I see he is making PU boards instead of epoxy.

A few shapers seem to stay away from epoxy i've found.

Polyurethene which is the traditional foam surfboards are made of (i think thats how you spell it?) is much easier to shape and work than polystyrene (EPS). I think the Luke Egan Magic Carpet boards are the same (POLYU) with one layer of 6 oz on top and bottom. Not sure how long this construction would last...

do ya reckon the constant bashing of the paddle on the rails would cause issues???

Not sure how everyone finds it but I maybe only hit my rail once in a surf session so if most are the same, probally not an issue?

My previous board was a PU and all it does is shatter the glass, doesnt look as bad as chips on the rails.

IMO, PU boards are stronger but a fair bit heavier.

Would be ok if the rails were white, but if the rails on the blank are painted and you get shatters on the rail you will see it.

Used to get lots of white patches on my old PU windsurfers.

Even if you glass em' up nice and light PUs feel dead compared to an epoxy.......and Scotty Macs right it takes a fair bit more skill to shape a polystyrene blank, particularly if it's stringerless. I guess unless you only are taking them off a machine......

I used a dyvinicell stringer for mine basically for the same reason, I didnt need it for strength but it makes it easier to work from a centre point that does not move (like a black line that you keep sanding off.....)

Yeah for the CNC machines. Depending on the cost, I might try one down the track.

There is guy is Geelong that used to do them on his machine for about $50 for a short board blank...you supply the blank and the AKU template he runs it through the router...dunno if he would do a SUP but I can't see why not...let me know if your keen and I will try and find his details

You'll find most of these guys machines aren't set-up to do polystyrene blanks unless they actually have stringers. C'mon handshape em', or am I the only guy left who does that? Machines stifle design progression. I've done 20,000 plus by hand and still don't see a problem with it.....

I am happy to do them by hand Stuey but my personal situation is that I have access to a professional shaping bay that is over an hour drive from my home.

My first board took me 3 or 4 sessions so the travel gave me the shytes after a while. Admittedly I probally will get quicker.

Also that meant the blank had you be hotwired from a foam block which took some time also.
Add this to the time I spend in the water, studying part time, a full time job and two rug rats at home under 3.

I like the idea of the repeatability that a machine would give also.

I can see your point Scotty........but you also put machines in a nutshell !!!!

THEY GIVE REPEATS.........WITH NO QUANTUM LEAPS........

Stuey C,

I think the two - machine & hand shaping - compliment each other, it is just another shaping tool.

be cool till after school

Hey Tux,

Was it Corey Russel (Corey Surfboards) with the shaper?

Hey Scotty the trick for not loosing your centre line with eps stringerless blanks is to mark out the centre line with a texta then tape over the line using 3mm pinline tape.
You can actually markout all your curves, deck and rail lines using tape and hot wite off the first rail band, saves dust.
We had a rat die in the wall cavity of our home office a few weeks ago and it is now clear of the stink , I now know what noisesome means.

Thanks Rod,
The only problem is on my this first board, I rekon i reshaped the deck about 3 times until I was satisfied. The tape would have worked on the bottom ok. I actually disagee with Stuey a little bit because although you do need to make adjustments to improve, I think this could be done on a machine also or by hand after to a machine blank. (theory) Hand shaped every board is different and what if something changes that is not for the better? I am not talking from experience hear so don't be afraid to say I am wrong?
