SUP Vic is having it's 1st Birthday and are looking at running a surf event down at Venus Bay on
the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of May. This is the last event of the season, the first dedicated
SUP surf event in Vic and a great reason to get away for the weekend with the family and cap
off a great season.
Like all the Vic events, fun and participation will be the focus. It will be a Mambo style format,
expression session over a few hours followed by a 6 to 10 man final session. Ideally if conditions
suit it will be surf in the morning followed by a BBQ and then flatwater stuff after lunch.
Presentation will be around 2pm Sunday so people can get home at a reasonable hour.
I will post more details shortly but please reply if you are interested or have any questions.
There will be a basic surf clinic for people new to the surf and some demo boards available.
A mini Mambo.. .. It should be great..
We need to make the most of this beautiful Melbourne Autumn weather before that crappy Melbourne Winter weather kicks in..
DJ
Thats right DJ.
I saw a few guys in the surf this morning and they were keen to come over and be a part of it.
Should be a fun weekend. I really like Venus Bay, it reminds me of Sandy Point but better waves
and shops. Also if the wind and waves are no good there are plenty of protected options for a
free surf at and around Inverloch. So either way we should be guaranteed some good quality waves.
Sounds good Brendan.
My wife doesn't get back from overseas until mid June, so basically I'm free to surf whenever and either date suits. Just wish I had a leave pass from work, too, then supping could be my (almost) sole occupation for the next little while!
Here's a rough schedule of how the weekend will run.......

A BIG thanks to all the supporters of SUP in Victoria and this event, RPS The Board Store, SHQ Boardsports,
The SUP Bus and Strapper Surf.
Would prefer the second weekend but if it goes ahead the first weekend, I'd hope to get down on the Sunday.
Thanks Paul. Thats the info I need. Through the SUP Vic mail out so far some have said
the first weekend and other either. I will wait for others to reply and hopefully we can make
a decision early in the week.
I'm working on some maps at the moment of the location for waves and flatwater stuff.
I'll post them soon, or maybe in the morning.
Below is a map of Venus Bay location compared to Melbourne.
This shows Venus Bay and Inverloch area. Inverloch is probably the best coastal town
in Victoria and only 15 minutes from Venus Bay. It has Anderson Inlet which is great for
all watersports and "The Bar", one of Vic's best/longest left handers on it's day. I've also
marked the Tarwin River where the Flatwater stuff will take place.
This is the Venus Bay township itself. Marked red is where the surfing will take place.
Here's a shot of the beach looking right back towards Inverloch.
Tarwin River. This pontoon is about 2ft under water at high tide and will be a launching pad!
Looking up the Tarwin River that winds its way all the way to Anderson Inlet and Inverloch.
I will post information on booking accom soon.
I'm really looking forward to it. Told my family and they are keen too, we are looking to getting a cabin in the local caravan park. Imagine it - a whole tribe of us in this little peaceful hamlet - we will run amok.
Booked and paid for :) but don't let that go putting anyone off, hahaha. Just gotta make sure the missus doesnt go having the baby before that weekend.
I hope Allan makes it down to test out the NEW 9'8" Starboard he won at the RPS Series. I wouldn't mind a shot myself!
For those that aren't SUP Vic members and are solely relying on this site for info,
the date has been locked in and it will be May 1st & 2nd.
Again, any further questions let me know.
Cheers
Brendan
Been some great conditions along the East Coast of Vic this past week with small swells but good for the open beaches and light offshore winds.
Here's a few pics taken recently not so far from Venus Bay,
see ya's there.
I was lucky enough to get out at Big Left again this afternoon. About head high glass perfection. On the high tide when I fell in, I noticed the water had a bit of a bait taste to it - I then realised it must have been from the dead whale that washed up a couple of weeks back. It kind of spooked me being so far out from shore on my lonesome.
Hopefully the conditions stick around for next week.
Yeah a few crew have been chased out of the water lately both around flinders and one at Winki.
Don't think there's too much to be concerned about though.
Hey Windy, you coming down to our little surf event next weekend? Will be fun!
Conditions are looking sweet for this coming w/e - let's hope for a big turnout.
Any west coast guys planning on coming along?
Yeah conditions are looking great. Light offshore winds, sunny and small swell.
Venus Bay picks up a lot of swell so small open beachies is what we want.
Obviously a long way out still but pretty confident it should come through.
For those planning on attending the SUP Vic Event this weekend the official word is the schedule will run on Saturday as previously posted by Bnaccas in this thread.
The forecast for Saturday is looking promising with northerly offshore winds, fine sunny and a temperature of 22degrees ,so with some of us heading down Friday night we most likely will be on the beach from sunrise for the early session and a warm up before the organised event kicks off.
Sunday the wind looks to be strengthening from the west so we will adjust the schedule during the weekend to suit conditions and post updates here but my tip is Saturday will be the better day for those keen to get some waves,
Cheers,
Camo.
Thanks Cam, so below is how things look like running:
Saturday 1st of May
- 9am to 11am: Surf Expression Session (demo boards available)
- 11:15am: Surf Final Expression Session
- 12:30pm: Free BBQ
- 2:30pm: Flat Water Paddle
- 7pm: Group Dinner and slideshow (Tarwin River Motel)
Sunday 2nd of May
- 8am to 9am: Surf Clinic
- We still hope to run a proper surf session in but location may change
***Due to winds we might move to a more favourable spot, probably Inverloch BAr
I will post an update Saturday afternoon and again Saturday night and Sunday morning
Thanks to SHQ, RPS, Strapper and Naish for your generous donation of prizes!
Hey Brenan.. How's the best way to get there.. Just go down past the Phillip Island turn off and then past Wonthaggi.. or around via Leongatha?
DJ
I go down there a fair bit and I prefer the drive through Leongatha more. I think both routes take roughly the same time.
The SUP Vic contact phone number for this weekends event is 0418537114 if anyone has any further questions and not posted here ,
Camo.
Landed in Venus Bay 7:30 Friday night with the troops, staying in Pandora Ave pretty much behind the shops. Gonna crunch a beer and watch the footy.
"How's the serenity"
I hope you funsters have a nice weekend at Venus Bay, Don't worry about the rest of us at work over the weekend, I'm sure we will be ok.
Good luck and have a few for me.
Cheers Scott
Enjoy the sunrise session guys, I'll be on the road at 6am like many others I suspect. Hope the traffic goes our way.
