Stand up paddling comes to the 2013 Frankston Water Festival with the inaugural running of the Vic Open of Stand Up Paddling. Races over 10km, 6km and 1500m on January 19 and 20, 2013.
Spectators will get a great view on Sunday with the running of an inaugural SUP X event where competitors have to negotiate a number of buoys to test their paddling skills and board handling and turning ability.
Competitors from Victoria and interstate will be taking part in the event which is the SUPA Victoria stand up paddling flat water championships.
Rob Towan, the Victorian state representative for SUPA said he was excited that the event was part of the Frankston Water Festival for 2013.
The Vic Open of Stand Up Paddling is hosted by the Peninsula Paddle Club and is part of the SUP Australia national championship series. The event also forms Race 4 of the SUP VIC Victorian Flat Water SUP Championship Series 2012-13.

Hi Pt
I'm down from Sydney without a board and paddle. I normally ride a ACE 14* 25 .so question is where do I hire one for the 6 km race?? Ph 0413043810 if u can help. ( over 40 division) .
Hey Ruckus,
You should give RPS a call. They usually have race boards available for hire. Not sure if they can offer an Ace, but maybe an Ace Pro. You can get them on 03 9525 6475.
Looks like super fun and Woody the show down is coming all 3 Page sisters are squaring off in the 1.5k race. The trash talk has started, short sheeting of beds has commenced bring on the weekend
Congrats Cam and Jean on today's DW distance race.. and congrats to all those who competed and gave it their best shot.. Tomorrow will be interesting.

Camo took line honours as well as Men's Masters, Chris Clarke won Open Men's with Heath Meldrum next across the line.
17 year old Matthew Nottage absolutely killed it on a 12'6" board, finishing 5th overall vs a bunch of more experienced paddlers on 14'ers. Look out Jake and Lincoln, there's a new kid on the block.
The Women's race was pretty close, with Jean Ringrose outlasting the fast charging Lucy Bell. I think Kristi Page scored the Unlimited Women's first on her brand new SIC Bullet 14'.
Jeff Lim won the Over 50s Men and Lynda Lim made it a family affair with a victory in Over 50 Women. Kathy Naoumidis was first in Women's Masters.
Terrific event, great conditions and for the first time in Vicco, we got to have a genuine downwind race. Well done to Peninsula Paddlers, PSUP and SUPA.
Thanks for the comments PT - it was fun to be out in such great downwind conditions and to see everyone having such a good time and enjoying the conditions.
Just a taste of things to come for the Winter Classic in August - hope everyone stays in training!
Off the line in the 10k down winder in perfect conditions
Dogman taking over the stage at the Frankston Festival

Nikita and Shaynesha Page charging out in the 1.5k race
PT Woody drafting Matt Nottage
Nick trying to reel in Lightening Bolt Leon as he kick turns the buoy.
Thanks DJ and Chris, Dogman calls my rig the "anti tank gunnery implacement", but it gets the job done.
Phill
great shots Phil
here is a few shot of the awards ceremony held in my honour later that night in a black tie affair
for my tireless services to humanity, the arts and of coarse world peace
a new age bert newton......yewwwwwwww!!!!!!!
bahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
That's gold Doggy!!!
Thanks for all hard work helping out with the races and Sup X. The Sup X was all hard work after 2 days of racing. Maybe next time, you make the race go for 2 laps, 1st forward, 2nd backwards. That will be good for a bit of carnage!!!
hi chris
mate yours n zeb's faces "said it all" after that first heat
PAIN!!!!!!!
great spectacle to watch for the general punters along the pier with all that action so close to them
i can see that style of race being a "one design" format
...and maybe even with inflatables or soft boards
as that last 360 turn around the spinning board of death (named after you "nutted yourself" on it) may and eventually will definitely get out of hand
SUP-X... coming to a beach near you. I too, would like to thank Dogman for inventing this challenging new format, but it's a bit like thanking Madame Yvonne down at the Hellfire Club after a thorough spanking.
And yes I agree inflatables or soft tops would be ideal but really the format just requires everyone to be on SE boards... (someone else's board).
It would be safer with soft boards, and that test run, hurt like hell!!! After that it was all about getting a good start and not falling off.
I think if it wasn't so close to the other race's, we would have had more crew and carnage, which is always good.
Tentative dates for 2013 Surftech SUP Winter Classic weekend are August 10 and 11 - waiting to hear from Surfing Australia on dates for their National titles as don't want to clash with that.
Will definitely include a SUP-X or get The Dogman to devise something new and exciting for the weekend!
