First ever post - been reading for a few months and for me a great forum to learn from. With all the rain around Sydney the rivers are extremely murky. Recently got a Coreban Edge and trying to improve distance and technique. Set off from Yowie Bay, down Lilli Pilli channel and headed east along mad mile. About opposite Little Turriel Bay a 6 foot plus shark (likely bull) cut the water in front of me, and cruised past to starboard. I stopped for a moment, raised the paddle ready for a defensive sweep but obviously he wasnt interested. I then turned around trying not to fall off (not used to kick turns on this board yet) and high tailed it back. No one was around and I am glad there was no boat wash to potentially capsize me. I had thoughts of him stalking me, but didnt see him again. There had been a seal all the way up in the middle of Yowie Bay for the few days prior to the big wet, and in all the murk I wonder if he is safe. Surfed around Cronulla for years and swim in Port Hacking over summer and only ever seen tiny shark when kayaking up near Audley. This confirms to me however there are moderate size noahs in the Hacking. So in the dirty water take care guys - especially if falling off in Baysurf.
Welcome to the breeze.. Bummer about the brown water..
btw.. I reckon sharks are more afraid of us than we are of them.. [except the realy big ons]..
We are experiancing the clearest water here that I've seen in years..
I love seeing the bottom in places you normally can't.
DJ
DJ, got out on the bay both yesterday and today from bonbeach up to mordialloc and back...agree with the clarity lately. Great to see the bay in such good condition.
Cheers
Didn't see any sharks...only this little guy
Yep the bulls are around all right and they love the murky water.
Have to agree with DJ that they are probably more wary of us than we of them. I often see bull sharks in the river and canals around Noosa and people swim there all the time, hasn't been a bite yet.
I reckon that if there is plenty of feed around they won't be interested in us. Enjoy your paddling in the HackingRiver it is a lovely spot.
Cheers
ET.
We had a club social paddle up the Hacking River to Audley last Sunday morning. We had the place to ourselves. Audley weir was a great sight. Pics are posted in the club talk forum. Ahhh..the serenity.
We've had dolphins, seals, whales, baby sharks and eagles on our paddles around cronulla & Sydney Harbour, but the most harressment we've had came from fairy penguins! Needle beaks and no fear of humans. They like the taste of small toes!
Saw a couple sharks having a feeding fenzy at Freshie where the storm water drain runoff runs out near the swimming pool, there were about 4 of them around 1.5 m long, they must have found a tasty treat washed out with the storm water.
