I met bruno in France last month as he invited me to try his SUP foil in brittany.
This pic is from last week in marocco at the Dakhla festival.
I can tell you something, the guy is a legend !
He is putting so much R&D into so many different kind of craft he'd deserve a medal

Do you get it going just by paddling?

yes I did have a go.
Strange feeling when you paddle on a wave to go suddenly about 80cm higher in the blink of an eye. And then ...no more friction (at least for some very few seconds in my case)
Pretty hard to control to start with!

Hi Al,
Foils are not that hard to make, they can be made in all sorts of configurations.....but generaly they are just an imersed wing.
I can give you details on how to go about it, or there are some on eBay for around $950......they may be carafino (google them)
Actualy learning on a sup would be the best way to go....get towed up & get the flying wired then progress to paddling onto a wave. Learning on a sup avoids the problamatic water start......your already up! Then tow around without trying to fly, or foil....keep the board on the water till you get the hang of the fore aft foot control.

Cheers

I know foil is not new but to make it work on a SUP is a different story.
4 years ago bruno started trying to adapt the kind of randel foil to his board but it was not efficient, to much drag. Of course if you have a craft to tow you it's a different problem.
I tried to paddle with his new foil and the kind of foil you show on your pic.
There are worlds apart.
The foil he is using is very light and the hydrodynamic is indcredible so you start to fly on the tiniest wave and keep the energy for a very long time.
I have seen him staying on fat small waves for so long it was amazing. When we switched boards (same board different foil) he could not do half of what he was doing with the good foil.

Yes all valid comments.....you have me inspired to play with foils again, the main reason we stopped was the hassle of launching a boat/ski & having to find an observer to keep the cops happy. With sup it would be so much simpler.... just a matter of having the right conditions to go try a new main foil, or it could be towed for evaluation when there are no sutable conditions.
I have suggested the ebay foil because it would be a great advantage to master the tow foiling first.
The main foils are made to a speed range appropriate for an intended craft & its method of propulsion. Its similar to the principle of wing loading on aircraft....F-18 compared to a sailplane....the former has the glide ratio of a brick....the latter an eagle
Certainly the alloy airchair stuff is very agricultural & heavy, i made mine from light weight carbon MOTH shaft then made the main foils interchangeable, it was amazing what would work.....even 2 joined sailboard fins with a bit of anhedral, (important when span increases to reduce surface ventilaton when carving turns) The greater the aspect ratio or span of the foil the less drag, but this causes the ventilation problem when carving turns. If your just gliding along straight & level like on a sup then not a problem.
Have you got any shots of the foils you rode that can be shared with us?

Two joined slalom fins.....worked well at higher speeds

yes I do have a pic (a bad one from my phone but still you would understand)
I just asked bruno if he is ok for me to put it on the internet.
If he is fine with it I'll put it on the thread.
In fact he has been trying to play with it a bit like you for 4 years and once he knew what he wanted went to see the guy that built the hydroptere

He told him what he needed and the engineer came out with the design and the autoclave finished product. It is a very fine hollow carbone finished product
Initially it has been done for windsurfing.
He went to the speed week of DOUARNENEZ and everybody was blown away how quick it was compared to huge crafts made for speed.

Then he put this foil on a stand up and was amazed by was he was able to do.
When I went to see him last month nobody apart from him ever tried it on a SUP.
Your feet are not attached to anything so there is a serious safety issue there. (ask brian keaulana who injured himself recently trying to do the same).
Bruno sells the foil with the windsurf board as a package.
For the SUP side of thing he does not know how to sell it since he is aware it's not made for everyday use and could be very dangerous. You have to be almost only on your own, far away from anybody.
I wanted to try to see if I could use it for downwind more than anything.
I am not sure I would be welcomed with that on my normal surfing spot!!

Do you need a paddle a couple of feet longer?

I had my long distance paddle
As soon as you get up you don't use the paddle anymore
