Don't see the point of a board that makes you compromise and change how you want to ride.

Yep agree totally with you Hilly.

Been there done that already this year may go back Oct.

Courts was ripping on a JL that convinced me to get a JL really happy with it. Different league to the SB and Naish.

scored a sweet sesh at scabs with Greeny, yesterday eve. it wasn't perfect, quite a lot of crew n backwash, bit of wind and the waves were prob a smidgen to big at first. think the swell was 2.3 on a .8 tide.

but got some short but decent fast rides. amazing how much power and speed these little suckers have got in scarbs + take offs are a joy .

Hey Brooko i would like to see the Kalama Barrelled , if you could do that on that board , it would be impressive.I have the Kalama as well and have taken late drops the only drawback ive found is that getin way back expecially on a sizeable wave the board flaps a bit untill you can get a bit more centered.

I haven't had the Kalama barrelled but had plenty of racy Scarborough faces on the big boy. It's funny how everytime you look at one of the SUP's they look so big but on the water it's not such an issue and indeed often an advantage. Had the 11'6" Naish before this and that was the same.

Hilly,

How do you rate the Jimmy Lewis 10'8" compared to the Starboard 9'8". I am looking for an upgrade to my Naish 11'6". I had a surf on the Starboard 9'8" and thought it was pretty good, but haven't tried the Jimmy Lewis.

Well i should be back in the water in the next 2 weeks and im an absolute sucker for challenges, i will get the big girl in the tube for sure and yes dj it will be stand up, i have been so close already on my backhand but there is so much board to fit in that if you catch a rail or the wave sucks out on you , you have this huge double decker bus chasing you wanting to break every rib in your body ! Yeah theres a solid beach break here that holds big barrels i will be sure to send the big girl in for a few and get some pics !

Another smoking sesison at Scarbs!

1m rising to 1.5 swell this morning - mid tide and a great bank out the front of the surf life saving club. The Offshore dropped off and went into a weak seabreeze at the end of the session.

SOOOO many waves - tons of zipper rights. In fact soem of the most perfect little rights i have seen in quite some time!

Plenty of lefts through the gutter too.

i feel spoiled. This particular bank was smoking over the weekend just gone- a nice rip feeding a beautiful wall- but with 1.5 to 2m of swell there were plenty of stylish short board surfers getting shacked on it. Some really sweet surfing goin on on that bank.

I was picking off the Junky ones on the 11'2 - got a ton of waves on both sat and sunday.

Today some guy was out before me on a Stand up but he was way under done for board size cos he was just falling in all over the place.
its hard to get good advice - Poor bugger. Didnt look like he had any fun at all on what was an epic sup bank.

I reckon small wally waves rule over fat large ones any day !

1 - 1.5m swell scarbs sessions make the 3m plus swell sessions at cott seem pretty boring.

Ive been riding an 11'2'' UB for about 2 months now. I have held back on my view of it for some time to make sure it was real. My impression of it is, I think, the starboard 11'2'' will in time become a legend. The volkswagon beatle was utilitarian, basic and dependable. I think the SB11'2'' will become in folklore eventually like the VW beatle. There always will be faster boards, more manouvreable boards, more popular boards for a time. The 11'2'' is easy to ride, great on flat water, immense fun in small surf and most importantly extremely capable in surf that some shortboarders would hesitate to ride. It is no Ferrari, not even a monaro but put it on a wave big or small and there is a strong possibility you will walk back up the beach smiling, stoked, satisfied.
I have absolutely no affiliation with any board manufacturers or sales people.

mid tide tends to be best - the gutter is good - but not that good.

or even high when the swell is super small (more swell gets in over the reefs) and the gutters arent too deep. High can be just too deep after a big front has gone thru.

Low tide can be ok but backwash , smaller waves getting in over the reef and closeouts are more common. But if its a work schedule thing then you just have to get out when you can. Can still be ok on a low tide. I tend to find the reefies like a low tide more.

The bank i like right now is right out the front of the Scarbs SLSC - some special little right on that - not sure how much longer it will last though..its strightening up a little more as every non front day goes past.

last summer i was paddling way down to dog beach and beyond to the south - had some great banks there right thru feb last year - with zero crowds! And it was still epic on mid to high with only .8 m swell at rotto! Perfect for those 35 - 40 degree days - magic even...

i'll probably hit it for my lunch break today. The swell at rotto has stayed above 1m...

There is something quite special about the 11'2 - it really is a fantastic all rounder- and it loves a rail grab back hand pig dog i dont care if i live or die kamikaze charge on a nearly too deep left takeoff. Get down low,Pull that rail up 15 degreees and you are nearly bomb proof!

When you work from home?

Last few days I have had beautiful peeling rights to myself in the metro area, not telling, only happens this time of year.

not me on the cam- that was mr too small board / too short paddle
on the next bank down - - you had to be in front of the car park (150m meters to the left - - off screen) to get the magic...

not a bad sesh today - actually pretty damn fun!

but the sweet waves werent as consistent as before - i'd give that bank 2 more days before its gone...

Miller and I went north scabs and met up with Eric who paddled down from Trigg.
The wind was a bit too strong late this arvo so I packed up before Miller scored the LAGO.
I just gotta say that I saw Eric get a sick right hander. I wish I had my camera. He was screaming down the line and locked into a nice little pit.
And I gotta say that PIG DOGGING the 11'2 is a goer... WOOT

Hey Greenroom, just reading back through this post and wondering what your current thinking was about the 11'2" versus the smaller boards you seem to be paddling lately. I know you were really keen on it but seem to have been getting a little action on the side lately! Ready for a divorce or just playing around?

Hey Jonathan, Im still madly in love with the Starboard 11'2
It has its place here in Perth. It has that super glide and ease to get onto the wave. Its captures the soul of longboarding.
The shorter Starboard brothers, the 9'0 and the 9'8, also have their place.
I have been on my 9'0 of late as the waves have been a little bigger and suckier.
Not having the extra 2 foot of board in front of you definately makes it easier to take the drop.
Just because the boards are shorter doesnt mean you will miss out on waves.
All the boards are 30" wide. Super stable and heaps surfy.
Is this the kinda answer you were after?

it's 30... unless sb have released another model....

one of their bigger board is under 30 wide.... think its a 12 footer. at maybe 28.. more of a flat water cruizer.

Thanks Greenroom, I'd kinda guessed that and I'm having a great time on my 11'2". Seems like I'm falling into the old windsurf thing of needing (wanting!) a quiver. The 12'6" is a definite keeper for flat water, seems like a smaller one is also on the horizon at some stage. The 12 footer Mr Easy is 32" by the way.

Magic - magic - magic! Another sick session.

.8 m swell at Rotto today-i thought for sure the swell would be gone today - it was actually better than yesterday- magic right handers peeling thru the bank ...still! Some were 40 m long ! (i think i got about 5 that went that far) A few surfers trying to get into it but couldnt get the wind up of speed required to thread the fast wall section. Some of the mals were making it look good yesterday.
A perfectly weighted 5 knot offshore just brushing the perfection.

Even some shoulder high ones - i dont know whats goin on with that bank - it just seems to be magnifying the swell. There was virtually no waiting for set waves - it was super consistent!

That session just took my love affair with the 11'2 to another level - i figured out the sweet sweet spots to hit reos and floaters consistently - once you figure it out the rails are just so forgiving. Starting to figure out how to bust out the tail too, off fin clearing nose ride, to get some threeos goin on - still havent landed one though.. its all love for the all rounder!
