"Wilcards Announced: Beau O?Brien & Jake Jensen ? division Open Men. Please note that Queensland?s allocation, (originally 4 & 8 respectively) now reduces to 2 places available from the Technical Sprint Racing component and 6 places available in the Marathon Racing component via the Immerse Festival."

Could be interesting with only 2 spots left for some of the other guns to fight for!

Is this right??

Two spots for travis, Kelly, Lincoln, Peasy, Dorries???? All amazing bop paddlers. Why don't they increase the numbers further so that those that actually race dont miss out and beau and jake (also amazing paddlers) can also have the chance to represent???

I still don't understand why Surfing Qld are running with the obvious error in the Surfing Australia Handbook and only 4 allocated spots (minus two wild cards) for the men's tech race. The numbers in the Surfing Aus handbook are clearly wrong as they just don't add up. The total allocation for the tech race doesn't equal 118! But if the opens men's 12'6" marathon allocations are also applied to the tech race (ie 34 open men's spots) then it all works.

Surfing NSW managed to correct it in their published allocations (8 opens not 6) so how long will it take Surfing Qld to realise its wrong. I know rules are rules and the rule book is binding (hence them adopting it) but common sense should prevail when there's an error in the rules.
Here's the allocations for every state according to to Surfing Nsw, so go figure???

To only have 2 spots left for 7 of the top 10 at last year Aussies, plus Travis who was out injured last year is just plain ridiculous!!!!

Maybe Qld should get all the extra NSW spots cause there weren't enough competitors at their states to fill their Quota.

Don't worry Peasy and Kelly are now masters (like me) but will they go that road.

I like their strategy, make the QLD titles more hotly contested than the Australian Titles!!! Takes me back to high school where making the school swim team relay was harder than winning the interschool carnival.

Looks like the race up on the Sunny Coast the week before could be the real Australian Titles for 2013. The race organisers would be laughing at every step of the way through this amatuer hour if all is as it appears.

Hate when the forum whinges aboout events when people volunteer their time to run them but these guys are getting paid as part of their job.

We wonder why race participation is dropping what the point of paying $165 and the team has already bacically been picked. Not much motivation for anyone not mentioned in this thread. If we want more people to participate we also need ameteur divisions " anyone how has not placed in top 5 of previous races " we need more competitors " more money for events to keep them going" just having top ten turn up to each race isn't viable for race events!for long term

I'm not sure we really need qualifying for the aussies (for the racing that is).
Seems like you want to maximise rather than minimise participants....esp for the marathon.
For the BOP. Why not have heats and finals like they did for the MS BOP at Collaroy...

What happens in every other sport when competition for state selection in a dominant state leads to talented athletes being robbed of opportunities? The athlete moves to another state. Outside of that option, I can't see how you can rob NSW (or any state for that matter) of allocations just because QLD has 7 of the 10 best paddlers. It wouldn't be nationals if it was all QLDers.

But the notion of doing away with state qualification as Kissa suggests also has merit.

point of interest. options for the older crew.

over 40, over 50 pay SQ membership to get a pathway to the aussie titles and that's it

or do the over 40, over 50 shorter course and pathway stops at the end of the race but no membership required, no need to paddle to wendts and back after the ocean section

what is wrong with giving QLD a couple more spots and making it the same as NSW we know there are stacks of good paddlers in QLD it seems a bit rediculous that at the National titles the best guys wont all be there as a New south welshman i think surfing QLD need to take a good look at this before the QLD titles and adjust the numbers correctly its no big deal having an extra couple of boddies on the start line.
aren,t we trying to get more people involved in SUP not trying to keep them away.

Surfing Australia bases initial state allocation decisions on the number of members from each state. I suspect that this formula is a total of all surfing disciplines and not just SUP members. There appears to be a push from QLD to have allocations altered to reflect someone's arbitrary opinion on who provides the best surfers and racers in the country. Meanwhile, some members from the southern and western states are saying this is all bull**** and each state should get equal allocations - it is a national event after all. Pass the popcorn, this could get interesting.

I'm not pushing for extra allocations at this stage, just for someone to correct the allocations based on the obvious error in the Surfing Australia Rule Book, so that the Men's Open Tech Race allocation for each state is equal to the Men's Open 12'6" Marathon allocation, as was the case last year.

NSW has done this already, offering 8 places for the Open Men's Tech Race, rather than the 6 in the Rule Book, and i'm not sure what the other states (outside QLD) have done?

My suggestion of QLD using the additional allocations from NSW not filling their spots, was purely on the basis that this is what Surfing Australia has done in the past. Give each state the chance to fill their allocation through their respective state titles, then state based wildcards (if there is still places left after the state titles), then remaining places that states can't/don't fill and are offered to all states.

As i've said before, if they want a fair allocation based on state membership numbers, then they need to start counting SUP membership separately to short and longboard membership. I'm sure this will come with time as the sport is still in its infancy and improvements will happen over time as the sport grows.

Arent aussie titles about the people who perform at the highest level within Australia? Not specific states. And as with every comp seeding is based on previous events. look at last years results and you will see that it is not anyones abitrary opinion on which state has the best surfers and racers.

All i would like to see is equal numbers from each state thus allowing the aussies to have the highest pedigree of athletes leading to a great event!

Well said Ryan , this needs to be sorted out before Aussies . We have state of origin in qld and they have over 45 , then state is over 40 division . Best to stick with one age . Over allow for state qualifying for Aussies , so you can guarantee the best are there , lets face it unless you were a young hotshot from WA trying to make the Aussie team , you'd spend your money on a trip to bali instead of coming to qld for the Aussies .

Make it time based.... say all competitors qualify if they are within 10% of the winners time??? then the best get through. if a state only has one person within 10% they only get two spots. that will only work for racing.. heats for bop would be good.

That's cool, we just get our winner to stop 10 metres before the finish and wait for the field to catch up, then everyone qualifies. Easy.
