Starting out SUP in Perth

Alright I'm looking at getting into SUP over the next couple of weeks and will likely buy a board too should I enjoy it as much as I expect too. But before all of that I want to know whether most people have had lessons when starting out as I have looked into it and there don't seem to be many around the perth metropolitan area. I was wondering if it is easy enough to handle by putting in the time by yourself or are lessons needed ?

Any help will be appreciated.

if i can do it , anyone can

find a nice piece of flat water, without any wind, to learn on,, after a couple of hours you'll be dialed in.. looking to head for the waves.. it's easy peasy

go to a a couple of shops to get the best advice,,, save yourself time and money by getting the best board for you first time...they will also give you the basic tips on starting out i'm sure.

loads of shops in perth, all helpful, with demo boards to try.

good luck, enjoy!

As windy miller said.

I have absolutely no balance but managed to learn all by myself, it just comes naturally.

Good shops in perth are:

Stand Up Paddle Sports in Osborne Park and Nedlands;

Windforce;

Westozkiteboarding.

They should be able to set you up no probs. A good place to learn is Matilda Bay in Nedlands on the sheltered side. Nice and flat and no wind.

I agree these two kooks have no idea and still are ordinary. I would get lessons if I were you

I am the kook of all kooks now

Flat water paddle went well just starting to get strength back in the leg. Long way to go. Drove Belly on a downwinder today did some beach walking in the sand. Very frustrating

Dont know why but pictured you walking on a beach to some Kenny G music staring into the sunset waiting for Belly to return .

Will message you to catch up for a paddle when you are fit again.

You forgot about Greeny sitting with Bellys towel, growling at anyone walking past and pining for him till he got back.[:D

cheers for all the help. Have been looking through the website and other places at second hand boards so I know what to expect when I go to buy one. Anyway was also wondering where most people go if they are into catching waves a bit more than paddling on the river ?

Also if I am looking at SUP surfing more for waves what size board is best for me just so I know what I should narrow my board selection to ?

I'm 6"3 and 95kgs

for your size and weight, get a Naish Mana 10'
Will be easy to catch waves.
When you want to step to a more hardcore board for waves the resale value will be really good on the mana unlike some other boards.
Try the waves between North Mole freo and cott. most are pretty chilled and the reefies just off shore are easiest to learn on.

I weighed the same as you when I started and I have an 11ft NSP.
Lately I have had a chance to try a few different boards and still find the NSP the most stable.
It catches waves ok, but for learning it was great. I am going to get another board for surfing soon but I will keep the NSP for the flat stuff.

I am going to try a 10' mana soon so I'll let you know the difference.

I'm 6"3 and 95kgs

10 2 JL Mano
10 6 or 9 11 PSH rippers
9 6 coreban performer or 10 Icon
Numerous starboards about 10 foot

Looking at about 10 foot by about 30 inches depending on your balance and if you are up for a challenge and happy to put the hard yards in. Smaller the more challenging but the rewards are that you do not need to downsize soon as you out grow the board.
