Finally finished. Super stable and lots of fun.
Cheers to the guys at Dolphin for doing a such a great job on shaping and glassing my board.
Awesome !!
Can you post some more pics, looking down the board, especially the bottom line, shot from the tail, and nose.
A side on pic too, to get an idea of rocker and thickness, etc.
I went for a paddle with Hilts and Simon from Dolphin the other day on their new 14's. These guys are like kids in a lolly shop with their new boards. The background of the design is based on Molokai winning prone paddleboards and they have cleverly started from what they know works before they experiment.
Is there anything better than hanging out with stoked people? NO, there isn't! I look forward to watching these guys refine over time and move to other (longer!) designs. They love it.
So why weren't you wearing a leggie ???
They will turn, but you have to get right back on the tail, and you will see a ridiculous amount of board in front of you !!
You should also be able to trim it on long walls, by standing just behind the middle, and weight right over on the rail. Then run back for the reo, or the kick-out!
Very nice !
It gets better each time I look at it !!
I'd drop an extra box in, back at the tail, to ride it in really small surf.
Really nice board.
Did you weigh it?
Regarding kicking out of that wave you mentioned, it would have wanted to go straight, as you could well have had at least 1 foot behind the fin. ??? The Naish 14 doesn't really kick out either. You sort of trim it out hard..... Not a kick out !! Just too much board for a kick out. They pick off 1 footers with amazing ease though.
2 potential reasons for the tail to drift... 1 - fin placement. 2 - these big boards get "la-la". Hawaiian term for controlled side slipping. The big boards like to do their own thing for small periods in time ! I find you can let the nose slip around... release the nose, but let it drift/slide down the face, to reduce the drive, to avoid getting too far infront of the pocket.
They are a blast in small surf though.
I completely understand you "blue line", hooking as you gather speed down the line.... they do race down the line once you have them wound up !!
They handle small sucky waves too !!
