It's coming and its going to be big!

The inaugral Southern Cross SUP Festival 2012 presented by d'Albora Marinas is set to take place in Port Stephens from the 24th - 27th May. The event is open to ALL competitors, national and international, but will also act as the NSW qualifier for the Australian Titles.

Its going to be four days full of surfing and racing, with the races based on the same format as held in Peru for the ISA Games, as this event is a stepping stone for NSW competitors to get themselves to Peru next year!

The other great thing is PRIZE MONEY....and lots of it. Exact figures will be announced very soon....

And best of all....there is a picture of Dogman on the poster ripping :)

If the waves are anything like last year it will definately be a good show!!

Yep Phil, Under 18s (as long as we get numbers....i will let you know how many to make it go ahead)

A lot of planning is going in to this event to make it awesome for all of us, so any feedback will definately be taken in to consideration leading up to the event!

HI Elyse,

Any idea on the format of the marathon race? Lots of good options for downwind paddling in and around that stretch of coast.

Sam.

Hey Sam, would love to hear some ideas, the race needs to end in the marina at Nelsons Bay (d'Albora Marinas are a major sponsor for this festival and have put heaps of work in to making it happen). I have a few options planned for different winds, but all will get a bit of side wind for some of it.

Would be great to hear from someone who lives in the area as well for some feedback.

Just confirmed that the marathon race will be open to being run on either the Saturday or Sunday to ensure that we get the best conditions possible!

The technical race will be held at one mile beach on the Friday, and there is options of

a. no run, except for sprint to finish
b. short run for lap change over (5 laps)

would like to hear what the general consensus is on this.

Ok i'm not from NSW, so my opinion probably isn't worth much, but...

Seeing as the technical race is the 1st stage for NSW competitors qualifying for Nationals and then ISA games, I'd like to see it following the ISA format with no run (and i'll be pushing for the same with the QLD titles race too).

Would be good to emulate the ISA format as much as possible throughout the Aussie selection process so we get the best team to compete over there next year.

Interested to hear other peoples thoughts on this too?

I agree Ali. Plus why hold it on the Friday after the surfing? How about the Sat or Sun depending which day the marathon is held?

Hey Goatman, the reason the technical race is being held on the Friday is that Thurs/Fri the event is at One Mile Beach (or backup options), and Sat/Sun the event is based at d'Albora Marina. On the weekend the Marathon race will be held one day, and a teams event the other, as well as a Short Course flatwater race, and a Dash for Cash where $1000 is up for grabs.

Can also tell you now that there is $8000 prize money up for grabs on the Marathon Race, Technical Race and Dash for Cash.

I just sailed off a mooring next to the marina back to Newcastle. If the marathon is an offshore event and you get the expected SW winds the coast is absolutely spectacular. Heaps of perfect little bays like boat habour that might measure out at 20 km. Once around Tommaree Head most of the wind at the southern side of the port is ussually a light off/cross shore.

The biggest challenge might be the backwash you get off Tommaree. Likewise, the tide runs fairly hard on the southern side of the port especially just before the marina from Halifax Point to the finish.

I would also be careful to warn contestants of some of the reefs like the bombie off Fingal Island.

Fair enough Elyse. Is there an 'old man's' category in any of the racing?

I forgot to mention that the little beach inside the marina is actually quite presentable, well maybe as long as you manage to dodge the whale watching and fishing charter boats. When I was walking along the adjacent Nelson Bay beach yesterday I was admiring how much the sand looked likke Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays. For those in the marathon, don't be fooled though, the coast is rugged and reminds me more of west Tasmania.

I am not really expecting any of you megga competitive types to pick up on this post. It seems to me that you have too tight an incestuous scene going than to be worried about the scenery! Likewise, I am not giving too much away.

For the rest of us, May is the perfect time to be up "The Bay" and it should be an excellent event.

Hoping for waves like last year

Sup is going strong here so we may get a few more locals entering this year. We've got a micro grom who kills it in the local boardriders club. I just made him a mini sup and he's starting to fire, if he can ride my board he'll dominate if he gets on a real one - look out juniors!

You're smackon surfershaneA. I have surfed and fished that part of paradise for the last 35 years, somedays are gold, somedays are scary.
I agree a marathon run from Boat Harbour/One Mile to the bay would be good. With a bit of swell running, who would take on the shortcut over Fingal spit.
Bill, your'e right about how strong the sup scene is around the area, two years ago if you were on a sup, people would think what the ...
To the organisers all the best and lets hope there is a replay of last years waves.

Craig,

I have spearfished the coast more than I have surfed it. I don't think there are any headlands or reefs up that way I don't know well underwater. It is a pity though I have not got a race board as I would like to give the marathon a go some day. Nevertheless, I am expecting we might catch up in the over 40s surfing?

I am also not sure if I would take the Fingal Spit "shortcut". That's a real six to one/ half a dozen the other option. Maybe we should leave it to the paddlers?

I am wondering as well what will happen if it is NE? It is a pity that running a charter to Broughton could be in the too hard basket? Maybe the marina might open the option? That would be another classic ocean race. The only other straight 20 km NE option would be 4wd up the Gibber somewhere?

See you there, Shane
