Awesome TT! It would be interesting trying to take off with that much wind blowing up the face!

Looks like not being able to duck dive would make a standup session difficult.

Then again if you caught it uncrowded you wouldn't need to go so deep and maybe stay off the rocks.

Not for me TT.

Unfortunately past that nowadays.

Beautiful looking wave though.

Thanks for the vid.

That first wave was sick and yes that is near perfect for Sup no worries to get back out either just paddle around like a reef break. The way that wave just holds is like Cloud Break in Fiji...Nice post Teatree

Please don't advertise Manu Bay as a SUP destination. It is a legendary NZ wave, and the locals will fairly quickly insert your paddle up your ass if you rock up on a SUP and start taking waves/ endangering the lineup.

If you do decide to SUP it, you better be super respectful!

Probably best if you take your shortboard along for a wave at Manu, then head to the Bar or the beach off Wainui Road for a SUP.

You would have all seen DK's wave at the Raglan Bar by now, but just in case:

Was there in the late 80's such an awesome setup, but not somewhere I would ride a SUP personally - there are some 'intimidating' locals. Bit like rocking up to Honolua Bay on a SUP I would think. Great vid Teatree.

Watch out it will be invaded by sups now I have advertised itPfffft. On a day like that I wouldn,t even be anyware near the take off zone id have my 12 or 14 footer catching the big fat ones way wide , all by myself. Definitely wouldn't want to endanger the touchy KiwisOf course I never will but it don't hurt to fantasise , and that way I don't get a paddle shoved up my arse!!

This wave has been on my dream list since seeing it as a kid in surfer mag, you didn't advertise anything.

But I'd never seen it like this, thanks Tea. I found the vid mesmerizing. Gotta be inspiring.

Paddling up the point out the back on a sup would be almost a downwinder.

yep have to agree...Manu bay is hardly a secret spot...if you "paddle" out there on any craft, you need to be confident in what your doing...and don't kook it. Same with any quality often crowded wave.

I don't believe T was advertising anything, it was a question. Yes looks like a great wave and always has done, will I surf there? probably not. But it will be my choice not yours. I'm so sick of local mentallity, wtf gives people the right to even suggest that if they surf somewhere they will be beat up or in this case have a "paddle inserted in your ass". So much for "family of surfers" or "brothers"
For you Chris a red thumb, not a paddle up the ass.

Good on ya Mick. Just like I wouldn't come and SUP at Bells, Winki, Cathedral or Bird Rock.

You wanna complain about local mentality I think you should start at your own breaks (excluding Bells and Cathedral, I always found those places had mostly good vibes).

I was simply showing you the good place to SUP in Raglan (the bar), I dont see how that can be interpreted as me being an a-hole. Did you see how sick that wave was?????

I never said dont surf it, infact mate, I encouraged you to go ride it on your short board. You'll have way more fun, plus you'll encounter much better vibes.

Im only trying to help

I grew up in Hamilton and spent many a school day out at Raglan. The so called "locals" (many from Hamilton funny enough) were dick heads back then ..seems like it hasn't changed...

The crack up factor was many were pretty average surfers.

If you want to SUP Manu or any of the points go for it I say.. Have fun! The sensitive "locals" might learn something.

Fark me I am getting tired of hearing this localised claptrap.

Don't advertise our wave, keep it a secret, what a load of ****e!

Haven't you looked outside of your narrow little box and noticed how anyone in anypart of the world can go and see anything they want nowadays.
Fark me.

Localism has always existed, it existed at Cronulla Point when I was 15 and it exists now at Noosa when I am 59.

So you are a Farking local. Who gives a Farking toss. I bet you have no wave etiquette at all.

Give me a travelling competent surfer who has surfed all sorts of craft over a narrow minded localised pratt any day.

Go for it, pick your wave, pay your dues and go hard.

That's all I have to say about that.

Funny if you click on the Youtube link for this video and read all the comments , it's all stoke even from the Kiwi's yet here we get a paddle up our arse for thinking of going there. That break looks after itself , the take off point is deep , really deep and the locals have it wired. Anybody that paddles out not knowing what they were doing would soon be washed up on the rocks or pinned inside.

If the video doesn't get bad press for being posted on youtube why should it here ?

Nope. If you think about going out there, think about if you can manage the conditions and the crowd properly. If you can, great.

If its out of your league, maybe dont go out there.

My key point is about respect. Respect for the wave and the people surfing the place (locals or not).

Im not saying this is a secret wave. It was on Endless Summer for F u c k s sake! What Im saying is its not a wave for every SUP rider and his dog. If that reality hurts your feelings.... well sorry, you may need to just go and speak to your counsellor about that one.

I am also not saying I am a local at the place and I am going to beat you up for riding a SUP. What I am saying is I surf the place a bit when I visit Raglan, and I'd be a bit cautious about rocking up with me and 5 mates on our SUPs, and dominating things (henceforth my comment about not advertising it as a SUP destination). Most of you know the rules when it comes to etiquette, so hopefully you will not have a problem.

PS I do a heck of a lot of SUP riding in the surf, I think some of you are having a bit of a cry because you think a shortboarder is telling you off. I ride all sorts of different surfcraft, and know each has its time and place.

Stop thinking I am threatening you, and look past the fact I may have shattered your little fantasy.

Love and Hugs

Chris

What we have here is a case of miss communication caused by lack of emotion in the written word.....I think Chris's first sentence came over as a "**** of you pricks that's my wave", when I think he really meant. "**** dude I wouldn't paddle out there if you not gonna own it...and don't bring any kook mates cause the boys will give you arseholes"

Hey Chris you said , (My key point is about respect. Respect for the wave and the people surfing the place (locals or not)

Practice what you preach. You come on here with an agressive post and then start sooking because someone took you to task on it.

How about if i say to you dont bring your short board to my beach or ill stick my paddle up your ass. What type of reaction will you have?Think about it

Any way it looks like an absolute gem of a spot , and who knows one day i may get to surf it.

Teatree it is a gem of a spot. I aint sooking mate, and I dont like when people twist my words.

Read my original post carefully. I did not threaten you. I warned that the locals might take exception. Did I say I was one of them? No buddy.

Anyhoo, I think Greg got it right. You have misunderstood.

Any further questions or comments, just PM me when you're in NZ and Ill come chat to you face to face, less room for misinterpretation that way. Heck Ill even show you around some spots.

PS Teatree, I show respect every time you post one of your paintings. I have never commented on them. You do what you do, I get no joy from tearing other people down over the internet.

I spent 2 weeks in NZ last year and was lucky enough to score a big swell for the first week , I only sup and I went to raglan on our mission south Manu Bay was maybe 6 foot plus but had so many crew was crazy but whale bay had no one out , It actually looked smaller than it was but after a mission jumping of the rocks trying to get out I got out there and was a little under gunned on my 8;3 @ 90 liters the wind was heavy and the wave was really tricky to get into but I caught maybe 6 waves the got smashed running back up the rocks. Also Once I was out about another 10 crew or so all came out all happy as ever!
But to be honest there are a million less crowed great sup waves in NZ I wouldn't go back to raglan myself and I was so pleasantly surprised how friendly the local crew were over there like the nicest people , but this was in the less popular spots just go hunting!!!! NZ has some of the best sup waves going and its bloody cold so good to be standing up out of that water.
Wish i was back there now!!
