8km downwind race on Sydney's Northern Beaches this Sunday at Midday. Should make a nice start to the NSW racing calendar.

When: Rego will be starting around 10.30 -11 am with race to start promptly at 12.
Where: If the forecast for NW hangs in there we'll be running from Mona Vale Basin to Fisherman's Beach, Long Reef. If the wind swings the course will be reversed.
Who: Anyone as 8km isn't too much like hard work on almost any board.
Categories: 12'6" and Unlimited.
How Much: $25 if a member of Paddling NSW or $30 if not.

I know it's short notice but the Kevin Long from Pacifica Outrigger club is super keen to embrace SUP in to their regular racing format. Soon we will be able join Pacifica which will make life easier for these sort of events.

who's going to be there on sunday ? apart from Kev being a mate, I think we should rally together and create a real strong SUP presence at these races and others like it (fenn cup).

At the excel up on the goldy that a few NSW guys went to, there were probably 70-75% SUP out of the over 100 strong field. It would be awesome to start seeing that here in NSW.

Anyway, just some thoughts. See you guys on sunday...

Would have loved to but I'm away this weekend.

Great to see they have a 12'6" class.

If anyone wants to pay for my flights to Sydney, I'll join in.

Hope you guys have a great race and the weather comes to play for you.
Hopefully I'll be able to make the trek down south for one of the next few Pacifica or Fenn Cup Series races.

hey mate, here is the poster for it. Prone paddle boards are included, and yes it is 12'6 and under.
With conditions the way they are I would say that rego area will be mona vale basin, at 11am-11.30am

Looks like I got the cost wrong. Still well worth the effort if you've got the time.

If anyone is keen but doesn't have the gear I have some boards in the shop I'll happily loan out for the first couple of events. Just let me know and I can get them in the van and to the start line for you.

See you on Sunday.

Sam.

If swell stays up how easy is it to get in and out for the race at the planned start and finish?

Not going to be able to make it - have to work tomorrow so everything for the whole weekend has to be compressed into Sunday, just hping to get out for a paddle at this point

Hey guys, how did the race go?
I just looked at some of the photo's on the Pacifica facebook page. Sunny at the start and a massive hail storm at the end? Looked like a tough race.

Very different race. Started off pretty close to downwind but about 2km from that's where the race got interesting. Lighting, hail and 30-35 knot headwinds. At least it wasn't boring.

53 paddlers turned up in all of which there was around 10-12 SUP guys which looks good for the upcoming Summer given the weather and shortish notice. Even better still is that all the paddlers finished which given the conditions was a great effort.

When I see the result I'll put them up.

As Sam says pretty horrendous hail storm and squall half way through race. I don't know how the SUP's handled it as I found wind/hail hard enough on a prone board and was worried hail was going to punch holes through the deck of my board.

yeh it was pretty crasy. seeing a OC1 paddler bleeding from a hail damaged head as we came in said it all. It was a really well run event though, and great turn out. will post some shots when they come through

Yeah apart from the headwind, lightning and hail it was great race. Wouldn't be a downwinder in Sydney without the headwinds though.
