Hey guys, can't show you the board porn pics below without boring you with the story first....

I have been lusting after a McTav Noserider ever since we sold a stunning new lime coloured version of it last year, and also 'cos my own Noosa 66 model is now over 12 years old and has seen better days.

We traded in this beautiful 9'6 McTav Noserider model in the pics below earlier this week from Lindsay who was the second owner. He didn't have much info on who it was originally made for, etc. which is always handy for prospective buyers.

So i had been dying to try it out every day this week before having to put it in the used racks but something always came up and i couldn't.

Anyway, i finally headed to Rainbow first thing this morning and was greeted with full but clean little peelers around 1-2ft...just perfect for testing out whether there was any real love (and not just lust) for this Noserider.

On my second wave, a guy took off way further down the line and eventually the two sections joined up and we flicked off together. We said "hi" and then he looked at the board and said "i think thats my old board". We chatted for a while.

Turns out he was the original owner and sold it to Lindsay (the guy who traded it in). So I had the full history of the board right there after one wave!

PS - Stayed out for 3 hours and had an absolute ball on it. Think I'm gonna have to find room for it in the garage at home.

Yep, she's a stunner all right.

But you know, I actually don't mind cut laps that look a bit rough or double layered.

They've got that rustic sort of a feel to them, they are what they are.

Yeah I know what you mean but someone who is shelling out $1600 for a tinted board would probably prefer clean rail lap cuts. The tinted boards look unreal and the craftsmanship that goes into them is something you don't get with NSP. Sorry BB.

Thanks Sepirott. As for fin placement, i thought since its a noserider its about stability over turning performance so i shoved the fin back a bit and it was still pretty easy to turn. Today was the was the first session on it so i will move it around til i find that mysterious "sweet spot".

I also grabbed our 10" FCS Fluid Foils demo fin (dolphin style, not hatchet) so i will give that a run soon too and assess the difference. I've seen both hatchets and dolphins in these boards (McTav gives you the option of either). - Mark

Chrispy, ok, you know i mean one or the other, not both fins at the same time. Its not a twinnie!

Hope you are on the mend (no thats not another drug name) and will be back in the water soon - Mark

Chrispy here's my take on it....in short, for performance think dolphin and for logging think hatchet.

The dolphin style is just a good all round fin. Can use it as a single fin or part of a tri-fin setup - just depends on the type/size of the board its for. The wide-ish base area gives drive and some hold (when on the nose) while the smaller tip (compared to a hatchet) provides flex and fairly easy entry and exit when engaging it for turns.

The hatchet is really only suitable as a single fin from my experience. It has better hold than a dolphin fin, especially when on the nose, due to its consistent wideness all the way up/down the fin. Thus its use predominantly on noseriders. It is harder to turn but when you do it is a bit more pivoty (if thats a word!) than a dolphin fin.

There are slightly different variations of dolphins and hatchets on the market so excuse a few generalisations I have made. - Mark
