My money's on this guy to win.. ..and he now has a new Kialoa paddle..I might have to drill holes in it..
..I wonder if he'll notice..
Hey.. are you Torquay guys coming up again?... Matt.. Rich? ..(Matt won last year)
DJ
I'm going to do the half marathon. Get dropped at halfmoon bay (Cerebus) and paddle back. My shoulders can't handle that stuff anymore.
Or maybe I paddle out and do some freestyle....NOT?
Either way I'll be there for the sausages. Im' good at that!
I,m there for sure. Last year was a terrific event. Prizes for everyone that competed. Looking forward to it
Dave
Sounds great
We will be there, going to be great to see all our friends from SHQ
It is great that they supporting the SUP community

I was just looking through my pics form last year and found some that I've not posted.
I also wanted to explain a few things about how the day will go.
Remember it's Sunday the 15th this year... I hope we get off racing on time this year before the wind picks up and choppies up the water.
Here I am checking out the course and thinking..'Jeeez.. I can't even see the Cerberus from here'.. .
This is what the Cerberus looks like..It's an old shipwreck.
It's very important that you don't get too close to it.
It's very important to not go on board.
It's also very important that you don't pee on it..no matter how much you're busting.
There's big fines for naughty people who do these bad things.
It's really not that far.. It might be over in about half an hour this year.. ..Maybe.. I've put in for calm conditions but you never know. (after all it is Melbourne)
Matt was the winner last year on the very high tech stock 11'6" Southpoint Kalama..
I think we might see a new shape trophy this year.. I wonder who's name will be on it.
For those who don't know or who weren't there last year the top ten place finishers names went into a box and names got drawn out to win great prizes.
I'll check with the guys at SHQ and see if there are any changes for this year.
This year will be the same so you could finish tenth and still win a new $500 paddle.. I know Kialoa are one of the sponsors along with many other great sponsors.
Last year I was rapt to win a carbon paddle after making my own alloy paddles.. Jeeez.. What a difference a good paddle makes.. I was a happy-chappy.
Here's fireman Dave.. Just keeping an eye on the BBQ just in case there's a fire...btw.. Dave came second last year..Will he win it this year?.. The pressure's on..

I am very interested in participating in this but would need to borrow a board and paddle. Was the wind a factor in last years race?
Is there any handicaps for the length of board you paddle?
Like say 20 minutes per inch time penalty working down from a 12foot board.
Thats actually a really good idea. I rekon about 7 minute per foot would be about right for the length of race. Last year most boards were around 11'6" and I think 46 or 47 minutes was the winning time.
If my shoulders hold out, I rekon on my 9'6" i'd do it in just over an hour. Something for the SHQ boys to think about.
G'day DJ,
been spending some time around the westernport area,as its a good area
to do openwater paddles and some surfing.
Cheers,
Camo.
I think you need to borrow a bigger board for the race..and there should be heaps of demo boards to choose from..
DJ
Then I have no excuses! Why would I do that?
Honestly though, I think I have decided I'm a SUP surfer, not a SUPlete.
I wish I was both but I love the good life tooo much.
It's only a few days away now and I had planed to paddle the course many times as a sort of training but haven't done it once.. Oh well.
I can't decide what paddle to use.. Big.. or ..small.
As much as I love these new small paddles a big paddle does have more power..if you can power it..and keep it going.
40 minutes sounds like a short race compared to some races but it's still a long time to be digging with a big paddle.
What do you guys think?...does size matter?
DJ
Yeah interesting dilemma. A big paddle gives you more power but only if you can deliver it. A smaller paddle is less power but easier to change your cadence thus giving you more options for a race strategy.
It depends on how you want to approach the race. Go out hard and keep a steady pace for the whole course or put on bursts at certain times like the start and the finish. In the end I would go with the paddle you have been training the most with.
DJ it all comes down to your rating , with the smaller paddles just keep the power and intensity at the front of stroke and keep it short don't pull past your foot.If there is big smoking runners a bigger blade would be better.
It takes a bit of practice but the tap tap style rating on the little paddles can really get the board moving but you have to stand up very straight and engage your core on every stroke otherwise you will blow your arms really fast.
By the sounds of things you are too close to race to try something new so for this one stick with ole faithfull.
I think you should change the date !!! i'm going to be away on hol's. All jokes aside I hope you guys get good conditions & have a ball, ill be taking my computer so hope you can advise the results and all the buzz. Any chance of a mystery prize lets say a methane would be good.
This is Chuck Patterson on his way to winning BOP (battle of the paddle) last year.. and the $20,000 prize money..
He used the Shaka Pu'u and told me that the thing that helped him the most was using his surf paddle that's a few inches shorter than what he normally uses.
Interesting... ...I wonder if Chuck will turn up for our race?
DJ
Just heard that the SHQ guys are going to donate the money raised from the event (entry fees etc) to the Bush Fire victims... Good one Mike/Luke/Paul..
I guess it would normally go to the barbie and cold drinks etc.
I will bring an esky full of cold coke and solo for every one to help themselves.
The forcast is looking good.. Let's make this a huge one and the more the merrier I reckon..
Last year we had about 20... I wonder how many we'll get this time?
I was talking with Matt (GSI) this morning and they have some interesting boards coming in the future.. Catch up with him there and get all the goss..
DJ
jst got home from an engagement party. I'm going to be one hung over boy in the morning. Imight end up being a spectator.
