We know the Thruster works and we know the single fin will never die (even if Euthanasia was legal), but there is a lot of hype around the Quad right now - both Tom Carroll and Matt Granger (local Sydney big wave charger) swear by them.

So if your into quads - whats your poison?

This is what the boys in Hawaii are running right now - Futures Pancho or JC's at the front and controllers at the rear.

Pics please!

Yep I like the fins i put in my Naish, didnt like the big ones they came with or the simon Anderson Large made the board to stiff and mal like to turn.

Robdog's son Adam (shredder) got my on to some FCS 4s they are very small and work awesome, i would also run these on my shortboard

I'm a Quad junky here are my favorite rigs.

On my 8-8 Ofishal 4.5 in front 4 inch in rear.

On My 8-10 Future AM2's single foil in the front , 4" or under in the back pending size.

On my 9-10 Future T1's single foil in the front AM2's in rear double foil. Plus the new Gerry Lopez Quad set similar size the this set up but they are more swept back.

Ah funny you should mention quads AA as one of my best mates pretty much invented them. Bruce Mckee used to shape my goat boats for a couple of years in the 80s and was heavily into them then. Here's his take on the best setups - bear in mind these are for shortboards

http://www.mckeesurf.com/brucemckee/multisystem.htm

He even has some goatie models of his own and now rides and SUP and lives in China (after years living in Spain)

Hanging to try them on my next SUP.

i used the fcs 4's for ages in my old 6'7 shortboard gun in juicey waves until i snapped it heaps of drive and great release off the top

tried them in my 9'3 for a while but ended up using the simon anderson's for more grip for long drawn out turns

Looked at those ended up with this

Smaller back fins seemed to loose drive that is why I like the look of the new PSH fins

Hey Doggie, yeah I know Adam rates them on a shortboard and also said the Hawaii shredder Dustin rates them.
They do have great release off the top and I guess i must say sometimes i like the skatey slippy feel you got from them on a sub.

I found the simon large to stiff and tight for my liking but thats just me

I've got a set there pretty big and very swept back , my 8-10 didn't like them BUT my mate has them on his Gerry 8-11 and he loves them.

so i guess it is important for the board to be designed as a quad from the get go. And in saying that the boards that come with a 5 fin box set up are some sort of comprimise.

then there is the thought that a good design thurster is better than a bad design quad and vise versa.......

what are the elements of board design that work with a quad, ie what is different?

Wow, interesting guy! I remember the McSki and the Bombora Capricorn!!

Bruce reminds me of Mark Paul - another innovator who designed the Bombora Tri Fin and a lot of the first pop out high performance windsurfers.

The are of lot of untold stories behind the scenes.

Worthy read! Thanks Goatie

I am well Lacey thanks.Been back on my shortboard since Xmas,so not talking to you guys at the mo,lol, nar had a few cracks on the SUB.As for the quads,I usually surf a split tail fish having lived at Crescent head for 30 years,so for me the quad SUB was no brainer, love the drive, response, and looseness of them, and hey,its all about fun yeah?

As a general rule the longer fin base, and more sweep back, gives you more drive. Like the AM's (1 & 2 - bigger boys should take the bigger options). Kelly 3.0 is very similar.

Less rake and bigger tips, and less base, provides more maneuverability, and allow for tighter turns in the pocket...

Quad Set-up - Big Fins front and back definitely gives you more drive (but less maneuverability). For me, I like the drive down the line...

But by all means, play around with your fins. A mate of mine swears by using 4 side fins, 4 full sized side. For short boards he swears by AM's up front and GX side biters on the rear. He favours GX over the specialty Quad Fin GXQ (in FCS).

Futures - AM2 is the large one, and AM1 is smaller
FCS - G-AM is bigger than AM-2.

I've always found that stiffer fins give you more drive too, but the flex fins are probably better in small waves, and are also more forgiving.

If you love singles, just make sure the leading edge is nice and sharp (not blunt). A blunt leading edge will cavitate more easily when you crank into turns, and the cavitation means spin-out. I ride a quiver of singles (short boards) in amongst other stuff, and I'm yet to spin-out a single fin, but the fins are all sharp leading edges, and they are all True Ames Fins.

I had a meltdown with my waterhousing so was down for 2 weeks. Just got everything sorted but the surf has been lame with lots of wind. Should get some good stuff soon.
For now here is a sequence taken Friday.
