I want to get a SUP for my 9yo daughter so she can paddle flat water. She is average weight for her age (45kg i think??). What size board do people suggest i get for her. I want her to have it for at least 2 years so i don't want her to grow out of it too soon.
Thanks for the help.
My daughter is on an 8' x 26" Starboard...
She could use a slightly longer board and maybe up to 28" wide. Any bigger and I think she would struggle.
quite a few kids have been on dad's 9 fter surf sup at a 5 week kids clinic we are in the middle off.
they seem to be perfect for them
Also check out the starboard 7'7 soft top, good quality board for kids and the bonus is you can prone surf it. A lot more size appropriate for kids plus they have hardened up the bottom and out in proper fin system.
Here's another idea for you - Starboard has released an inflatable especially for kids. It's 10'6" x 25" and in a raceboard shape.http://www.star-board-sup.com/2013/products/boards/#astro#10-6-x25-astro-race
Just my opinion but I think kids boards should be skinny, otherwise they will develop bad habits on a wide board as they have to sweep in wide arcs due to the board being much wider than their shoulders.
I understand a couple of local brands and identities are also working on kids specific boards. Lahui Kai is one. The other is yet to announce their plans so I'll leave it to them.
My 7 yr old daughter was having fun on my narrower 10' x 27" Laird Ron House Surftech this arvo. Seen a few of the same in soft top going on the buy & sell every now and then.
Guessing too that the kids would be fine on a lot of those narrower superseded Surftechs or anything similar? Surf tech had a couple of shorter 27' wide
Takayama's that you might be lucky to stumble on.
The problem seems to be that most of the other second hand stuff getting around is getting widder and wider. Anything over 28" could start getting cumbersome for the youngsters?
