Just picked up my newy yesterday and am absolutely frothing on the tide so I can christen the beast this morning. Dimensions are eight six by twenty nine by four and a quarter. It's got the same drop or step rail that I have had on my last two boards in order to get the short board rail feel. Most signifigant difference is in the nose width. Have pulled this one right in as the following shots illustrate.
Nose comparison, old and new
The newy naked
The rail line
The new shooter, finned and skinned
Simon Forward of 4D surfboards shaped it after we sat down and worked through the design using his CAD program and Cuzzo glassed it. All in all I couldnt recommend these guys enough if you live in Vicco and you are after a true custom shooter.
Yahoo!!
I'm going surfing

Sparx, she looks really nice, got to say i like the shape of your other sup as well.Give as some feed back as to the major performance differences. Now go the SAINTERS. Tea tree double or nothing?
Wow!!!
Just back from a couple of hours surf time at the local front beach.Waves were in the two to three foot range, bit bumpy, nothing special. As for the board........... freaking revelation!!! I could crap on about the difference between a Formula 1 car and a dump truck, but having driven neither that would be ordinary. About as close as I can get is the feeling I had sometime in the latter part of the seventies when I traded my Wayne Lynch, six ten roundpin on a five ten Mike Davis twinny. This board is awesome!!! Its performance on a wave is so close to a short board that at times I found myself pumping along paddle free. When I remembered to use the paddle the radius on my turns tightened right up and it felt the way I always thought Stand Up should. Having said that, this board also humbled the crap out of me. It's been a long time since I fell off between sets but this board had me diving for crayfish on a regular basis. Twitchy is about the best way to describe its flat water charecteristics. Once you lose that area out of the nose, it's game on as far as staying on the right side of the board. Paddleing for waves was less easy than on the old board, certainly less flotation and glide and certainly more 'squirelly' as far as tracking went. One of the things that I love about Standup is that it can take you right back to that point where you are an absolute novice and every wave you make sends the stoke meter through the roof. This board has me frothing like a grom again on the challenge. I know it will take a while but once I get this board dialled in I reckon anythings possible.
Loco, as far as the rail go's this is the third custom I have ordered to have them. I am no expert but if the volume and shape of the rail is comparable to a short board, it follows that the performance of the rail will be similar. It's also a good way of leaving plenty of beef in the board without having to roll the deck heaps to get your rails down, thickness wise. As I said, am no expert but they work for me.

Hey Sparx- Nice boards by the way, am yet to and would love to try out a stepped deck. What's the width of the 'upper deck' and the width of the lower section of rail if you don't mind my asking?
Howdy and thanks Intrinsik.
The newy is 29 wide which should give you the wide point for the outside rail measurement and according to the Missus trusty dressmakers tape the wide point on the 'top deck' is close to 22 inches. Hope that helps.

hi, go unreal hey. my stepper is 28" and a bit and has more step and thinner.but from your photos i think i'm lighter(about 77-78 kg) than you.
sparx, ride your newie a bit, than go back to your other board
after riding my new stepper board, i just wasn't into my other normal board at all, it felt like a boat and turned like one
cheers
Howdy Lacey
Performance wise there is no comparison between the old and the new. You are definitely lighter than me, I think I'm somewhere in the low nineties at the mo (hope so any way) While the board is thick the rail is low, my crappy mobi photos dont do it justice. Given I have only had about two hours on the newy I am so looking forward to dialing it in over the coming month or two. Can't wait to start shedding some rubber.

check these out sparx
it's a tough board to handle, under a 100 Ls, but i'm convinced you generally wouldn't need to go ultra small to get performance using well crafted stepped railed boards
sparx, chuck some photo's up riding it when you get some decent waves
cheers
Lacy
That is sweeeet!
Its the old old story. If it looks good and feels good under your arm then generally its gonna be the business.
One of the local cruisers checked out my new board today and said, why? In other words why take all of the volume out of the nose and suffer the resulting loss in certain aspects of performance. Without getting to heavily into the round and pointy argument, and believe me I have no vested interest either way, I thought I would go into the thought process behind the new shooter. Purely and simply it's about horses for courses. The waves I most like to ride around home are short ledgy reef waves. One in particular has a vicious second section that will either offer deep tubes or heavy beatings. On a shorty it's easy, either backdoor the takeoff and backdoor the second section, or draw out a bottom turn and tuck under the second section as it unloads.
easy on a shorty
However on a Sup it's a whole different proposition
Bottom line is the more rounded nose was hanging me up in these conditions, catching regularly resulting in multiple arse kickings. The beauty of custom is that I could sit down with Fordy and say at spot X I am catching the front third of the outside rail everytime I come into the second bowl section and he replies, "Lets take some area out of the nose" Jobs done. If Robbie Naish or Mr Starboard lived in my local and surfed where I surf I am sure we would have exactly the same conversation, but they don't so we can't.
Sorry about posting up the same photos again but they illustrate a point.

Hey Sparx, loving the look of your new shooter, the step rails seem to be a good solution to the design of finer rails for SUPs.
All things being equal, how much better does a fine rail feel!!!
Stoked to see someone else amping on sucky waves on a SUP. I know a lot of guys go back to their shortys when it is like that - but I am too lazy The pulled in nose looks the ticket out there for sure.
Enjoy!!
Howdy Phill
Sounds like your new board will be a cracker. Woody certainly knows his stuff! His short board surfing impressed the hell out of me at Cloudbreak. I reckon he was best on ground the sessions I witnessed and would love to see him on a SUP. Say G'day from me. As far as next years Fiji trip go's the wheels are already in motion. The Minister for War and Finance has given it the green light and is planning the assault as we speak.

The short, pulled in SUPS are definitely a trip and are certainly not for everyone. Again it's not about ability or keeping up with the Joneses, its about fitting the board to the waves you want to ride. And your right, the four hours I have spent on my newy are probably the most physically taxing I have spent on a SUP since day one. Lots of slap supports and bracing just to keep me on the right side of the board and a degree of frustration with the lack of flotation and glide when paddleing for waves. But today was better than yesterday and tomorow will be better than today. When you get em on a wave they will guaranteed blow your fraking mind. God I love this sport!
Cheers

G'day Sparx
Goin for a jetski run with woody this morning. Yep Woody rips on a short board & yes you should see Woody ride a SUP he will blow ya mind the Angourie kid rips.
I'll be in Fiji all of May then July, August, September save ya money up for September come stay on Namotu we are organising a big SUP comp (mobile) + BOP race + 40km Downwinder info comming soon
DW
yeah kinda know the feeling riding a 9.0x27.5x4 @ 84kg with the board behind my feet being underwater... knowing DW(Phil) has about 8-10kg on me I was thinking his new board will be completely submerged???
very nice lines on your new stick...especially the rail to bottom edge at the back 3rd
