I really enjoy paddling the SIC f18 in Australia this was in 10-12 knots of South Wind with a very tinny ESE of Swell. The f18 just glides on the smallest off swells.

this may come as shock but most race boards are built for speed.

not many at 18' thou and the way things are going with the racing scene in aus and well, just about every country except hawaii, there's not going to be many races for unlimited boards. certainly not the prestige race class unlimited boards used to rule.

like or lump it, that's the way it is.

Sad but true Lacey and it has also seen a lot of the larger 100kg+ riders pull out of the sport in Victoria and I suspect all of the other states.

I have been looking back over the participants lists in previous years and its pretty evident many of the bigger guys simply dont race!

If you look at the costs of getting an F18 to Australia its not insignificant and the local shapers are now less than enthusiastic about producing unlimited boards as there is little or no market.

Looks like unlimited boards are going the way of the Do Do Bird!

Happy to make a stand for unlimited's. Sent my Bullet on Deanno's container heading W.A for the Doctor.
Might still race 14's if the wind doesn't show but if the wind is on then the Bullet will definitely get a run.
Can't wait.
Sam.

Yep I'm a die hard Unlimited fan with rudder. My body weight at 95kg is more suited to length and from what I'm hearing I believe I'm the only bloke in Australia that loves the Big 10”inch Elite QuickBlade Racer.
Kai Lenny will tell you and was quoted saying Unlimited's are faster than 14ft SUP's

I'm not too fazed if Unlimited SUP's never take of in Australia. And not too fazed about racing in Australia I find it expensive to race in Australia. Plus races that are run by SKI or OC1's I've raced in many in the early day. Don't you get looked down upon if your a SUP paddler. Like the 25k Downwind race run in Coffs Harbor by OC1's $150 entry fee NO Prize Money and all you get is a OC1 beach towel what a Big W##k.
I'm happy Paddling Downwind for fun in Australia when the surf is s##t for surfing. I'll wait for Maui to race it's more FUN and the vibe is way better has Big Prize Money and the after Party IS THE BEST EVER. I just leave a Unlimited board in Maui to make it easier to fly in and out.

The one race I find in Australia to be the best race in Australia is the Snapper to Currumbin Creek 9k's Race run by Surfing Queensland I haven't raced in it for like 3 years as I've been in Fiji.

Lacey aren't you getting a 16ft Unlimited SUP made why any SUP between 14ft and 17ft is in No Mans Land.

I've gave a few mates a go on my 17ft Unlimited SUP's just the look on there face tells a story and they are all 14ft Die hard SUP paddlers

I dont think anyone is bagging out unlimited boards but more just the hassel with them.
We all know they are faster and i don't think any one would say they are not, it's really a topic that has been done to death and can go around and round for ever.

Agree Jacko.
When conditions suit the Unlimited Boards, they will go faster than the 14's. It's all down to the extra glide.

nothing beats a good run on a 17'4 bullet. hi speed cruising.

gone off the idea of a 16 er for the moment. the idea of a 16' er was a bit more versatility in wider conditions.

og posts got me thinking about the weight/power thing and the way the sport has headed to suit the light weight power paddlers with 12'6 and 14'- the way the are so narrow etc. imo it's an advantage they have. it's not sour grapes on my part. i'm old and nearly ready for the retirement home

any way the proto type paddler could be this.

a young 50 kg elite gymnast who surfs and is a regular clubbie competitor .

also at school he is a good mid distance runner.

elite gymnast power to weight ratio is just about unmatchable. their usually not tall either

throw in surfing and clubbie skills and get some pro coaching and a program.

also there is his running endurance.

a kid like that maybe could paddle a board 21' wide or less.

imagine a bunch of them running amok

speaking of lenght in boards, we just did a run from bilinga to 4 ave burleigh.

i was on a good 12'6. i chased good paddlers on 14' ers the whole way. wasn't too bad up to the alley, but pass the alley was the hardest because the swells stretched out and i couldn't run as long as the 14'ers. its always amazed me the difference that 1ft and 1/2 makes. i'm absolutely stuffed after that.

shows me again how good the top blokes are on 12'6 s- there's no where to hide.

i still reckon if you are only going to have one board for every thing, make it 14'

cheers

scary part pup is it just basic ring exercises and he's not that good.

i did some adult sessions quite a few years ago when i was rather fit. just hauling yourself up is hard. there's a technique to it. even the strongest can't do it unless shown how to.

warning don't do rings without supervision if you haven't done it. the guy that took those classes was a gymnast until he completely ripped both his shoulders to bits when he got it wrong

Whats the verdict on the 17-18ft'ers in short period wind swell? We can get the 17' Naish to go faster than the 14's in pure flatwater but downwind we're still faster on the 14's. I see the potential for open ocean downwinding for sure, but our main downwinder is pretty much windswell and we just can't get the 17' to go as fast - any experience of this on your side?

we are at the gold coast qld aus. we can get a mixed bag. i had a bullet. in the right conditions it's pure joy. only board i know where you can stand back and paddle and it goes faster- thats the money, other times its a bit of a pain in the ass.

the bullet is a better board than the naish by a fair margin

funny thing is it really hard to pick the right conditions which often change a lot during of our runs.

i would still like to have one again. going to keep my eyes on the breeze for sale section- one day

I went from Bilinga to Nth Burleigh 11ks did two runs there was a lot of East in the swell (very close short period wind swell chop) with a lot of current moving South - you could feel it, first run 55 minutes second run 53 minutes and true I'm as un fit as f##k. I was on the SIC f18 18'6"

Thats really fast by anyones standard - did you do that in 10-12knots of wind with a head current? Normally I'll be happy to get under an hour....with 20knots + wind....and no current.

Yep it was 12 knots max of ESE winds on Saturday with an Northerly current pulling South. the f18 was made for California conditions for winds in the Zero to 15 knots off wind.
Sunday had 30 knot winds but I was working if I could have gone I'd be the 17ft f16.

We had an epic run yesterday kingscliff to tally surf club.
All on 14ft except dylan on a 17'4ft bullet.
Was 23km all up and it was unreal!!
The group u seen mac were
Karla gillbert, myself, alison, molly and the boys were jacko, dylan, travis, beau, dorries, dale, chris supracer, luke french.
The 14ft boards were unreal yesterday.
The section just before cook island was just like maliko on maui!
After a massive week of training and diwnwinders 4 days in a row, im stuffed. Awesome day :)
