Hi all,
Just wanted to post some pic's of my new board that Jacko from Roar ordered for me. It is a Surftech Gerry Lopez 8'5". I don't think these were meant to come into the country till next year but I heard word that Surftech Oz had two in on there last container so here we are. I first saw it about 6 weeks ago now at the Quiksilver boardriders store in Waikiki and the price was right but had conflicting comments from Jetstar staff on whether or not I would get a Sup home so

I didn't risk it thinking it wouldn't be a drama getting one in Oz anyway (For a few extra $). Didn't realise that the Oz market and the US market get different boards. Anyway I lucked out with this. Can't surf today because of a foot injury and will be working for the next 6 days so I hope the swell that is picking up will stick around a while longer. Will let you guys know how she goes once in the water. Cheers Jacko and Ang and I'll see you guys next week re the 10'6".

PS. Just a note how useful these forums are. I had trouble fitting the Gerry quads in but since reading the forum, new that others had the same trouble and that a little sanding was all that was needed. Sweet

Did you have to cut the tail off to get it in the container?

Hey Milko, thanks for that. I didn't even know that was what it was called.
DJ it is 28 1/2" wide and 4" thick. I am a little (being generous) over 80kg but reducing since starting to ride to work thank god. been riding a 9'3" ripper for about a year and a half and have tried an 8"6" with similar dimensions with pretty good success. I don't expect to have the same comfort level as my 9'3" but I look forward to the challenge. Can't wait to try the quad either. Thanks for the comments all.

These boards surf insane and do feel heaps different to normal Tufflite boards. Got demos of both the 8'5 and the 8'10 Lopez(Tufflite), and both surf great but Ultraflex 8'5 definitely feels more like a 'real surfboard'. The Lopez Ultraflex also comes in a 9'4 that is a fantastic looking board. Shipping company only dinged up the 8'5 in transit though, so the 9'4 didn't get turned into a demo like the 8'5 as it came through unscathed.

Haven't ridden the 8'5 with the normal Lopez quads as they can make a board pretty stiff (good for stability though) and the board was screaming for three fins because of the tail, so I have been using the new JM fins which work really well in it, not too skatey, and heaps of drive.

Have to admit though that the 8'5 has spent most of this week back on the rack in favour of slightly larger and more stable board, to handle the choppy conditions and rips that are on the goldy right now. No matter how well these 'shorter boards' surf, they can be bloody annoying sometimes when conditions are bit more challenging.

Think there were more than 2 of the 8'5's that made it over in the last container though...

hey Tryfan,
They probably told me they only got the two so that I would pull my finger out and order one. Seems to have worked.
Yeah not looking forward to the chop on this one. Gonna pick up the 10'6" Gerry for my wife soon so I'll use that till I get my balance on the little one when it's rough. I was so keen to try my first quad set up but I am glad I have my 5 1/4" Shapers centre fin if it's like you say. Those Jamie fins look great.

Sorry guys,
Still haven't given it a good go. Had the briefest paddles last Monday afternoon before dark. Seems to paddle OK in the glassy water but I really didn't expect that to be a drama. Have to wait and see how it goes in the chop. Unfortunately with a sore foot then 6 full days at work and then the last 4 days with the flu I really am pulling out what's left of my hair. I did get one small right on the way in from my paddle the other day and it really was only about a foot and it was just a few pumps into a floater but it sure did pick up speed quickly. I'll keep you informed.
