I am just wondering if any of the Gold Coast breeze members out there paddle in the canals etc that are in abundance along the coast. I must admit I have never seen anyone SUP or for that instance hardly anyone apart from boaties and aqua bogans (jet skiers) utilise the canals for recreational activities. I understand swimmers etc staying out of the water due to sharks etc but surely would be great for some flat water paddle training. I am interested to know as I am only about 100m from a canal that looks so glassy and inviting every morning and think to myself if I had a big board I would be very tempted...comments?
The Tallebudgera creek canals and into the back of Palm Beach are used regularly for Surf Club training, Outrigger training and SUP also. You also see Kayaks etc. It's a full blown water world.
I paddle paddle around Isle of Capri every now and then about a 40min paddle mostly late arvo during the week , generally not much boat activity.
Good for working on technique , never been buzzed by jetskies , I stay close to the shoreline. There are some nasty currents to deal with in the narrow sections just be careful in those.
The Palm Beach canal off Talle Creek would have to be one of the places to work technique and measuring times. It's a bit over 2 ks long in a dead straight line and is a lot less affected by winds and tides than Currumbin and Talle Creeks.
Hey Dazza, where are you thinking of? I've paddled Currumbin, Talle, Palmy Canals and Lake Ore at Varsity. My fav is Talle cause its right next to work and the marine life is awesome. In the first canal between the 2 bridges is just over 1 km great for interval training. But during the week I"ve resorted closer to home and use Lake Ore like the rowers. There's a 1km straight and two loops you can do, a 4.7km and a 3km. I'll be honest though I crap myself when the water moves in Varsity I'm waiting for a fat hungry Bull Shark.
When I first started I would paddle Tallie creek from the carpark under the M1 hope out and walk under a storm water drain and paddle back in the canal then catch a few waves at the creek mouth, alway's a good workout.
I live on a very large freshwater canal that leads to the Nerang river,my friend and I have paddled to Skill Park and under the M1,no boats or ski's here as you paddle past cows and golf courses.
Been thinking of giving little nerang dam or hinze dam a go , some nice scenery in the upper reaches. Now theres a thought for an event.Hinze flat water classic More to worry about the sharks out of the canals , than those in it on the Goldy
a few of my friends at broadbeach waters.....as good as it looks!
i'm out most mornings for a few k's.
I've been paddling around Buds beach on Sat mornings for the past few weeks but I'm looking for somewhere else that might be fun. I think Currumbin Creek is a magical place and I love it.
What is the Broadwater like ? Is it choppy when paddling to go to Wavebreak Island ?
Hey SR, Wave Break is fun but depending on the tide can be a good work out on either side of the Island. Gets choppy when rounding the rock groynes. When the swell is big out the front of the seaway entrance you can get a 2-3 foot wave breaking in front of the Island as well.
Around 10 years ago I used to meet a mate at least once a week and we would kayak somewhere new on the GC waterways. Each paddle was around 2hrs long and it took us around 2 years to paddle all of the waterways, dams and lakes.
There are a lot of really good options out there and I would encourage everyone who lives here to go and find those spots. We are pretty spoilt over here with so many great options - both in the sea and inland.
I often paddle arround buds beach in surfers paradise and around broadbeach waters. A friend and I did a nite paddle on the main river a few weeks ago. It was awesome! you see some people doing weird stuff.
