Yes Please Mr Wizard
2013 Burleigh Single Fin Preview filmed with ION
Looking for a reatively inexpensive waterproof camera (video)with board mount etc. I've seen this brand on the net for under $200 with freight.Does anybody else have any experience with them...Cheers
Mr Downwinder, Please don't take this the wrong way but your camera is crap.
GoPro has sold 3 million cameras over the past 3 years. I think if you showed more patience with the initial purchase of your GoPro, you would have realised the benefits of such a great product. God help you if you ever try to assemble an Ikea TV unit.
BP
Hey Iron Phill.. Just wondering if the fogging issues that you've had in the past with your GoPro's is not actually fogging at all but just salt water drying on the lens.
It looks the same when you view your vid.. and if that's what it might be it will not matter what camera you use because if you get it wet (with salt water) then let it dry you will have the same problem.
I've done well over 150 vids now with my GoPro's and I've learned to try not to let salt water dry on the lens and all's been good.. I've never used any anti fog strip inserts or done anything special.
DJ
Dj, I have no horse in this race, but one thing is for sure, humidity plays a big roll. And yes there is a difference between GC and Vic.
I want to see some footage from these cams pictures of helmets with cam on top doesn't sell it for me.
Like you Husq, I have no horse in the race, and Lord knows, GoPro has p!ssed me off on a number of issues but all of them unrelated to fogging. Nevertheless, the point about a water housing being prone to fogging whereas a camera with no water housing will not fog is not entirely true. All it takes is a little moisture to get inside the camera with no housing and it will inevitably find its way to the lens, not to mention the electronics, and then the whole camera is cactus. At least with a GoPro style set up, the fogging can be rectified. With a non-housing, the moisture in the lens will be there EVERY TIME you use the camera. So how does a camera without a water housing allow moisture inside? Generally through the chintzy seals that open up to access the SD card and the battery and cable connectors. But also the seals around the lens and the case joins. I've had multiple Panasonic and Canon cameras of this type leak like a sieve. Each time, they replaced the camera under warranty because it was cheaper to do that than actually build a camera that does what they claim it will do. Anything in this price range is not going to be foolproof, much less waterproof to the depths quoted by the manufacturer. You really need to spend somewhere in the order of several grand to assure the construction quality to really seal out water. But for under $350, you just have to be aware that you're not buying a Jacques Cousteau movie camera and then be happy with what you have.
Well said PTWoody for the first time you've made sense. Yep for $350 you get a cheap camera with no Water Housing that may last one day or 12 months in doesn't matter still better than a GoPro.
How about this one
The CES showfloor is littered with a variety of action cameras this year, but few of them offer any truly head-turning new features, save for the Geonaute. Developed in France, the Geonaute action camera records 360-degree video and still images, which users can later explore from almost every angle on a computer or mobile device.
View all
The Geonaute is equipped with three 8 MP cameras fitted with wide-angle lenses to capture everything in a 360-degree horizontal and 150-degree vertical field of view. It records over 2 hours of video onto a 32GB microSD card and can be controlled with a wristwatch-style remote, so you don't have to fumble with the settings while it's strapped to your motorbike helmet.
The camera is lightweight at under 200 g (0.44 lbs), shockproof, and comes with a waterproof housing. It also comes packaged with several mounts and adapters that allow it to connect with many accessories for sports enthusiast currently in stores.
Geonaute also collaborated with startup Mindrevo to create the WeSphere platform, which allows users to pan around their video as it's playing. On a PC, the image can be clicked and dragged to look around – similar to Google Maps – while a mobile device uses either the touch screen or gyroscopic controls to let the user view the captured images from all directions. The WeSphere platform also incorporates a suite of editing tools to alter videos and images almost immediately after they're captured.
The idea is that filming in 360-degrees frees up the user from having to worry too much about camera angles, leaving them to focus on their skiing, biking, snowboarding, etc. The camera even works well in less extreme situations, like a dinner with a group of friends for example. Then, when viewed or shared later, anyone watching it can experience what was recorded in a much more immersive way.
Detailed specs for the Geonaute action camera:
•Video mode: 360° spherical | Res: up to 2048x1024
•Photo mode: 360° spherical (single shot, burst, time laps) Res: up to 4096x2048
•FOV: 360° Horizontal and 150° vertical
•Optics: 3 x wide angle lens
•Imaging sensor: 3 x 8MP CMOS sensors
•Weight: less than 200 g (incl. battery)
•Autonomy: 2+ hours (Li-Ion rechargeable)
•Storage: microSD up to 32GB (MP4 file format)
•Interface: micro USB
•Resistance: waterproof rated to IPX7
•Waterproof housing: 100m
WeSphere Platform Features:
•360° video player

•270° panoramic photo viewer
•Basic editing features
•3GB of storage space included with camera purchase
•1500 songs available for use with movie editing

The Geonaute action camera should be available in the summer of 2013 at a price of $399 in the U.S. and €399 in Europe.

Ive owned all three GoPros and had fogging with all of them until I tried seagold anti fog gel. Ive only tried it on the 3 but it has not fogged once and have had it out for two hours in the middle of the day. When you get out of the surf it looks like there is a bit of water in the housing but its the gel absoring all the humidity. No more anti fog tabs for me
Have 2 gopro's a 2 and a 3. Since changing the casing on the 2 to a diving case and using the anti fogging things, must admit not an issue.
ive got a black hero3. awesome. remote. one touch record. my tip is keep it wet! it clears drops on the lens etc. hasnt fogged onced yet.
Just spent 3 days in a booth at surf expo right beside Go Pro and I am blown away.
Good people and the Black 3 is mind blowing quality. Won't be long until they shoot Hollywood movies with Go pro let alone some kid uploading his ride to the shop for milk to YouTube.
The full range of accessories is ridiculous and top 3 quality promo girls.
Don't know why poor ole Phil gets red thumbed so hard on the camera reviews.
I own a go-pro hero 2 , Sony Action Cam & the ION cam , the only one that doesn't fog is the ION. I'm putting something together pretty cool using the ION , it will be finished in the next week or so.
Function wise , ease of use , no fogging & most of all it's shape puts the ION at the top of my list.
Geez,I got a hero black 3 for xmas and from above it doesn't sound good,I agree with OG re DJ's videos are above water line.
On the gopro, since xmas I've been waiting for accessories, float, board mounts and handle, all the shops have been sold out and I'm told weekly it will be here next week.
I got the camera to see how sh-t I surf

Piros,is this the camera you used. I want to buy a camera to use in the surf and this subject has now opened a can of worms. I dont want to buy something to have nothing but probs with it, either fogging or downloading the footage. Really just want something easy to use that takes pretty good picture.
Cheers Mark
Yep that's it and don't worry about the wifi it's not worth the extra bucks and like all the others a pain in the arse to set up.
