.
I actually picked up some paddle moves off the Lecco catamaran/ Costa Rica vid. The classic is where he uses the paddle to stall, lifting the nose, then uses the paddle to blast forward with twice the acceleration. It's moves like this that make SUP look original, differentiating it from lame shortboarding.
