The very successful Sydney Paddle Surfing Club has expanded to include a racing section. The drive behind the club was the enormous groundswell of interest in Stand up Paddling across Sydney and the Northern Beaches with many people sharing a common interest in flat water paddling, time trials and cruising as well as a strong contingent who enjoy ocean paddling, down winding and ocean racing.

From many discussions and survey feedback, there was clearly a desire to bring together these common interests in a more coordinated and better communicated manner under a club umbrella so that we could:
- Arrange SUP specific events rather than tag along to other paddle disciplines,
- Bring SUP enthusiasts together for regular competition, fun and participation events,
- Provide coordinated and regular training and development opportunities to support skill development and progression
- Provide opportunities for new people to be introduced to SUP through trials, demos and fun events,
- Create a strong SUP identity and community

The most effective way to achieve this was to expand on the already established and successful Sydney Paddle Surfing Club (SPSC) which has held SUP Surfing specific events at Palm Beach for the past 5 years and has a strong membership base - most of whom also enjoy ocean and downwind racing.

The SPSC Race Club Committee has already been heavily involved in supporting the Sydney SUP Downwind Series - the first SUP specific series of its kind with the flexibility to choose the best conditions for racing on a given weekend.

Our Plans.... Over the next week or so, the Committee will be finalising the membership offer for new "racing, down winding and recreational" paddlers to join SPSC and letting you know how you can join the club. All of our existing SPSC Members will automatically have access to all the training and other events listed below but will have to wait until next year for a new shirt offer ??????.. and there will be one.
Your new SPSC membership will include the following benefits:
Free access to regular weekly SUP Fitness training each Tuesday & Thursday morning [Non Members $5 per session]
Discounted fees for regular JPP activities each Sunday [Minimum $5 discount for SPSC Members]
Free ION wet shirt valued at $59
Discounted fees for regular Interclub Events and Demo Days at Jamieson Park Paddle
Access to club branded merchandise, including caps, shirts and hoodies,

Many paddlers will have participated at some stage in SUP activities at Jamieson Park Paddle on Narrabeen Lake. The Club is very fortunate to have the support of Sam and Dale at JPP to make Sunday mornings on the lake a collaborative event with the Club using this as a "home base" for members. We are working with Sam and Dale at JPP to expand the number and types of events that run each week to include :
-The existing 5km time trial, a new 2 km casual paddle for new paddlers and those preferring a shorter (less race focused) activity,
-A number of fun and varied races including NISCO races, team relays, and kids races.
-A regular skills session on Sunday mornings - this will include technique training, fitness and stretching, Yoga & Pilates, SUP specific weights and strength exercises.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family & friends as a member of SPSC and helping us create a world class SUP Club for the community. Please share this information with any family or friends that may be interested and please feel free to discuss this with any of the committee members at your convenience.

Dear SUP Racer.

We are very pleased to announce that Memberships for the SPSC "Racing & Downwind" Club are now open for subscription.

The initial 6 month membership period will be pro-rated to July 2014 when the existing Paddle Surfing members and all new Race & Downwind members will come together under the one membership category for renewal from July onwards.

The simplest and most convenient method to sign up and pay your subscription of $70-00 is online via our new TidyClub portal which can be accessed via the following link / web address:

us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7342ada53569a18d6080b7af3&id=e97a8d90f9&e=fd1145544e

There is a small additional payment fee to the portal provider which saves the club having to invest in credit card and merchant facilities and we appreciate your support.

Alternatively, we will be holding a members sign up day at Jamieson Park Paddle on Sunday 19 January from 8-00am to 11-00am in conjunction with the regular JPP / Club activities.

Your free ION Race shirt will also be available for collection on that day and we hope for a great turnout for the time trial and other activities.

Your new SPSC membership will include the following benefits:

????Free access to regular weekly SUP Fitness training each Tuesday & Thursday morning [Non Members $5 per session]
????Discounted fees for regular JPP activities each Sunday [Minimum $5 discount for SPSC Members]
????Free ION wet shirt valued at $59
????Discounted fees for regular Interclub Events and Demo Days at Jamieson Park Paddle
????Access to club branded merchandise, including caps, shirts and hoodies,

Many paddlers will have participated at some stage in SUP activities at Jamieson Park Paddle on Narrabeen Lake. The Club is very fortunate to have the support of Sam and Dale at JPP to make Sunday mornings on the lake a collaborative event with the Club using this as a "home base" for members.

We have been working with Sam and Dale at JPP to expand the number and types of events that run each week to include :
????The existing 5km time trial, a new 2 km casual paddle for new paddlers and those preferring a shorter (less race focused) activity,
????A number of fun and varied races including NISCO races, team relays, and kids races.
????A regular skills session on Sunday mornings - this will include technique training, fitness and stretching, Yoga & Pilates, SUP specific weights and strength exercises.

Many of you will already have participated in the Sydney SUP Downwind Series which has been a great collaboration with JPP and we are already looking to 2014/15 for an even bigger and better series. In the meantime, we hope to see you this weekend for the O'Neill Race 4 of the series.

All of our existing SPSC Members will automatically have access to all the training and other events listed below but will have to wait until July for a next shirt offer ???.. and there will be one.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family & friends as a member of SPSC and helping us create a world class SUP Club for the community.

Please share this information with any family or friends that may be interested and please feel free to discuss this with any of the committee members at your convenience.

...and Lacey we're having a close look at the insurance coverage. Glad you're on the mend. One positive from your experience is that we're going to get more first aid training and really look at what insurance actually provides us.

Can someone explain the SUP 5.0 concept. I have heard bits and pieces but not really sure about it? Is it handicap? Age based?

Kissa - the SUP 5.0 concept in its simplest form is a standardised format for flat water time trials and has evolved from the JPP time trials that were previously run over varying distances from from 4.7km to 5.3km.

The "5.0" reflects the 5km distance which has now been measured more accurately with GPS plotter and additional marker buoys added to the lake so that there is a consistent course format and paddlers can establish their PB times and personal improvements with confidence.

By using 5.0km it provides some nice measurement benchmarks - 30 minutes [ave 10kph] becomes the stretch point for those elite guys who can really push it. We have made up a magnetic leader board ala "TopGear" style for paddlers to post their PB times / dates as a visual record and incentive for improvement.

The 30 min benchmark acts like a scratch handicap in golf??? everyones time above 30 minutes becomes their rough handicap e.g. 33:00 becomes a +3:00 handicap which is used to stagger the start times so that we get a reasonably bunched field finishing the time trial.

We are hoping to integrate some online tools in the future to allow individuals to track their regular performance and chart their progress. Together with JPP we will be including regular technique and other training sessions after the time trial and local sponsors have generously supported regular weekly prizes for PBs and other incentives.

FAQ's
- There are no board classes as its not a race. Paddlers can ride whatever board they want to set their PB time.
- No age handicaps
- Are there specific rules on drafting - we don't get hung up on it. When the big guns aim to set a lap record e.g. Steve Morrison this weekend - we will separate the elite paddlers by a minute or so to eliminate drafting and get the whole field through so there is a bit of excitement and drama ?? at the end.
- course design needs to be at least 3 turns with an "out and back" shape that equally compensates for any wind or tide effects

At the end of the day its not rocket science and we understand there are a number of formats running across the country - 4.2km TT, Paddle Loop style, 1 km GPS etc. - that may suit different paddle groups, locations etc

In conjunction with the newly formed SPSC "Race & Downwind" Club on the Northern Beaches, we are hoping to get a few other sites in NSW to use the SUP5.0 format and start to use it as a basis for inter club events and sharing of results and ideas.

Flatwater time trialling doesn't excite everyone in the SUP space, but we have found like many others locations, it is the entry point for so many people coming into the sport which is why we have a 2.0km casual paddle for new paddlers and those working up to 5.0km. As we have discussed in the past, the training, technique and general fitness benefits of a regular 30-40 minute flat out paddle are huge.

Not to mention the Bacon & Egg roll, competitive banter and coffee all included for $10 (for club members) ??? what a steal !

We see great benefit in creating a standardised format across the country but lets get the pilot sorted first

Hope that helps???.. see you Sunday for a 29:59 run ?.. time to get on the board

Great concept I compete in a similar event hosted by the Sandgate Canoe Club but it is open to all craft (Kayak, Sea Kayak, Ski, SUP etc.). It is run on a points basis, points for first across the line, for attending each race and for beating your PB. As the event is handicapped potentially anyone can win the day and at the end of the series person with most points is the overall winner.
Well done and I hope this is as big a success as it has the potential to be.

The Sydney SUP racing scene has perhaps been a bit of a sleeping giant up to now. It's a bit scary to think just how big SPSC is going to become.

Don't know how you can say that Paul. Sam Parker, Dave Kissane, Andy Davies, as well as the onslaught we bring down for the Winter Classic, Creek to Creek etc.

Then there's a huge crew who are all paddling extremely fast and have only been paddling 12 months. You won't even have heard of these girls and guys. There are guys and girls coming out of the wood work. SPSC racing, downwind series , Ocean Series, SUP 5.0 time trials, JPP time trials, regular Wednesday night NISCO races.

It's that scary Travis moved to Hawaii and Jacko is talking about hibernating in NZ with his side kick Stevo.

Be afraid very afraid.
