i'm happy with it. qb would be stiffer. race paddles are normally of the little flex in the shaft type.

I saw Lacey's broomstick paddle last night under the cloak of darkness and after having spoken the secret pass word and provided the ritual handshake and me thinks he's onto something. Much more comfortable and lots more power to the ground.

I am more laughing with you than at you Lacey!

Up until the early 90's the bulk of the Hawaiian outrigger paddlers had no T tops on the paddle , you will still see this today with the surfing steering paddles , so what Lacey has done has some merit. There is heaps of vision of Connor Baxter not using his T grip just holding the shaft. Definitely worth a try..

I like it.

I added this handle to my Ke Nalu today. Used a bit from a old broken Pohaku paddle with an oval shaft. Since Ke Nalu's go together with hot glue it was pretty quick to do. I little hot glue on the shaft and some hockey tape. Feels good.

Only problem is I'm going to have to avoid Connor for quite a while. I gave him a bunch of crap about his stroke this summer when he was at my house in Hood River. Hopefully he's forgotten it by now. I'm going to go tell Lewis Hamilton how to drive and give Mark Webber some tips on passing later on.

I made a lower handle yesterday that has one of our ergo handles with a 45 degree section cut out of it, then epoxied and glassed to a piece of shaft so I could slide it on. Tried it yesterday--very clumsy. I think this will be better.

So if we knock off this handle do we call it a Lacey?

i did the 12 towers race with the handle. my findings are roughly this.

great sprint start. i found it really good for linking runners. missed out a bit on the digging deep power paddles to get those hard bumps. one thing i noticed was i never even looked like falling off where other paddlers were saying how rough it got towards burleigh.

even when the bullet pearled off to the side a few times it wasn't a problem

after talking to some of the guys, i managed to fit a normal handle on top.

i think the slight tilt forward is good and the bottom grip stopper on the angle fits to the bottom of the wrist nicely.

i reckon this way you get the best of both actions. you are able to mix up the muscles in use ie when you get a bit fatigued one way you can changed to the other.

i think someone could produce this as a carbon handle attachment no problems at all.

its not that radical to change your hand underneath and then go back on top and visa versa. just more options to suit what is require to the conditions and situations.

pono bill, one paddle would see me off

cheers

After seeing Conner Baxter use what I like to call the "Conner Clutch" on the shaft for fast/rapid paddling, I gave it a go and it definately has merit. Feels more comfortable, less stress on the shoulders and gives different muscle groups a workout while the usual muscle get a break.

Lacey you really should get a patent on this grip, I think the slight angle, the contours and lower cup to allow increased downward pressure all appear to work together well. Perhaps you should be on the phone to Conner as well so he can endorse the handle.

I'm just re-posting to get this back on top of the forum again because it has gone so quite that I think people might be madly getting their patents in to secure the first "shaft handle" on the SUP market!
C'mon fess up if cogs are ticking!

No cogs ticking here.

Even Connor only uses that dropped top hand thing about 10% of the time.. The other 90% he uses his paddle the way it's designed to be used.

but, oc paddles used to not have a handle. so when somebody but a handle on top that was ok then

there are times when i use the normal handle and times when i use the grip

the grip is ubeaut for quick sprints, and if the water is choppy and i feel unstable the grip position offers so much more of a controlled body position. the legs and balancing work so much better- much better in rough water surf paddle outs.

in training with mesh mash board wakes it works.
the higher stroke is easy to maintain too if required

the mixing up of muscle groups spreads thework load around

but hey, if people want to close their minds to anything different or new, i'm not worried because i'll know i have an advantage.

however, it does take a little bit of time to get used to it

i have a 27" wide 12'6- no deep deck recess , probably go 26" on the next board now

cheers
