Love to see how it would perform on a more interesting wave.

Quite possibly the ugliest 2:40 of surfing ever.

If riding a 6'4 x 40" or whatever it is makes you surf like that these boards should never be marketed.

Sorta defeats the whole idea of the SUP thing to me.
Would be interesting to have someone on a 9'8 or similar goin wave for wave with the small board to compare glide etc.
But then again if we all rode the same boards it would be a boring world.

Not so revolutionary when you consider Starboard have had a 6'6 in their range for a while. I wonder what their sales count is on that one, have noticed there has been one in buy/sell for quite some time now. Definitley an acquired taste/style.

Agree as well. You could surf it heaps better on a nice narrow 8'6". No drive, flat turns no spray - would suck to paddle as well.

I just find it interesting that Naish are having a crack! Why? It would be interesting to see how it would go in suckier, barreling type waves, under the right rider. It would probably fit in the pocket better and actually get properly barreled instead of a of a lip comb over.

A lot of people await the next container of shortSUPs, I guess you will have more reports then

Harsh critics , i thought it was alright , pretty gutless waves.Dont see the point in those small boards though , unless your jockey size.

have to disagree
the board looks like it works , its only knee high and a bit and he generates a bit of speed of the first wave, looks good.

Not a big fan of that surfing although it's good to see any footage on here IMO.

Hardly revolution again, even 7S had a board in the 7' range over a year ago and
it looks like it went better/or the same.

I think it would be hard to get any board working well on that flat mushy wave.

It looked pretty good to me.. Does anyone know for sure how wide it is?

30" to 33", You have the full specs here:

On the above, you can get a feel for the various rails & rockers: closer row from left to right (black - carbon - & red): 5'11" One, 6'3" Fatal, 6'6" Fatal round, 6'9" Mutant (wombat), 7'2" OD (egg), 7'4" Shake (egg), 8'0" Ala?aSup, 9'0" z?ro, 9'6" Soul, 9'9" Freak, 10'10"

On the row after (full red): 5'9" Finch, 6'4" Angel, 6'8" Miapolis, 6'11" Faking (wombat), 12'6" Sherpa (trekking), 12'6" Invader (surf+race hybrid), 12'6" Rage (race)

Note that the videos were done in Corsica, gutless mediterranean waves (short fetch).
The point of these boards is to offer new sensations in small/medium waves.
The fun part is the speed you get by driving them with your front foot, and the fact that the board goes where you mind drives them, glued to your feet.
The hard part is learning how to paddle and take waves with them, it is a new technique to learn (but that will benefit your handling of other SUPs)

Clearly, this is a new toy to have new sensations (and new challenges) to complement a quiver. Longer SUPs are still valid and tons of fun, too. ShortSUPs are not better SUPs, they are just different.

On the contrary it would be terrible in the barrell - too wide and too slow.

Has anyone seen the footage of the same spot but with Kai Lenny and a couple of others riding? They are going heaps faster and turning just as tight.

The guy in the vid looks like a very good rider and it looks like fun, I just wouldn't describe it as a 'revolution' more like a marketing tag line

i had a go of a new wierd looking starboard 7'2 or 7'3 ????? the other day kindly lent to me by lyn form yamba/angourie that gets on here on random occassions and had a few waves on it dish panning it to a friggin teflon coated hell and back then i jumped onto the starboard 8'5 and had a much nicer time dish panning it only with just a little bit of a hint of a the rail engaging and drawing a line(sorta kinda but not?????)

both were great fun in the small but clean waves

novelty factor priceless

That was basically the case, what you do not see in the picture is the horde of avid SUPers (me included) that came from all over France and were waiting for the signal to go and test all these new toys. It may be astute marketing, but it raised the awareness - and expectations - for the ShortSUPs immensely in France.
However, I tend to warn people to not try them unless you have some years of SUPing experience, (and a surfing background helps a lot) otherwise you will just end frustrated.

Gong have had a production 7'7" fish since 2007, but it could still be paddled somewhat normally (and with a flat rocker to ease catching waves ). The new generation needs a different technique (and a very short paddle), otherwise you literrally spin in place.
Some photos of the 7'7" in action for those interested:
www.gong-galaxy.com/magazine/pics/7-7-au-cap-vert1059/
www.gongsup.com/7-7-au-Cap-Vert,1054.html
www.gongsup.com/Cap-Vert,1002.html
www.gongsup.com/7-7-au-Cap-Vert.html
www.gongsup.com/7-7-in-the-wind.html
www.gongsup.com/Cap-Vert.html

I guess that maybe the Starboard 6'6" was not a big success because of the lack of education on how to paddle it.

Here are some video (mixed with other boards). As you can see, the shaper looooves 360s :-)

www.gongsup.com/Slip-on-the-galaxy.html?lang=fr
www.gongsup.com/Soul-As.html?lang=fr
www.gongsup.com/Carbonate.html?lang=fr

Myself, I never managed to get a wave when I tried... the thing is ok to paddle on the flat but insanely hard to apply power for the take off without spinning in place. Apparently you have to dig the rear of the rail paddle-side in quick "pumps" synchronized with your paddle strokes.
