Do you use them much with a mal? saw a couple of nasty incidents this weekend, both at the same spot.

I’ve used them a couple of times many years ago at Dee Why point and Collaroy and I got away with it but I didn’t feel too comfortable and I did scrap my fin a few times.

There are places down here where it’s the only way to get in, like Mona Vale Basin but then it’s a really easy one.

Yesterday this young guy at Collaroy went to jump off the rock pool wall with this beautiful orange mal, looked like a specialist nose rider and the kid was really good. He looked to be no stranger to the break, lots of people knew him.

Anyway, there he was on the edge of the rock pool tentatively moving from one side of the chain fence to the other as he tried to select the right set. I turned away and when I looked back, there he was waist deep on the rocks trying frantically to get his board off the rock pool wall as the sets were smashing him. I thought, there’s no way that board could not have been dinged up, but he was there again this morning competing in a reef riders comp so I guess he was lucky.

The other guy this arvo at the same rock pool jump off was not so lucky. He had a beautiful mactavish that did not look too old and he really must have misjudged it in a big way.

I didn’t see the set he jumped onto but I think it must have been same one I got a wave in because just as I’m paddling back out, I’m right beside the rock pool wall and I look over and see he’s in the same position at the young guy yesterday, standing waist deep where he shouldn’t be, in front of the wall and getting pounded, but the mactavish is wrapped around one of the chain posts on the top- edge of the rock pool and snapped completely in two.

For me it’s just not worth it to try to do the same as a shorty or a foamy just to save a bit of a paddle. That guys decision today has cost him over a grand.

I was just going through the camera and realised that I had taken a few pics before I went in on one of the days I saw this happen.

These are taken from the rockpool where they jump off. The rock ledge is just below it and extends out for 4 or 5 metres. If you stood on the rock ledge, the top edge of the rockpool would be just a bit over waist high.

This is what it looked liked when the sets were coming through on Saturday and Sunday.

This is what it looked like as just an average wave hit the rockpool wall.

So both those guys were getting hit with these as they were trying to get their boards off the chain fence.

I'm surprised both didn't snap.

Great pic's obct,

Ok it was around 1980 at the Cove on a big swell, the headland was packed with landlovers and the guy's that were to scared to go out, cameras everywhere you get the picture.
My mate being a much better surfer than me and who surfed the point a lot now often than me,talked me into the rock jump.
As I was making my way slowly (not that keen ) but my mate insists I'll be fine just follow me he said.I was about two meters behind as we started walking over the rocks with whitewash up to our knees hitting us hard.My mate Steve makes his way to the jump off rock and makes it and starts the paddle with a strong sweep from the south.
Right my turn as the crowd above look on,I wait for the set to pass and off the rock I jump.**** my leggie gets tangled in the rock behind me and instead of landing on my board I land on the rock,I know I am in trouble as the crowd cheer as they do. I try to untangle my leggie before the next set hits me **** too late I get dragged across the rocks and sliced open like a cheese cutter, blood pissing out of both hands, chest, guts and legs. The crowd are all focused on me their entertainment.I eventually make my way around the point and back to the beach,as our car was parked on the headland I had to walk up the hill past hundreds of people with blood coming out of me everywhere, oh that's the guy,oh **** look at him I hear as I make my way to the car I turn to see Steve pull into a eight foot barrel, now I am ****ty.Steve comes in and said **** best waves and surf in years how did you go I did not see you out and then he looks at me and starts laughing as mates do.To answer the question I never rock jump

A twist on the jump rock.
1992, the wife and I go up to Kalbarri for a holiday. The surf was epic, too big for me really. Jakes was a solid 6' and hollow as anything you see in Hawaii. My wife said go on, you came here for a surf, so after dropping her off at the hotel, out I went against my better judgement. No problem getting out, jump off the reef ledge and paddle like hell. Sat out there didn't catch any waves, one of the scariest waves around.

Paddled in, got back onto the reef ledge and started to walk back to shore. Then it occurred to me, don't turn your back to the water. I was only about two metres from the edge of the reef when I turned around and saw 6' of whitewater about to hit me on dry reef. I had nowhere to go and got dragged 20 or so metres over dry reef. Luckily I was wearing a wetsuit but I still made mincemeat of the left side of my body from head to toe. The crowd loved it.

Got back to the hotel the worse for wear but didn't get much sympathy.

I've seen Jakes at 6-8' (didn't go in - just happy to watch), and know what you are saying.

Was amazed how the locals got in and out - just bloody good judgement both ways... one guy flicked out of the inside section that was still overhead and ended up on his feet on the rocks and just strolled back to the car-park like he was getting out of a wading pool - wife and I could not believe it!!
