Hi All in Sup Vic Land.
It's time for Rd 5 and hence the last race of the RPS/Starboard "King of the Cerb" series for the 2011/12 season.
In keeping with the RPS mystery format [ due to windy conditions for 3 of the 4 races] the course will be determined on the morning of the race.
Because of the raising of the bar in the overall standard of paddling in Victoria this season, it's been decided to have both a 1 hr and 2 hr race.
The 1 hr race is for relative new-comers and people on flat-bottomed or recreational raceboards.
The 2 hr race is for the intermediate to elite endurance paddler and results for this race will go towards the Victorian Flat Water series.
Both races will be held con-currently around the same course.
Where - Half Moon Bay, Black Rock
Date - Sunday, April 15
Rego - 8.30am
Racing starts at 9.15am Sharp.
Cost - $20 which includes race entry, Bbq and refreshments.
At the conclusion of the race there will be a presentation for the division winners as well as the "Most Improved Paddler" for the season.
There will also be a post-race Bbq upstairs in the HMB SLSC rooms.
Hope to see as many of your there as possible.
Not sure about the two hours racing RPS!.. phew... but its looks like a nice day weatherwise coming up and with a little bit of wind so thats good to be in keeping with the rest of the races but it will be a good way end to the Vic Sup Season.
Here's an idea for future races....
Say for example the race is 10km long around a 1km course = 10 laps.
When the first paddler finishes 10 laps everyone else finishes on whatever lap they are on.....except PT, he has to do 20 laps to make sure he works up a sweat.
Most strong paddlers would do the 10 laps....others may do fewer laps.
If an intermediate paddler achieved 7 laps, next time they could aim for 8 or 9.
I'm sure it is not an inovative idea....but if it is I'll claim it!!
Food for thought??
Dean, that's more or less the format of the RPS races except it's not set at 10 laps but rather at one hour. Everyone stops at one hour regardless of how many laps they've done. But this time it's two hours.
Having just read the race criteria , I'm happy, that I'm a relative newcomer with a recreational raceboard,
For the intermediate/experts, do you cap the board size at 12'6 to make it an equal playing field or do you allow 14'/17' boards?
this morning, the Race, 2 hours, grueling bloody hard paddling, well done to Camo who won the event... he paddled past [ lapping] so fast and effortlessly... lookout Nationals
Hey Warick,
Great event 40+ paddlers on a beautiful day and the kids and the girls keep rocking up, it was well worth the trip up from the coast.
To all who paddled it was a great effort in those windy conditions.
The thing I loved about the vibe was so many individual races within the main race with mates hitting the end of the time saying got you this time, followed by but next year I'll have your number.
Wished we could have stayed on but I sadly had to work
Bit of a shame this ends the series but makes you look forward to next season I guess.
Top effort from RPS and SUP Vic thanks again guys.
Phill and Kristi
Hey Woody,
I know the Juniors at 1hr had little left in the tank, the up wind leg was a pretty full on.
Do you know what the final results of the race were?
Also the results of the SUP Vic Surf Vic Flatwater resuls\ts?
Phill

Great photos Phill.
Thanks for making the trip up. Trust you found the later start time more digestable:
Look out for our winter series which starts next month. ( though not officially winter).
Thanks for posting some great action photos Phil, heh Warwick any results and happy snaps of the winners of the event re Lucky Tom and the new starbie and other winners including the flat water series plus results....
Results from Race 5.
Well, what a long season it's been.
We've finally drawn the 2011/12, RPS/Starboard to a close.
The Rd 5 race was, as usual, windy but at least this time it was hot and sunny.
A slight twist to the last race saw the people with plenty of racing under their belt, fighting it out in a 2 hr race, whilst the 1hr was more a social race.
Even though many paddlers were still away for the school holidays, the last race still attracted 40 competitors, many whom were racing for the very first time. There was also an excellent showing from the junior division as well.
The clockwise course included 3 turns and a downwind leg to the bottom mark [which gave the paddlers a slight reprieve].
Cam Hosking had the bit between his teeth from the very start and was never really headed. Meanwhile, there were some interesting battles within battles. Rupert and Jarrod were only ever separated by no more than 50 meters whilst PT had to be vigilante with an ever-improving “Lightning” and the consistent Hock not far behind him. In the women's division, Jean was looking good on the Starboard 14 and Emma chased her hard all race, despite being on a 12'6”.
The post-race presentation saw the division winners receive beautifully hand-crafted trophies . The overall results were based on the 3 best results from the 5 round series.
For the third year running, the major prize went to the most-improved for the series. This year the Starboard Stand-up went to Tom McQueen. Tom is only 19 and has improved rapidly. He's come from paddling borrowed boards in his first races to gaining consistent top 8 placings.
The presentation also included the winners of the inaugural Victorian Flatwater Series. The trophies were, like the winners, a stand-out. PT went to great lengths to ensure the trophies had an action-hero photo of each recipient embedded in the actual trophy!
A big thanks to Starboard for getting on board for the third year straight and also to the HMB SLSC for the use of their facilities on race days.

Hey Paul!
Can you post full results of the Flat Water series, interested to know where we all ended up in the placings!
Cheers,
Leon.
Nice write up Warwick and some good images too.
Might also be interesting to know how many laps everyone did.....maybe at the 1hr mark and 2hr??
Just so we can all know how comprehensively flogged we were by Cam.
Close up of one of the Trophies wish we could have stayed for the presso but work got in the way
Top effort by all competitors!
