No one in the car park. No one in the water. Glassy smooth. Just along from an old pier that was once one of the busiest piers in the country. Not on this day. 
I just bought some locking straps, and now the board will reside semi-permanently on the roof racks !

Yeah, just leave it on the roof now. Keep a paddle in the car.... If you feel like a paddle, just find water.
Thanks Scotty. I'll review my insurance policies ! But yeah, I figure a pair of bolt cutters, a hack saw, and pliers, would combine well and break the cables. It stops low level drug addicts at least.
But it will remain on the roof! The two places where I park are pretty low profile. So I'm not overly concerned.
Hey Simondo, I know where you guys live down there, might no be the same as parking at a busy city beach, but I wouldn't assume just because the straps are locked that this will deter everyone. In saying that there's certain places up here I wouldn't worry about leaving a board on the roof, but other places i wouldn't consider it at all.

The boards were stolen by someone cutting through locked cable straps!
I like the extra deterrent the locked straps offer - and it will stop anyone just walking off the street and thinking they can get a board for free, but wont stop everyone. Some places will be safer than others so I guess everyone needs to be aware of where they're leaving the car with boards too.

Let's face it, if someone really wants your gear they are going to get it. The straps are a good deterent.
I have them and use them, however I don't leave my gear on there all day either, don't work in the type of job that allows me the flexibility to go for a paddle during the day.
Here's my future option.... (idea)...
Drop a dirty big 1"1/4 inch hole right through the board, and insert a 1" (N.B.) PVC Conduit, and fibreglass the conduit into the board. Then use a fat motorbike cable lock, loop that through the board (through the conduit hole !), and loop around the racks !
(NB is Nominal Bore, or ID / Internal Diameter, for non pipe people . OD is outside diameter).
