A big thank-you to all who participated in the Port Phillip Cup on Australia Day 26th of January 2010. Mick, Phil and Rea.
It was actually Rich (Session) that helped out with the safety, I was slogging along in the middle of the race field.
Thanks everyone, especially the Sup Bus for a great day it was awesome to be a part of the Port Phillip cup.
Also thanks Sue for the Paddling tips and to the people who let me try their race boards.
Even though I'm no where near competitive in any of the SUP events I've entered I have always had a ball, the vibes been great and I have come away with some sort of prize each time.
If anyone is hesitant about getting involved in any of these type of SUP events or clubs around Australia because of fitness or skill level, dont be (obviously there are some events for elite paddlers or paddlers who have done the training), the people I have met at these things have all been very cool and very helpful, get amongst it.
I also would like to say that the SUP boys & Rea, put on a great show and we (outlaw) look forward to working with them on other events.
From my OCpaddlers clothing/product side of things i will support any furture event as well.
Plug that i forgott to say on the week-end was we have good stock numbers of our it's evolution to stand SUP tee on-line. (we could not sell at the event)
So please support and go to www.paddlers.com.au.
Thanks
W
Thanks guys for puting on a great event. Looking forward to watching it grow each year. I'm sure that you will get at least 100 people next year in the big race.
Thanks guys, awesome.
Phill Mick and Rea,
You put on an awesome event and the vibe was something else!
I believe the spirit of the day is summed up in this Photo!
Nikita desperately wanted to go in the sprint so we let her and as she was heading out to the buoy she and DJ collided.
DJ helped Nikita back on the board and then they both continued on.
Nikita was so stoked that she out paddled DJ in the sprint.
DJ your a total gentleman and you made one little girls whole year!
Thanks mate
Phill
It was a decent collision too. Nikita was very brave to shrug that one off and get back on the board.
And just to underscore the chivalry, DJ was absolutely in contention in this heat, and even after colliding, he may very well have squeezed into the final, had he kept paddling and left Nikita to take care of herself.
^^^^^
Good on ya DJ - always the gentleman.
Well done Cam in the 3km race - a great effort to beat the Lummers-machine. And with Danny Sheard only coming 4th - it must have been a red-hot field. What boards were these top 5 on?
Great fun event guys, congrats to all who made it happen.
A suggestion to improve the dash for cash would be to do age catagories, particularly with the kids, as they are the future of the sport. A number of kids went in the dash for cash even though they had no chance of a prize.... it would have made their day if they had some reward for their great efforts.
See you next year
Cheers
Dean
The other thing I thought of was to draw the teams for the relay. All the names of competitors go into a hat (boys in 1 hat and girls in the other). Organisers draw out 3 guys and then 1 girl to make up a team. (and maybe 1 junior).
This would eliminate the stacking of teams and make the event possibly more even, more exciting and more social as competitors get to meet their team mates.
Just a suggestion...
Hey Dean,
I was surprised to see all the younger crew front up for the race and would also like to see a category to encourage and cater for them. Will have to have a chat with the organisers of future events,
Casso the top five finishing boards included an Airwave Custom,Starboard Pin and three 12ft Naish Glides,
cheers.
Hey Dean and Camo,
It is fantastic that the younger kids and lots of girls and women are having a red hot go! To see 30 plus women in the womens clinic was fantastic!
SUP is turely a family friendly sport and the SUP Bus day showed how successfully this can be achieved.
With a few simple tweaks to the rules the younger competitors can easily be catered to.
I might add I wouldnt tweak the rules too much with Jarrod coming in 12th over all at 11yr and Kristi 14 3rd in the womens there might be a few of the bigger more mature kids in serious trouble
Phill
Lovin your work with this idea Sue!
