It's good to see that Sportsmanship is still around, yesterday at the Magoo Charity Classic in the Final of the sup one of the competitors snapped his leg rope (this has all happened to us some time or another) young Harry Maskell aged 15 lost his board and had the long swim in with is paddle and against the current (we all know just how hard that can be some times)
But he wasn't gaing any ground against the current and was slowely drifting out further and further
Cassio was closest to him and as young Harry got nearer Cassio offered the frount half of is Sup and they paddled in to shore
Up untill this time in the final Cassio and 2 other competitors were going wave for wave in a see sawing battle for first place unfortunality by the time Harry was droped off near shore and Cassio got back out (young Harry following on his board two) it was all over for them both.
Thanks Cassio job well done it's good to see that there is still respect for your fellow competitor when they get into trouble and I can tell you that this might have cost you the first place but it's only a trophy after all.
Young Harry Maskell didn't let this inserdent faze him, he returned out the back and got a few more waves to finish the final with Cassio.
Again Job well done

P.S
Peter Sharp also competing in the Sup Final got the best barrell over the weekend had he have made it out cleanly he would have walked away with this special award

Good stuff Casso a true gentleman (unless he can get inside ya lol)!

I had both Kai Bates and Marty chuck me my board in the last club round after my leggie snapped, there might be a bit of friendly hassling in the comps but most people are very nice at the end of the day.

Yes, it reminded me of the time Ray Gleave threw the world title to save a French girl drowning in the contest area. Suppose I was bloody lucky to win on default, still admitting I am even more surprised that I won.

Then how lucky was I to win first place in the ameteur division of one of the Newcastle Pro Ams by lottery draw when the event was cancelled due dangerous conditions? I have to admit I copped a bit of flack on that one for giving a speech on accepting the prize, not considering I did speak of public liability concerns.

Still, I did support the organisers decision to can the event, Mr Baggs included, despite the fact the final would have been on my home beach where I was more than familiar with the conditions.

Regardless, the conditions on the final day of the Magoo were much more contestable. Admittedly it might have been consideration that there was some sort of water safety especially given the professional nature of the judges and their services.

Then again I did manage to win the SUP then Old Mal back-to-back without a leg rope on the old girl. Joke is I thought I might need saving!

Hey, thanks again to Casso for going to the kids aid. I hope any of us would have done the same!

Hey, a funny Norah Head sportsmanship story.

My dad spent an arvo spearing kingfish off Norah Head so we had a couple of extra bucks to survive. Right on dark he had an incident with a shark. All he could remember was getting back in his tinny without his spear; or so the story goes?

So next day he goes to work at the power station and tells this young bloke Doug Nelson that he should come out and clean up on the kingfish with him. Dad sdmits he had a bit of an incident with a shark, but Doug trusts Dad and does not really think about it.

So they get to the Norah Head boat ramp all ready for an arvo spearfish and there are these old blokes bringing their boat up on their trailer. They look at dad and Doug in their wetsuits and ask what they are up to.

Dad casually admits they are going out to spear some kingies. One of the old fellows turns around and says your bloody mad, there's a shark out there bigger than our boat thrashing around with something hanging out of its head.

Doug told me the story and admitted he went pale, but still went out for a spear. Talk about sportsmanship?

Thanks again Casso for being an equally as nice a bloke!

Well I am stoked to hear that nowadays the best tube ride might actually go to the surfer who got the best tube.

Back in the mid 90's I got second incidentally to Mr Sharpe in the 8' division of the Steel City Classic. During the final I got a tube that looked like something from the Pipe Masters. A lot of people thought I might have won.

So it comes time for the best tube award and Mr Baggs gives it to one of his cronnies for a half second cover up. No coincidence again that this was around the time Mr Baggs was taking over long boarding from the Steel City Club.

The poetic justice was that both waves were on NBN TV. I had people walking up to me for months totally blown away by my tube riding.

Then there was the time I won the ameteur division of the Newcastle Pro Am run by Mr Baggs. Gary Burdin hurt his back, so the flatmate and I got his boards back to our place, made him a bed then got him to the comp the next day.

Months later I pick up one of the glossy longboard mags. There was no mention of the noserides through the pocket I got to win. In fact there was no mention of me or the flatemate whatsoever. Instead there was a write up saying Garry Burden should have won if he had not hurt his back.

So you can call me a sore winner, but I have been burnt so many times that I am happily giving up comps again. Hey, at least I am not out to physically assault anyone like has happened to me at the last two comps. Both times the attacker was a sore losing so called local legend. Thanks to my mate who is an ex pro kick boxer for calming the situation down at the Magoo. It was a real pity something like this happened at such a great event.

And then this one time i got shacked in indo for like about 3 Hours. it was a world record and everyone said i rocked!
That was just after i beat Slater at Pipe in 97; history doest show it in the record books cause i was ripped off. I took off deeper than Lopez ever did and then did this hack that blocked out the sun, all on my mal!

Well this was a feel good thread that took a bit of a turn. Nevertheless, kudos to Casso, and to all the SUP competitors who happily put one another's safety and wellbeing ahead of personal glory.

PS. After last night's Four Corners stitch up, it's possible we could teach the clubbies a thing or two.

Yes, it is unfortunate too that I go in these things for fun only to regularly get burnt by a so called professional head judge. I also note that all I have done since has been to praise Casso for taking time out to save the kid.

Before we put too much trash on the clubbies I think we need to address the issue of why there was no water safety at the Magoo event. The organisers paid profesional Surfing Australia judges to run the event. They had a spotter and are currently encouraging members to participate in their water safety courses.

If the Surfing Australia staff were duly diligent they would have planned for the conditions and had water safety procedures in place. Merely posting a thread like this after the fact does not satisfy their gross failure to consider the safety of the participants.

Thanks for the recognition Phil but I think most of us would have done the same thing once they saw the look on young Harry's face while treading water in the impact zone.

Casso,

Nicely said and I am sure we all would have. Results aside, I am so glad you were closest as I had the two finals back to back without paddle out time and no provision for a leash on the old mal. I hope things go better at the State Titles!

Hey, I am sure I mentioned on here somewhere that as an eighteen month old kid I sparked a little boy lost search at Norah Head by jumping out the bedroom window and going down the rock pool by the boat ramp on my own accord. Even then I was hooked on going for a dip and watching the blokes surf; bloody Magoo! (Though thanks for the great memories!)

No wonder the old bloke Nelson always used to give me a hard time; before most kids even got out of nappies I was one monster hardwiilled youngster who wanted to spend his life in and around the sea!

No doubt too this is why being left out (a form of bullying) and some of the other bad vibes have upset me so much. Maybe I thought I was going "Home"?
