All the more reason to protect it! The Gold Coast needs more quality surf to disperse the crowds , not less! Straddie crowd often isn't too bad though when there's good banks all along Main beach and Surfers Paradise.
It's been said before but the Gold Coasts real attractions aren't man-made. Start messing with the beaches and you take away what makes the place special in the first place. Tired old theme parks and overcrowded high rise accommodation are only a very small part of it's appeal.
Dont' get me started on the Tate clown! Another small-time politician trying to make a name for himself. Look at the last administrations desicions for Sth Straddie. A multi million dollar Island resort that is now a ghost town and closing down Tippler's!! Losers!

yer right this is really going to affect the 20 km of beach, a bit a of dredging in the seaway and around wave brake is going to make this one good paddling area, and the area on stradie will still be the same one k up the beach

a bit of dredging!!!!!!! they are going to have spent a few amount to underpin and deepen the sea walls. that's a lot more than a 'bit of dredging'.

as for good paddling, you most probably will be restricted or banned from the area.

TOS (the other side) if formed purely from the sand bypass pumping sand on South Straddie a few hundred metres from the Seaway. The Bombie (official name Deadman's) is a Sandbar just to the North of the Seaway , they recently dredged this and it was back in a couple of months , this formed by the sand sliding past the sand pumping jetty.

If by some freak of nature the manage to keep Deadman's deep enough for ships to come in , the whole of South Straddie will erode and Jumpinpin will change and start eating into North Straddie.

Show me one artificial reef , sand bypass or groin that works and I will start to listen .You can't stop the sand shift North. FULL STOP...

one point that seems to have got lost is as it stands, the area is free for 'everybody' to use.

that will be taken away

Its just been a great area to surf , sup or fish forever.
The seaway was only created in 88 I think, but has given so many people so many good surfing days (on both sides)
To have an area where we can escape the normal chaos of living in a big city, is priceless
Even though TOS gets super crowded it still deserves to be protected for everyone to enjoy (our kids may like to get barrelled in decades to come)
Surely we have enough Cafes/Dining/Tourist bulls##t here already
Not to even mention the $12 Million taxpayer dollars per year to dredge the seaway
and broadwater
If you think having Massive cruise ships and Dredges in the broad water will NOT effect your water activities no matter what you do you are DREAMING!!

Could not agree more ^^^^
Have not surfed the joint for a while but
Started surfing here in late 80's when me and a mate heard a whisper about the place and how good it was , and especially in a southerly swell, the southern goldie would be near flat from broady down and this place would be like head high clean and hollow. Feckin amazing place when its 4 ft plus theres plenty of spectators in the water, plenty of broken boards (contributing to the shaping businesses) and a few injurys. Even seen a few tinnies go over the falls,
Back then we used to paddle it just for a surf or pay Terry $3 for a lift on the old ferry if we took our rods and fished till the tides were right for a surf, usually high out early for the best waves. Anyone no what become of Terry.
Then that ba...rd JC started spruiking the place on the radio in the early 90's and the place started getting busy and we would just walk another 100 metres past the pipe to score.
So for me to see this place disappear so a cruise ship full of visitors can dock and spend a few bucks on trinkets and crap is crazy.
Any way
NO CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL for the seaway.

Yep its about money IMO and the Dumb pollies wanting to build something so they can put a plaque on it with there name. Look at the clown Newman just announced this week hes going to build a new flash building in brisvegas for him and his cohorts, it will have a plaque with his name on it.
the other end rocks, bit fickle though.

It's not only the surf at Sth Straddy that will be effected. Dredging and all the construction and infrastructure will stuff one of the major fishing areas on the coast, fishing being another huge money spinner for the area. Not to mention wrecking the only natural green space left between Straddy and Cooly, every weekend the area is packed with families.

And for what? Apparently there are studies that show that cruise ships bring stuff all into the local economy. Mostly retirees holding on their dollars. All their meals are provided. Tom Tate's other stupid idea was that, after he came back from Vegas, he reckons the Gold Coast should have at least six more Casinos. Great, turn the Goldie into another Vegas. He's like Campbell Newman, no consultation, just rush in on a trip with his new found power.
