Hi Everyone
Save the date for the next SUPWA event. This is the first of our State title events (We we hold State titles for - Sprint, Downwind, Marathon and Surf) and it is going to be HUGE!
Starboard have generously come onboard to sponsor this event.
DATE - Saturday 10th of November
WHERE - Champion Lakes Reggata Centre
DETAILS - 200m Sprint State titles for Men and Women on 12'6 and 14' board classes (sorry no unlimited class for short course)
The Top 12 paddlers will then go onto a "Battle of the Paddler" race on the same stock Starboard boards. This will be held over 500m to decide the best paddler.
Add to that a Peter Dorries Coaching Clinic after racing- this is the event event of the year!
Stay tuned for more details.
Sounds great Greg, it's just a shame for me (and possibly a couple of others) that I have already put my name down for the Wedge wave comp kitesurfing state titles on the same weekend.
Guess it will come down to the forecast wind = kiting, no wind = paddling, win win.
Sounds great Greg another great SUPWA event any idea what board size for the battle will be .
Great to see Peter Dorries he's trained one or two good paddlers in his time .
Stimo,
For the Battle of the Paddler there will be two fleets of four boards the Ace Pro 14' x 28 and the 12'6" x 28.5" BOP.
We will have one of each down at Pelican Point today at our School / Rental from 8.00am till 12 (unless we get blown off the water) if anyone wants to give them a try out.
We chose good weather to re-open the school But at least we got in some good lesson before the rain yesterday.
We will arrange some other times for guys to have a paddle between now and race day.
Will update when we lock in times.
Cheers,
Ian
Additionally to the above, the 12'6 and 14' will be weight limited (Battle of the Paddler only) to switch things up a bit.
12'6 will be <85kg
14'=<85kg
There is a possibility of some interstate paddlers coming over. More details posted soon.
Is there a state title for each type of racing or do they all add up to one state title? Eg. Will there b a state champ of down winding and one for sprint etc. or will all your results from different events add up to the one state title? Cheers.
Sorry just realized that is for battle of paddler only. Forget I said anything. Another cool sounding original event. Thanks supwa. Cya there.
Online entries will be up soon for the Starboard Black Blade. We have just finished the draw.

Hi Greg,
Ashlea wants to do this event but has no 12'6, do you know if it will be poss to use one of the starboard bop boards? I wouldn't mind doing both divisions also but only have a 14 :)
Thanks,
Ben
Ben,
That will be no problem with the boards.
Any one wanting to get a bit of practice in on the BOP 12'6" and the Ace Pro 14' before the 10th I will have some of the boards down at Pelican Point this Saturday (3rd) for any one that is racing to have a paddle and get familiar with the boards.
Cheers,
Ian
The Starboard Black Blade 2012 State SUP Sprint Championships
A great day for the Starboard Black Blade. We had beautiful conditions at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, with virtually no wind for the 200m State sprints and a moderate tail wind for the 500m Battle of the Paddler.
A big turn out of Paddlers contesting the first ever WA State championships and first ever 200m Sprint Championships in the World outside the USA (on an Olympic rowing course). The distance created some exciting racing for spectators and the paddlers enjoyed the new format.

The Battle of the Paddler is a world first event. The top 12 paddlers from the 14' division and the top 6 from the 12'6 qualified for this event. The paddlers were weighted and those under 80kg were designated on a 12'6 board, those greater or equal to 80kg were designated on a 14' board. Starboard provided 4 x 14' Ace Pro boards and 4 x 12'6 Ace Pro boards. There were 3 divisions:
Female 12'6
Male 12'6
Male 14'
The event was raced over 500m to give everyone a chance to get used the new boards. The weight division also lead to some interesting racing, challenging paddlers and creating new contests/battles. Paddlers loved the new event, with everyone appreciating being on a level playing field and the challenge of moving a different board.
Battle of the Paddler Female 12'6
1st - Michelle England
2nd - Lorrayne Grullis
3rd - Jade Lane
Battle of the Paddler Male 12'6
1st - Marcus Tardrew

3rd - Jackson Shaw
Battle of the Paddler Male 14'

Special thanks must go to Ian Grose from Starboard Australia who supported the concept from the start and assisted the event in developing it from a novelty race to a premier event that will be contested for years to come as part of our State Championships. Further thanks to Starboard and Stand Up Paddle Sports for sponsoring the Black Blade event with the Peter Dorries Coaching Clinic and their dedication to supporting SUP racing in WA.
Thanks to Canoeing WA and their volunteers for allowing us to participate in their sprint series and running the event for us. It was great to meet some new paddlers from other disciplines and see what it takes to run a sprint regatta at this level.
Extra special thanks must go to Jodi Earnshaw, Suze Thomas and Ashlea Hammil, who sacrificed their racing to fill in as volunteers. Thanks girls you were beyond awesome!
Thanks to the competitors for making the day and the ever solid SUPWA committee for always bogging in and getting the jobs done.
Well done everyone
Greg

What an awesome day out, a great venue and another great event thanks Greg, your hard work is paying off with new and exciting race formats. A massive thanks to Ian and STARBOARD for their ongoing support, it is really appreciated.
Fantastic facility and great day, 200mtrs doesn't sound far but do a few runs then a couple of 500mtr runs in the Battle of the Paddle and you certainly know about it.
Seemed like every heat you ended up racing someone right down to the very end.
Big thanks to SUPWA, Greg and every one that helped out, in particular Ian Grose who supplied the boards for the battle of the paddle, what a great concept.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the race this weekend and at Pete's clinic on Sunday. I've got to say i never expected to be doing anything like this on a SUP but it definitely works! It was amazing how gruelling it was. I was completely fu#!ed later that night.
I'd just like to join the others in saying thanks to SUPWA and Greg in particular for a huge effort and to Ian for the great support.
A couple of photos from the end of the day with the Black Blade Battle of The Paddler trohies in the foreground.
