hi guys, great new sport and i believe no sport can be called SUP.
any ideas?
someone mentioned "SWEEPERS"
SUP has to be the most crappest thing around.
Just like playing golf while riding a horse
Maybe shooting some pool while tap dancing could become the new pathetic sport?
I know! Playing cricket on a skateboard
I wonder if surfing while kayaking has been done? that would be lame.
Hang on, that would be SUP wouldnt it? Bunch of Baloney
Green leader,
You don't like SUP? I thinks it's works well. I have heard some call it sweeping, no my cuppa T.
Greenroom,
Sorry to hear that SUP surfing is not in your most adored list. Have you tried it? It really is a good way to make use of small normally un ridable waves, and is a great cross training method to keep you fit during the off season. I noticed your other post also, This is why I asked Laurie to start a new forum for SUP, so we wouldn't get any of the surfers upset by feeling the have to post on every topic to keep cred in their forum. I am suprized that you have gone to the effort to make a special appearance in an outside forum just to try and bag the sport. Anyway, a little history, Stand up paddle boarding had been around for much longer than any other type of surf craft riding, and yes even the short board, which is probably one of the latest additions to enter the ocean. It has a great relevance in the history of ocean paddling (surfing). Maybe don't look at it as a new addition to the line up, by a come back tour from the begginning surfing.
It would be great if you could try SUP with someone who knows what they are doing to get a good feel for what it's like, and if your opinion is the same, so be it, it is not for everyone. But I am sure hundreds will enjoy it.
Regards,
JB

Ps. sweeping hmmm na me no likey might as well call it feather dusting!!! what about a cross between canooing and surfing like canurfing or surnooing lol ok mayb not. thats all i got
Gee, wonder what what would happen if you put a sail on a surfboard? Do we reckon it would be crap to sail while standing on a surfboard...........
Many sports are a hybrid or development of something.
If not, we would all be sitting around the cave getting fat!
Now your talking my language there Mr Bag
A sail on a surfboard is radical
SUP is just another marketing thingy
What is the purpose of a SUP? I guess thats where I dont get it?
Why not use a malibu? Or a retro board?
Im just a little confused over all the hype of SUP.
Its just another over priced board on the market
Greenroom,
SUP is not out to replace or reinvent any of the existing board sports. It is an amazing way to get out on the water when normally condition would not permit.
Surfing, Sup will catch waves or even swells way before they break and continue to ride them through luls were no other surf craft can. The manouverability of the boards is amazing, I surf all boards from 10'6" mal to 9' performance mals, to 6'6" performance shorty's to 6'0" radical fish boards, I have 5 boards in my quiver and have found that sup fills in a space i never knew was there. I can turn my 11'6" sup harder and tighter than my 9' mal, it's amazing!
Paddling, great exersize! Sup is an altimate core muscle workout, most sport work on major muscle groups, leaving out the smaller supporting and core muscles. Sup is by far the best core workout I have ever had, and it shows when I go back to my other sports how much stronger I have become in my core. Also the benefit of standing while you paddle, you see so much more, fish don't seem to flea when they see you, and I have never seen so many dolphins so interested in a surfer/paddler before, About 2 months ago, I paddled with a pack of probably 30 dolphins for over 1 km, it was amazing, they swam literally right next to me the whole way. The sights you see while sup-ing are amazing, well more to the point it's amazing what you miss out on while lying down, or sailing.
Sailing, Sup sailing is something that I wasn't sure was going to take off. But after sailing in about 5-8 knots on maui, over head waves, I was so impressed with the performance in the waves with only a 4.7m sail. It opens up a whole new class of sailing, enabling old skool freestyle moves to be performed on wave faces, waves from ankle high to over head to be riden in very light winds, and well too. I have been windsurfing for over 15 years now, and don't think i have ever had as much fun messing around in light, smooth, sunny conditions ever. This could possibly bring another class to the wave sailing comps in time to come!
So Greenroom, stoked to hear your actually curious. SUP is not a new fad, it's the revival of an old one. Modern construction methods and materials have allowed this great historical sport to come back with performance unimaginable. They first time I SUP surfed was Nearly 4 years ago, and since then my skills have improved every session. Sup never ceases to amaze me, and there is still so much more to learn.
I hope you take the time to try it properly.
Regards,
JB
Sweet JB. Thanks for the insight. And yes I am still curious... BUT... reading your post made me stoked for you but for me it still didnt seem to get me excited.
If I was given a SUP I would find the time to use it. But wouldnt go out and buy one.
I still cant see where SUP fits into wave riding? And where normal conditions would not permit? Im sure riding rolling swells and exploring the open ocean on a SUP would be fun and good for your inner core but riding a breaking wave could be done on a mal yeah?
Anywho... Im not here to argue and I see the point and what ever floats your boat (no pun intended)
Its just a little too weird for me. I think I will stick to surfing and windsurfing.
Currently Im riding a 6 foot retro fish. Twin fin. And that board gets me on waves from knee to overhead No SUP needed
Greenroom,
Did you see some of the shots we got the other day,
This spot is nearly impossible to paddle into on normal surfboards as it's really fat all the way to the rock shelf, then is sucks out and is really fast, we were able to surf in on SUP's because we could catch them early and get through the fast section, the only other people out on this break are bodyboarders pulling into the fast section as closeouts. So there is definately uses for sup in the wave riding side of things were other craft can not make good use of a fun wave.
Also check out youtube, and search on "standup paddle surfing" there is heaps to choose from, like this link

i thought we could call the old guys "paddle pops"
I'm with you on that one JB.
I think a lot of people pronounce it incorrectly SUP as a word is not so cool.
SUP pronounced S U P (as we do with GTS or SUV) is much better.
Had a great Stand up Paddle on Sunday morning with a few guys, set off from Brighton Paddled to Trigg, had breakfast and paddled back, a fantastic morning. On Saturday morning had a bit of a paddle at Cottesloe, a great weekend.
As I don't surf (back issues) and not enough wind to kite or windsurf, it was a real bonus, fantastic complimentary sport.

I think plenty of people have thought of it, It's just the best one is there SUP! The C4 guys use SUB (stand up boards) but I thought this lost the point a bit as you stand up on every surfboard.
Maybe your after something like,
Mega mal-ing super paddle wikid surf mobiles?
SUP, it works! and can be used to greet other sup surfers like "wats-sup" or a language all of it's own, "u sup" "gonna sup tomorra" and many many more!
S.U.P.

JB
I agree with "SUP". Everyone I know pronounces it "S" "U" "P" rather than making it one word. It's smooth and rolls off the tongue. Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine has also taken to the title of SUP. You can check out the site at www.supsurfmag.com.
i think the same with you greenroom, but i think these people sell them for a living so there got to talk them up? but who cares if it looks like stand-up goat-boating
I don't sell em and I haven't even tried one...but I am looking forward to getting in on it and think it will absolutely boom this summer...
SUPing (or whatever you call it) is fun!As Daryl said: You never never know if you never never go! (Ozzie went
)
Have fun standing on the beach you cynical old farts!
Reverse skimboarding?
Lanky-man's surfing?
Bizzaro surfing?
Huck Finn going down the mighty mississippi with the slave on a wooden raft doppleganger lookalike sport?
that last one is a winner i think...looks like he's evading something www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=5589&shownew=on
