What did you paddle or ride before SUP if anything at all?

As a grom it started for me with a bodyboard, then shortboard surfing and surf life saving. With kayaking, dragon boat racing and mal riding to follow. Now nothing but SUP unless it's work related.

I'll give you the short story, I started on a 11'2" Barry Bennet 3 stringer, Then dad bought me a brand new shortboard, an 8'10" Klemm Bell 'Plastic Fantastic Machine', (Nat Young won the 1968 World Championship on a similar board.) Then I went to a tiny 7'6" George Rice followed by a miniscule 6'9" Klemm Bell shaped by Kym Thompson (we are in 1972 now). Next came my first custom, a 7'2" Ripcurl double Flyer swallow tail, shaped by Donny Allcroft and the last one that I will specifically mention was a Pat Morgan 6'2" Fish shaped by Strapper Circa 1974. After that I could usually get discounts so changed boards frequently through Pat when he managed Ripcurl and Lorne Surf Shop run by Mel and Butch (they had Lynchy shaping for them)Thanks guys are you still alive?. Up in QLD I surfed Hayden for a short while but then developed a connection with the then Moffat Beach Surf shop. I don't know what it's called now. I shared a house with Louise who managed the shop for her parents. I usually surfed excellent boards shaped by Mick Parkinson I think. For twenty odd years then I surfed mate's boards as my children and I grew up. I'm now on a 10'2' PSH paddler that can do pretty much what the 7' 2" Ripcurl could do. I'm happy about that!

Started on a foamie around 74 then got a beat up kneeboard to learn to stand on. I thought twin fins were gimmicky but knew thrusters would work, surfed pipe dream boards then on to mad dogs (bob margets). Mark Platter shaped my sailboards. A multitude of various shapes since then. Discovered SUP about 18 months ago and dreadfully hooked.

Started surfing at 11, then a bit skating on the side. After 22 years surfing short boards, I landed in Perth, tried to keep surfing but took up kiting. After 3.5 years of getting tired of only relying on wind I begged the misses and got a SUB which has kept the sanity.

I forgot one thing, canoeing and surfski racing On an Off for 16 years.

Cheers
Rich

Wakeboarding and snow skiing. Weirdly one of the strongest initial appeals of SUP to me was because the paddling stance is very similar to how you stand on a pair of skis.

Started on Terry Fitzgerald shaped Hot Buttered single fin in the late 70's. Stayed with shorties until the mid 90's when I started to dabble in longboards. Always had at least one of each in the quiver until I took up the paddle. Still have a 6'10 but it hasn't seen the water for a couple of years now.

Surfed short board as a gromet up until about 20. Then stopped surfing regularly. Rowed surf boats. Haven't surfed since 95. Started SUPing flatwater 5 months ago and will be picking up a Sup for the surf by summer. I am looking forward to getting back out there.
Trying to locate dvd's of The Performers & Mad Wax to really bring back the memories.

My favourite background is like in the cartoons. You know the one where it just repeats itself over and over.

I spent some time in the Circus after a brief stint in the French Foreign Legion. As chief elephant scrubber it gave me a unique bent on life. Don't look up for too long!

Some of my best body bashes were in that Cooly shorey with a stolen tray as a grom. Thanks for bringing back that memory Jay.

Speaking of Body surfing, check this.
