Maybe we should get a charity event/ race - and raise some money?

Looks like the floods have moved to Gympie now... with more rain due all week... Scary stat - over 70% of QLD is currently under water!!

The scariest stat is that the wettest months of the year are Feb / March and cyclone season has not begun yet.

With the ground being so saturated any coastal low, tropical depression or worst case a cyclone will flood again very quickly and probably worse wherever it hits. I hate being negative but this could go on for a while yet.

SE QLD has been OK so far but when you hear that it could be the worst cyclone year since '74 I start to worry about all of these pop up estates built on low lying reclaimed swamp and mangroves. Makes me feel lucky to live on a hill that used to a be a cattle farm! if my house floods the Gold Coast will be a long way under water.

Forecast at present for cyclones is at least double the average. Good news is that it probably means good waves this year Bad news is flooding, lots more of it.

Yeah lets hope the forecaster are wrong regarding the cyclone season , good to get some swell but what a mess it will create.Im also liking my house on the hill at the moment.

I have to agree with you CMC.. Our above average sea temps means a very active cyclone season. There is a few low pressure systems out in the Coral Sea they are keeping an eye on atm.... My bet is that we will have a very active feb/ march... Hopefully in time for the Quiksilver Pro!

Lets hope that the flood situation doesn't get worse- especially with the wet months still to come!

Let's hope it ends before April.

The footage of that Blue SUV in Toowoomba getting washed down the street was heart wrenching. To know that they do not know if there is people in those cars as it is impossible to get to them makes it devastating.

Toowoomba is 700m above Sea Level, hardly a low lying area. How enough rain and waterflow can accumulate so quickly and be called an 'Inland Tsunami' is just mind blowing.

Ipswich today followed by Brisbane. Good thoughts and prayers to those in its way.

Here are some pics from what they are calling the Inland Tsunami yesterday. Crazy but yet the rain isn't giving up and there is a LOW developing near Fiji!!!
My brother lives in a low lying area near warick and he is ready to go if needed but most of his roads are already under water.

Its shocking and there is no end in sight right now. Have to feel for all those effected. King tides on Wednesday will only make it worse as the water wont have anywhere to go. Not a good day to be on the roads but I had to drive up to Brissie this morning and it was very quiet. Been hearing some worrying warnings on the radio so I am packing up and heading back to the Goldie office straight away.

My daughter works in Brisbane city, the whole of the city is in evacuation mode, the traffic is at a stand still with people making there way home.Train lines heading north and west have been closed.
The Brisbane river has burst its banks, experts say it will be worse than the 74 floods.

My brother lives in a little town just outside of Warick & he has just sent me a pic via his iphone!!

He is completely cut off now from everyone. The pic is taken from his house porch and all you can see is Brown WATER!!

He and his family are ready to get onto their Roof if needed. They didnt even have time to get out of his area! It came up so quik. So all they can do is try and hope it doesn't rise much more.

I just checked the rain radar and there is a massive amount of rain coming for us on the Goldie this arvo! Crazy.

Be safe everyone.

Predictions now have the Brisbane River peaking above the benchmark 1974 floods tomorrow afternoon, with up to 6,500 homes to be inundated. Wivenhoe Dam was built after the 1974 flood to reduce the possibility of another event like 1974 taking place. The dam is now at almost 180% of its full storage capacity, so its unimaginable how bad these floods could have been if the dam wasn't there and all that water was flowing down the river too.

Best wishes to everyone in Brisbane, and the rest of the flood affected areas, and hope you get through this safely.

Just heard a theory from a guy at work and apparently there is a documentary that has been made that is claiming the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year is to blame for all the wild weather across the globe. Due to the oil slick on top of the water the water couldn't evaporate and cool, therefore the water had to move elsewhere forming clouds and storms in areas where they do not normally. Essentially the slick was so big it changed the ocean currents.

on sunday he was out in the coral sea and the water temp way out there was 32 degrees...should be more like 27 ish?

The water temperatures are due to La Nina. The last time La Nina set up in a similar intensity to this year was 1974. BINGO! you can read about it at www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/lnlist/index.shtml

This is why meteorologists as far back as early 2010 were telling us that QLD would have a very wet year and this summer would very active for cyclones.

No oil spill, no global warming, just a natural pattern of weather........

Edit: Definition of La Nina:

La Niña translates from Spanish as "the girl-child". The term "La Niña" has recently become the conventional meteorological label for the opposite of the better known El Niño.

The term La Niña refers to the extensive cooling of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. In Australia (particularly eastern Australia), La Niña events are associated with increased probability of wetter conditions.

Changes to the atmosphere and ocean circulation during La Niña events include:

Cooler than normal ocean temperatures across the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
Increased convection or cloudiness over tropical Australia, Papua New-Guinea, and Indonesia.
Stronger than normal (easterly) trade winds across the Pacific Ocean (but not necessarily in the Australian region).
High (positive) values of the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index).
A La Niña event is sometimes called an anti-ENSO (anti-El Niño-Southern Oscillation) event.

sweet...so when does the opposite one come back...next week would be cool :)

i really found it interesting that a few degrees in water temp can make such a difference

There is interesting history behind La Nina and El Nino. On goes my nerdy hat....
Yes we are suffering from a La Nina that is of similar if not stronger strength then 1974. It causes global problems and has done for the entire recorded history. The discovery of El Nino was made by Gilbert Walker and was enabled partly due to World War 1. Back in Early 1900's the world was suffering from horrible droughts in Africa, Australia and India (claiming over 10 000 000 Indian lives).

At the same time it had massive tornado's in USA and severe flooding in Europe. The English government had high concerns as it had territorial rule in many of these lands and was hoping to discover a way of predicting future events. These events at the time were considered unrelated.

He was sent to India to work on the task. He had the right line of thought off the start and started to collect data form all over the world. The data was so great that it would have taken him decades to work through it.

WW1 broke out and many of the English colonist returned to the motherland to defend King and Country. This suddenly lead to mass unemployment in India as most plantations shut down. Gilbert took advantage of this and made the largest human computer of up to 2000 people simultaneously processing the data. This would never had been possible before the war.

Now the data could be read and he noticed a pattern. Every 5 to 6 years the people of Peru would have unusual lack of fish and also an unusual amount of rain on their inland deserts. The people of Peru said that this always happened about once a decade and always around Christmas of that year. The named the phenomenon 'El Nino'. The words translate to the boy child. They gave it a capital E which meant the Christ Child as it happened only at Christmas time.

Gilbert noted that when Peru had a severe El Nino that the rest of the world also had extreme weather either flood or draught. Through his observations he noted that when ever the El Nino occurred the cool waters would disappear from Peru (which is why their small fish left) and was replaced with warm water (this brought their rain) at the same time in the waters off the tip of Queensland the opposite would happen to the same degree (draught etc). This latter became known as the Southern Oscillation.

We are currently in La Nina where by our northern waters are too warm which is causing the rain. The warmer it gets the more cyclones etc they can predict... Peru at the moment is very dry and they are getting a bumper amount of fish . I am unsure of the cause of the water temp shift across the Pacific, but this is what effects the world weather and also the extremes we get.

Climate change has been thought to increase the length of time that El Nino lasts which is why our draughts have lasted so long. They say we can expect 10 to 15 years of dry wheather followed by a La Nino in the future.

Take nerdy hat off......

It was 22C in PNG yesterday. That is just insanely cold for round here. I can't even recall the temperature dropping that low in the middle of winter.

This weather is just crazy.

It's not just QLD coping it. Northern NSW is also in flood. I used to live on the Clarence River and I know they are flooding with alot of towns isolated.

It's very sad watching it all on live telly.. and to think we still have water restrictions here in Melbourne and I can't even wash my car with a hose.

It's enough to make you want to buy a houseboat.
