I was thinking this recently as I am looking at a pre-loved 16' ATM. I think most of the races in Sydney over summer only have 14' and 12'6 categories. Still good for non-race fun tho.

Gee you guys are short in Perth Or is that just Goliath on the white 17'

Yep I recently bought a DC 15'6" known as the cheater board on the time trials here. It is great and fast and though it has natural advantages over the 14 it helps bridge the advantage the 25 year + younger paddlers have over me.

Love the unlimiteds

^ pretty close to goliath, around 2.18mtrs (7'1"+) I believe, it would be pretty unfair to expect someone that size to compete with guys on a 14.

G'day teatrea the unlimited boards are the Rolls Royce of Downwind Paddleboards I have 4 of them 3 in Australia and one on Maui from what I've seen though I must be the only bloke on the Gold Coast that paddles unlimited SUP's. Your right though teatrea not much talk on the unlimited, what I've witnessed Australians only have a 14ft mentality? if there not got a 12'6'' BOP style board! and the Australian manufacturers would be laughing (good for turnover) But I'm not into 14ft or 12'6'' SUP's. I've gave a few people a go on my Unlimited boards 17ft, 17'6'' and 18'6'' and just the look on there face tells the story from the glide and speed the unlimited board gives.
Unlimited boards are very expensive as well! and from what I've witnessed there is only one bloke on the planet that can make a decent unlimited SUP and that bloke is Mark Raaporst a true master craftsman and thats not pi##ing in his pocket! and I'm so stoked he is a close friend.

Trying to put A LOW PRESSURE PRODUCTION together just waiting for epic conditions 25+ knots SSE winds with a 6ft+ South Swell I've got a helicopter lined up and two jet-skis, trust me no GoPro s##t for this one. Be the full Downwind vid

We did have Luc on a 12'6x25 a couple of weeks ago! He didn't get wet, although it wasn't easy.

Hi Lacey I'm at the beach every day surfing, fishing, training or working and have never seen anybody paddle past on a board bigger than 14ft. But hay who cares what size it is, it's whatever floats there boat.

Most of the races in Sydney are open to "any" board and most of the guys have Bullets for downwinders...we have all pretty much accepted that a quiver of racing boards is required
Unfortunately, we rarely get Maui conditions in Sydney so most of the time i prefer downwinding on 14s...

Hay Kissa have you ever paddled an f18 ? in no wind or wind under 15 knots they are a weapon of a board "Built For Speed" with long Glide. I've paddled the f18 in 25 knots and yes you need some ability plus you'll need someone to help you carry it up the beach to your Truck in that wind or you'll get punished.

A f18 was not built for Maui Maliko conditions Mark Raaporst made the f18 for flat water or to paddle in winds of 15 knots or less.

Who is importing SIC into Australia at the moment?

What are the dimensions?

What is the cost of a F16 / F18?

Overrated I'd say about being able to play basketball. Lol.

I paddle 4 to 5 times a week and usually take out my 17. I'm not much smaller than Luc, although much lighter (only 125kgs). A 17 for me is like a 14 for most below average height people, (that's under 6'6" tall).

Last year I could enter races here in Vicco and have my times go towards the "Flatwater series". It wasn't as though I was going to win any awards but that wasn't the point, it gave me a reason to train and enjoy the camaraderie of the competition. This year it seems as though I can only enter "fun races". It has totally turned me off even attending these events.
Surely as a new sport trying to encourage participation why would you try and alienate people because of their board size. Why can't there be an open division in all events? Is it a cost thing, trophies or extra paper work? It's happening with the women too having to paddle 12'6's now.

As it is now I'm using my old crusty 12'6" Starboard more and really enjoying catching a few bay waves or taking my kids snorkelling around the local reefs. It has allowed me to get back to the reason why enjoy SUP'ing so much, just being out on the water.

Don't piss people of because of their board size, embrace them all and watch the sport flourish.

Still good for unlimited's in Sydney. Most of our racing is classed as just racing and if you win on a Bullet you win. Most race days tend to suit the all round 14's but if the day is right the Bullets will come out on top for sure.
The boys heading for a run.

I believe there's only two f18's in Australia mine is 100% styrofoam custom 18'6'' and a guy in Victoria has a stock vacuum bagged 18'6''

My f18 is my favourite Downwind board for Australia conditions I paddle it a lot.

I look at it like this:-
I paddle the custom f18 in 12knots of wind or less or when I'm train in the canal (magic board)

I paddle the custom f16 (it's the only one of it's kind in Australia) in 25knots or more wind the f16 comes into it's own and it's faster that the Bullet in those windy conditions - it has been proven.

I paddle the custom Bullet in 15-25knot winds I find the Bullet performs best in 20 knot winds (the Bullet is a slow board in winds less than 20knots)

Hey Phil - not paddled the f18 and not likely to given the quiver i am accumulating - it is not an easy board to hide and i am sure "she" would notice something new at that size
