I was talking a friend of mine today about Sup. He told me it was boring from what he had seen and told me about the god old days. He once represented WA as a cricketer and is now over 60 but his other passion was goat boating. He told me about a time when this champion came West and showed the surfers at Margaret River how to goat boat. He sat inside them on a big day and they were laughing that he was going to eat it. However he made the waves and could even do aerials. That was surfing he told me.

I said it sounds like the Goatman who now Sups too!

I then said I will look this dude up and you can see if he is the man. My mate told me it couldn't be him because he would be too old. I went to the pc and googled Dtm surf and then sponsored riders. We came up with his bio and my mate said " wow that is the Man". I played a clip and said is that the stand up you have seen and he said no, that is just like goat boating so no wonder he so good.

I don't know if there is a moral except if we want to improve we should Goat Boat too! The other moral is that while the mind is willing we need to keep playing.

Here is to the Goatman.

good post John, I don't think it would have matted which surf craft Goatman chose he still would have been good. I had a brother that had surfski, another brother on a kneeboard and at times loved havin a go myself. The key to keeping interested and active is diversity imo. ride anything and everything.

Ha ha funny to hear the old goatboat stories Johndg. Yeah we used to go to Margarets area pretty regularly back in the 80's and yes I am old[}:)]

They were great days and am lucky enough to have some lifelong friends from that era (a few of em even SUP)

Kakkerlak, I was mates with Nikki for a few years, lost touch now but notice he is the head shaper for Coreban - small world.

PS: DTM and Jedi you are funny little men!

I'm sure this has been posted before... but here you go Rob

I remember a few old mates of mine from the Goldy that rode skis always told me that Christo was leaps and bounds above everyone else. This would have been back in the late 80's.

Goatman it was good to get a bite from you. I have called my friend and told him of the post. Having checked the video i can see that there are some similarities between supping and goat boating. Interestingly I saw a video by Rambo on the Doctor race and ended up buying an epic ski. I discovered that the paddling principles are basically the same for all paddle sports and then started to understand sup paddling.

I ride a Laguna Bay and DC sup now, so i do support local manufacturers. I had a look at DTM and will bear them in mind in future.

Thanks for the response

So did Goatman do much time on a ski out Nobbys Reef, Newcastle? It kind of had me wondering when he paddled straight to the takeoff zone in his first O/45s heat when everyone was struggling to work the place out. His full name also rings a bell.

I did a lot of time out there on a prone when skis where big and the waves often as big again. It was never a bad vibe. If anything the skis kept a lot of the other prone surfers who I was out there avoiding away. Just a pity now there are not more SUPs getting out there keeping the plsce paddle friendly.

I surf Nobbys before work on SUP regularly and always find the vibe friendy.More kneelos than anyone else these days.
I actually surfed the reef on the morning before the titles got under way.The ski riders are all very friendy as well.
Easily the best place to get out in Newey when the swells up.

@ Snappy,

I probably just miss you. I don't crawl out of my bunk on the yacht moored illegally across at Horseshoe till after 8. Then I need my morning cuppa while I check the weather and forums. I plan to do some voyaging till Christmas, so keep up the presence. When I get back I will be looking forward to a bit of company other than not so friendly visits from the Maritime.
