If the was the sunset comp he had a huge gash in his foot from pipe. Hate that as on one foot he still makes me look like a kook.

Kai Lenny, Currently ranked #1 in the Sup world tour. Casually lining up on a nice Sunset wave. At only 17yo, Kai is ripping!

JB

He is in town this week, met him last night, seamed very gracious and a great ambassador for his generation. Apparently he put on a good show at Drummonds point last week, anyone that has ever surfed Drummonds would be in awe of that.

Kai is a natural waterman. He has been brought up by watermen like Robby Naish, Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama. So it's no wonder why this kid is so good. Also riding with legends like this keeps you humble and very professional. We will be the next Super laird or bigger!

Sweet shot AA, the old 9'3" Ripper is a 'ripper' of a board! The rider ain't too shabby either

Yeah it is a killer shot. One of the best I have seen in a long time.
Blows me away that he is still on the production 9'3 molded quad.
Raises the rocker line issue as well. I mean he drops pipe backhand on that board!
Is it a skill thing where he trades rocker for drive to project away from the wave when required? I watched Loco's ride a board with a lot of rocker a few weeks back (6' palmy)and he just got mowed down by the wave - he just couldnt escape it as the rocker just slowed him up. I know Blane has changed the rocker line on all the new boards, but we all know the 9'3 so well and IK is still smashing it on that thing!!

Hey AA,

The 9'3 is a killer board in the right hands no doubt and it suits a certain style of surfing and a certain wave.

IK, Bonga, Slater Trout, Matt Lumley, Jako and others can smash it on just about any board.

I think it comes down to having the break wired in the first place especially with pipe (local knowledge) and the skill ability and confidence that you can make it in the second place.

The board just dictates how you will take it on!

Phill.

The PSH moulded board rocker seems to work better in bigger waves. Small steep waves tend to expose the lack of nose rocker. My Mano is much easier to go top to bottom as it has heaps of nose rocker. Still prefer the PSH on anything with a bit of size about it. My two cents rocker is personal taste.

I reckon as Hilly says, once it's big, the old PSH rockers come into their own. Where I found it more limiting was on smaller hollower stuff or when trying to surf tighter in the pocket. I'd imagine Blanes new smaller models will address this.

My laguna has what could be considered a lot of overall rocker - 7 inches nose and 4 in the tail but is very drivey and never gets mowed down even in double overhead. I reckon it has a lot to do with how the rocker is distributed plus the use of concaves.

I still reckon that for Sup surfing to really progress we will need boards that can turn in tighter arcs but with mucho drive and acceleration. can't wait to see the new models!!
