There are so many waves around Indo that would be epic to surf the sup in!! This is defiantly one of them!
Chris as you know there are also some waves in Vicco for those those with balls big enough that will swallow a SUP easily.
That may be true, Phil, but you sure as hell won't be pulling into them in shorts!!
That board handled it well - anyone know what them boys ride?
How could you not paddle out if there's surf like that.......?
Terrific post with brilliant surfing. These are the guys that paddle out prone then sit on their boards and jump up when they see the wave then wobble around and paddle into the wave. They are usually on really small boards and rip bags and it looks fantastic. Is it stand up paddle surfing though when the only time you use the paddle is to get into the wave and then help you to turn your board? This is a serious question and I'm not judging just asking for opinions. Mine is that if I was their age and had their ability I would use a short board. You can get deeper in the barrel and work the face inside. The Vaz bros do amazing things but to me it's like driving a modified shortened Rolls Royce in a formula one race, it's doable but why? If they did the whole thing standing up on larger boards then that's different then because you're actually driving a stock Rolls Royce in its own class in challenging conditions. This is just an opinion and certainly not a condemnation of the fantastic stuff they do. Opinions and thoughts would be appreciated because I must be missing something
Leroy13 I couldnt agree more. not a fan of people prone paddling sup boards unless they are in a S$#T location and need to get away fast. These guys rip and its amazing but not compared to someone on a regular prone shortboard. I think its more impressive when i someone paddling out in difficult conditions and still ripping it up on a SUP.
The original SUP Surfing Comps in Hawaii included in the point score , the return to the take off spot standing, waiting between sets standing and the use of the paddle to generate powerful turns.Should this criteria be included in today's judging criteria?
Ah,what would a kid know!(just joking)
Thanks for that Cola's I think its an interesting question. I'm positive it's because I'm just plain lazy. The wind and resulting surface turbulence would also aggravate my hip replacement and very much challenge my average ability
Ahhhh Nias was there 25 years ago and yep that is one place I would Sup especially 5 foot and over as I miss barrels on Sup and that place gets perfect

PT yes they should be included and I would add in power surfing in the critical part of the wave is what should score in the excellent range.
The only time more than 2 paddle strokes on the knees as they put it is allowed is in extremely windy conditions and it should stay that way!
I would also add that the SUP surfing is judged on SHORT BOARD CRITERIA and length of ride without critical manouvers is pointless and should be scored that way.
I stopped going to Noosa when I saw long waves with little or no directinal turns ridden to the beach get 6-7s in the womens and waves with 5 & 6 90 deg+ turns get sub 5s.

Who would sup Nias?
I don't think I would SUP Nias If I ever do get to SUP Nias? I'd be on my 12ft PSH gun. I surfed Nias way back in 1982 mate there was no one there maybe 6 surfers it was very primitive back then I even got Malaria had to spend a week in a Singapore Hospital I was f####d up. I surfed the place 12ft on a 6'8'' Single Fin some Big Stand Up Barrels "Yes Please Mr Wizard" Nais is known for breaking like Hawaii's finest. I nearly drowned on one occasion I even hit the bottom which was unheard of at Nias before the earthquake, one more second and would not be siting here today what a flogging I got "heavy". I believe it breaks more constant now since the earthquake but with 60 guys in the take off zone.

Awesome footage , charging where I come from , admire there ability is what I enjoy , should be called big ball brothers. I bet there were crew out that day that didn't even get near the take off zone , shoulder sitting on surfboards , that's not surfing either .To get barrelled on a sup on a wave like that , you need a narrow board with a low rail , hard to stand on that waiting for waves . I myself like the adaption to get amongst it , puts a lot more waves on the sup bucket list .
i'm with roachy, there are plenty of crew that sit out a session without catching a wave, mostly on shortboards, and there are others that just charge for the sake of charging, regardless of equipment...life is all about having a go; if someone tried telling me the vaz brothers aren't having a go, i would try not to laugh...pop quiz, can you do what they're doing? ps, phil, love the photos, classic memories you must have mate :) my wife n i had an ugly blow up in 1997, she went back to australia, i went to nias...and asu...and bawa...happy days! (we're still together)
personally i think jacko's sup barrels would have to be right up there with the best. he gets pretty deep in side them.
