OK - first thing. This is not a Harbour Race. For many years it has finished at Manly Wharf so, hence the name but this year it will be finishing at Manly Surf Club. If the wind blows southerly it will start and finish at Manly surf club (we will be able to set a a sheltered circuit course). At this point it is looking like a sweet paddle down the coast with a North wind.
For all the details on the race go to: http://online.oceanseries.com.au/
Note that we have a shortened course for the SUPs (around 9km). The start is at Fishermans Beach - just a little south of Collaroy.
You will need to register at Mona Vale. The aim is to start the race at 2PM. For those who did the last race we will more or less be doing the same thing for this race.
Except for the first 1km paddle to get round Long Reef it is straight downwind with the NE. This is a great course if you are new to the sport and want a relatively easy race to start with. However, at times you will probably be up to 2km offshore so make sure you have a leash and wear a PFD.
Let me know if you have any questions...cheers, Dave
BTW - you need to do 3 races (including the 20 Beaches - 25km ) to be in the hunt for the series pointscore and the major prize draw. There were quite a few first timers at the last race so make sure you do this one if you are planning to do the 20Bs. Odds are looking pretty good.
Pete, start time will be 2PM. Same procedures as for last race. Briefing at Fishermans 1.45 etc. unless we are forced to make last minute changes, for example, a southerly decides to come in
Looking good at the moment though
Hey guys what's the go with getting a lift back from manly ?? This race looks like my cup of tea ....
Can everybody please give Dan a wide berth on Saturday? He will be paddling on my DEEP 14' and we all know he can be a little out of control at times!
My shoulder is up to holding the big lens now, so I'll be there to take a few snaps as you round the point at Long Reef.
Casso very funny mate your deep will be in safe hands at least it might finally hit Max speed!!!
Wow Sam this race just keeps getting better and better how good is that.... On a second note mate do you have any balin or creatures deck grip in stock ?? My New board ready this week!
Cheers Dan
Dan, one of the Newy boys should be able to give you a lift back...after a you have a few beers at the club...gotta be at the presentation to be eligible for the draw prizes.
If anyone needs a lift up from Manly to the start let me know and we will try to sort something out.
Of course this all assumes the wind gods are nice to us and we are paddling with a sweet northerly...
Hey Dan, there are quite a few guys meeting at Manly so should be no probs for those needing a lift. Being a little fella, I can squeeze you in my car . Will confirm time later. Probably 12ish at back of Manly Surf Club.
mate ive put on weight i might hit 70kgs by saturday thats pretty big!
nar this race looks like its gunna be super fun..especialy with the northly cant wait!!!
Good news. Race Director, Dean Gardiner, has agreed to send someone down to Fishermans for SUP registration. They will also have timing chips.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO TO MONA VALE - REGISTRATION WILL BE FROM 1PM AT FISHERMANS.
It would help if you could online entry by "tonight". Otherwise, please bring exact money on Saturday.
If the wind forecast holds, this will be a good race for first timers (once you get around Longy that is...)
Will be an outright SPRINT for the front runners
Wind is looking real good
Please spread the word that SUPs do not need to go to Mona Vale for registration. Registration is at Fishermans 1PM with cut-off at 1.20 (this is to allow Sherene to get back to the start at Mona Vale with timing chip info).
2PM race start.
HI Guys,
Sadly just got off the phone to the Dave and the event has been cancelled for today and after just having done a trial run myself I can see why. Visibility is low and the swell is big nasty.
The race will be re scheduled soon so stayed tuned.
Call me on 0407913394 if you want to know more.
Sam.
Hey Sam thanks for the heads up, supposed to clear up later today too, pity it couldn't have happened sooner !
I guess with the 20 Beaches coming up on December 17th, the rescheduled date will either be the 3rd or 10th?
Edit: Just got this -
The Vajda Manly Wine King of the Harbour has had to be postponed to
another date which will be confirmed in the next 48hrs. We at the Oceanseries
are committed to running safe events and as such do not believe we could do
so today with the conditions at present. We apologise for any inconvenience
and will be in touch soon.
Fair enough - very easy to get caught out getting round Long Reef in these conditions. Anyone planning an unofficial downwinder around the same time, perhaps Mona Vale basin to Fishermans?
There's a few of us gonna do the run down to Manly anyway, leaving Mona vale at 1.00 pm
If we are now all wearing pfd's I really don't think it's life threatening out there today, it's just a sign of the times we live in, all risk must be avoided at all costs. Disappointing !
Guys. Yes, very dissapointing given the weather was forecast to clear up. I am still planning a "training paddle" from Fishermans to Manly at 1.30 if anyone else is keen. Can provide a lift from Manly surf club. Pick up at 1PM. Let me know if you need a lift - 0403 260 200.
Cheers, Dave
We all live for conditions like that.
We all wear PFD's and legropes for a reason.
If you don't feel comfortable in the conditions on the day, you can decide not to go out....
Lets hope its similar for the 20 beaches.
From the Ocean Series website:
The Vajda Manly Wine King of the Harbour will have to be postponed until the new year. Whilst every effort has been put in to running it before the 20 Beaches ocean classic, we were unable to find a suitable date that would not clash with major events and that council would agree to. The final date will be published as soon as we confirm it with the relevant authorities.
In the meantime the Vajda 20 Beaches Ocean Classic will be held on the 17th December, entries are open online and will close at midnight on Thursday 15th December.
