Seeing as we are doing a family holiday out to Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges the first thing I tought was to go paddling on Lake Eyre.

I'm not sure if this has been done yet or if it can be done with wind tides, mud etc but hey, may as well have a crack.

Stuart from SupLove has set me up with a nice new SupLove 10'6 Escape and we head off tomorrow.

Any info from anyone who has done it would be great.

Murray has reports that there is the most water in Lake Eyre in the last 30 years.

The half of the story is just making it too the great desert lake..

Then dealing with "desert tides"

I look forward to the stories and photos!!!

Its on the edge, could be once in a lifetime stuff!!!

First night out on the way to Lake Eyre was at Nyngan. Good time to christen the new SupLove Escape and paddle down the aptly named Bogan River to the Annual Bogan Festival

.
Good thing was the board floated my fat butt. :)

Well we made it and the experience was interesting. Luck was certainly on our side.
It was a buzz knowing I was probably the only person on the lake at that time. Being 144km long and 77km wide it's an awesome body of water.

The afternoon we arrived the tide was well and truely out. The prevailing wind had blown all the water about 300m out of the bay. There was water but only ankle deep for as far as we walked. About 400m through mud to just below the knee.

The next morning the wind had swung 180 degrees and blew the water back in. We watched the tide come in about 400m in about 3 hours. Amazing to watch and the water was up to the sand.

By the time I launched it was receding again and I had about 100m of mud to get through first. After paddling around for about 3 hrs it was a 400m walk back to the beach through the mud.

I paddled about 1500m off shore and the water never got any deeper than about 15 inches.

A really amazing place!

Thanks agian to Stuart and Matt from Sup Love for providing with the board so I could have this once in a life time adventure.
