And if so where and how much? what time of year is best?
thanks in anticipation all you old fat guys!
Regards ... The old fat guy
Here's a promo vid for a great SUP spot in Thailand for fat old guys. Yes, I have been there and I found it one of the most confronting places I have ever been. Only seconded by Manila. Watch this and laugh.
SandS,
Thailand has three seasons which are as follows:-
SUMMER (mid Feb to Apr)
RAINY (May to Oct)
WINTER (Nov to mid Feb)
I was there last year in March/April and depending on where you go as to what the temp is like. I would be thinking if you are going over there purely for water sports that you will more than likely be hanging out in the South (Phuket etc). The temperature year round regardless of season is 26-32/34 degrees so any time of year depending on how much you want to pay. Obviously school holiday periods and peak travel times are going to be your most expensive.
I wouldn't stay in Patong Beach but worth a look, this is where all of your boy/girl bars and shows are etc. There is a lot of neon signs at night and rather interesting.
Nicer places to stay would be Krabi, Koh Samui if you are after an island if on the mainland head around Karon or Kata Beaches.
There are heaps of places to go and depends on what you want to do there as to where is going to suit you best.
Whatever you choose - have fun.
thanks , cmc , but I was after a SUP location for old fat guys. Not a location for old guys with a fat.
Have surfed in Phuket area a few times .. and being a fat old guy have spent most of the time in Kata, Kata Noi and Karon (they have a SUP shop on the beach near Mom Tri's Boathouse hotel) .... Their is also a good break on the reef just out the other side of Phuket and a good all round surf spot at Kamala ..
The Islands in the South have shifting breaks haven't surfed them .. All over its mostly local wind generated waves and best around June, July .. at other times its best not to expect a surf .. But !!!!!
Perhaps the guys at Starboard could give you some leads ....
Thanks everyone , some very good information there!!
not sure what to do really ,{ use to be undecided , ...now i,m not to sure}
Would be nice if it was semi for sure going to be waves but sounds a bit fickle ?
Starting to think, why would a full time worker who lives down the coast, take leave from work for a couple of weeks ,to go over seas, and spend a fooking fortune on the off chance of getting some old fat guy waves. And walk around in the [on the ] heat going from bar to bar.
maybe I would be better off doing a road trip up nth and sleeping in the back of the wagon ,just like the goodol days.
fuel and cans of baked beans , to get out of the comming Vic winter, when it gets really cold !!!
maybe i,m just a tightass...? well i know i am!!! just carnt justify spending craploads of cash on airfairs and accomodation for two weeks of beer and possibly surfuping.
hey if i choose not to go ,Julia Gillard may give me a big tax break for not flying in a jet aircraft, may trade my carbon paddle for a foresty pine version also hahahaha
what would you do ?
Best thing I ever did sands was buy an old camper van I have all my surf gear in it if I wont go up the coast I just go sleep at the beach whatever grandson & mates come along the old girl don't wont to know about it ,I only go overseas to keep her happy and thats either the Goldie or Byron
SandS - I don't think that you will be happy if you are just going to Thailand for a SUP'ing holiday unless you are prepared to do spend all of it on flat water and checking out the limestone caves. Don't get me wrong parts of Thailand are spectacular but when I went I did the whole country in 21 days. Depending on your accommodation the place is dirt cheap. I also did Vietnam last year and again if you are chasing the waves not somewhere I would recommend.
If you aren't sure what to do, then why not pack up the car and head off up or down the coast and just move around when you want to.
I spent 12 months in a tent, 4wd and a tinny travelling around Oz and loved it. We have so many special spots here in Oz to visit it is incredible.
Good luck with your decision.
I've been fortunate to spend half my adult life living and working in Thailand and throughout South East Asia as a small group adventure tour leader.
Spent years living in both Phuket and the North.
As far as cultural experiences go I'd rather spend my time in Thailand's North than Vietnam.
Thailand's cultural diversity is rich and varied but one has to look past the tourist traps to find it.
If the waves were not co-operating in Phuket you could paddle for days through out Phang Nga bay and it's limestone karsts and blow your mind with it's scenery.
By all means stay home and spend your $'s in the Aussie economy. Lord knows we need it.
But I could live extremely well for a month + in Thailand on the money I exist upon here in less than a week. That's just the cost of living. Plenty of choice on how much money you want to use in regard to accomadation and food etc.
There's the easy way with packages which will cost you plenty or there's the figure it out as you go way which can save you large amounts of money and put you in touch with the locals.
sands from the north of vic through all the way too the north of fraser island you have a GOLD SUP mine right here in your own back yard my friend.
keeping the dream alive
If you are keen on having a new culture and fat old bloke surf. Maybe some of the softer Bali waves and Gurupuk on Lombok. Don't know how it would go down with all the surfers there tho. If you do go to Gurupuk let me know as I think it would be a fantastic SUP wave ... crowd permitting
