No surf today so Gizzie suggested we paddle around 'the island'. (photo not taken today). Ive just started ocean adventures..but not surfing (yet).
So alls well...just a gentle swell here and there. Managed to avoid the hidden rocks and get behind the island and start our return. A seal decided to join us as we paddled in the shelter of the island...how cool is that..then Gizzie looks out to sea and casually said there's a shark...he's always on about sharks and making sure Im closest to whatever might be lurking. So thought he was kidding...my eyesight not too sharp either.lol....but sure enough there was a fin. Gizzie thinks it was a bronze-whaler. He got brave and got close to it as it didnt seem to be going anywhere...but we were in between it and the seal. I just concentrated on staying upright and paddled on back to the beach which wasnt very close at all.... very calmly.
I thought it was a very polite shark....pretended it couldn't see us.
Bronze whalers not considered dangerous in NZ waters unless provoked.
I wanted to paddle closer as it was cruising happily along next to us but didn't want to do any "provoking" lol
Its an old photo...today was like a millpond with a few ripples.
Did you see Cott yesterday? It WAS a millpond and there was still 20+ paddlers out trying to catch the ankle high waves

The island....they've taken a bit of artistic license in this image.......in the real world there's far more rocks lol
