Our Dad bought a Cordingley's Surfboard (Dad calls it his Big Woodie lol) in about 1962 from there shop on Hay Street as a teenager. It has been sitting in his shed for over 35 years now, and he is reluctantly considering selling it. We have no idea what it is worth... hoping someone can shed some light on it. Added a couple of pictures to the profile so you can see what it looks like. Thanks in advance for any info. :)
Mate if were you I'd keep it yourself. I'd stripe that dodge paint job and have it restored and hang it in the pool room.
Welcome aboard btw
here is another onehttp://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/palmyra/surfing/vintage-surfboard-1960-s/1018626590 as you can see its in alot better condition
considering the fin has been replaced or reset and the bangs and dings prob 300 bucks at the moment.
is it straight? does it have a twist in it ?
also something that will take the price down is the gel coat all over it, makes you wonder what may be under it. Usually a horrow show.
if i were ur dad and i knew it hadnt been snapped or smashed to peices under the gel coat, Sand it all back, and put a new top coat on it for about 100$ with a polish from a professional
then if straight and with the right buyer u may get around 800-1000$ for it
i believe that's mac's board when he was about thirty years old. pulled it out of the bag at the beach, looked at it and then took it back to that shop. the board was probably still sold as new
Woodie - for my 2 cents that board is rare ...I'd have that stick refurbed carefully and then mounted on a wall if not onsold ... someone will pick it up for sure .... great post mate
As Big Spazz said....make sure you tape up over the decals.....then take some 80 grit to it and take approx. 1/2 the top finish coat off - be gentle. When you have done this dix the dings.....then re-apply a polish coat and sand with 120 gently then 240 wet n dry then 600 W&D then 800 W&D then 1200 W&D for an absolutely smoking looking board........it will look almost new except for the areas where the dings are.
Money schnomey, that there is family history. If you can't afford to restore it now, then wrap it in a couple of sheets and put it back under the house and come back to it when you can.
All I have of my Dad is a tackle box that he built out of a busted arse pallet, it's one of my most treasured possessions. Not quite sure how I'm going to share that between my three boys.
^ That's what I would do if my father was a surfer and his first board was still around, restore and hang it like I said earlier.
What smicko said.. DON'T EVER SELL IT.
I have a watch my dad gave me forty years ago. Priceless.
Deano
its worth more if you keep it in original cond
all well and good to re vamp the old boards but original are the gold
Here is my Cordingley 9'8" fully restored and rideable. This is a great board ! Enjoy.
WOW that's NICE.
Thanks, 62Mac..it is circa 1964 and has a certificate of authenticity and the fin is original. While refurbished it can still be surfed and is watertight.. My dad didn't have one of these..hell he didn't surf ...As there was no inheritance for me (other than hugs and kisses from my dad) I bought it from someone off gumtree and had the work done by an expert in this type of restoration project...nevertheless I like to see them renewed and put in "concourse" ..After all it is just like a vintage car.. you restore it not leave it..rather than decaying.. a lot of the Cordingley's have had a white gel coat applied ( many times not original) to hide dings and it is first necessary to sand it all back and fix the dings.. a lot of work later..etc.. this is the result.Cheers..
