Any one read it yet, I got it today, just started reading it. So far it's a cracker...
I'd say put it and history of Australian surfing on your Xmas lists boys.http://www.dymocks.com.au/ProductDetails/ProductDetail.aspx?R=9781742700205#.UKSsnmthiK0
And Ted what was the online book shop you mentioned ?
On my recent short trip to the Sunshine I picked it up at newsagent at Sydney airport but then noticed Underbelly Badness starring me in the face. After 10 mins of deliberating, Perish won and so left it on the shelf. On my return flight, I enquired about it at the news agency at Maroochy airport but the stupid bitch at the counter had no farkin idea. She looked up King Kong WTF. I said "you know Kong from Kongs Island fame, Mad Wax, Performers. You know with Rabbit and Chappy Jennings. Then the manager came over and said "Elkington, yes I know" and directs the sheila to look up Elkington under golf. So still looking.
So has anyone read this yet? An interesting interview with him on SN. This book just made my xmas list http://www.swellnet.com.au/news/3329-kong-on-andy-irons-parko-and-surfing-now
I liked these responses......
Swellnet: How does it feel to be the first surfer to come out and give a completely honest account of pro surfing?
Kong: I'm actually proud to do it, it's been a long time coming. I've got to thank Tommy [Carroll] and Rabbit and Kelly and all those guys for their books because they really made me want to write something that's the truth. That's just how it was back then, you know, some people won't like it but that was my life.
Think your gonna cop any grief for what you've written?
I don't care.
Fair enough...
I don't care at all about that 'cause....it's a very fine line, it's about me but there's other people there but I'm not putting them in that same picture. And, you know, I'm kind of fed up with this whole pro surfing thing of people walking around and painting this beautiful picture of themselves - how good they are and all this stuff. It's not right, you know. Look, in a sense it's not bad stuff really, it's recreational drugs really, they're party drugs. We're not talking about EPO or anything like that. And they were the days back then, that was how everyone rolled.
Yep it's a good read, be a good Xmas stocking stuffer.
I liked the earlier part better talking about his family and when he was young and a bit of a wild man, the early tour stuff was good to but once he started to take the tour seriously it dropped off and became just another surfing book IMO, still good though.
I'd recommend it to anyone who knows who Kong is. The first bit off the book is exceptional
Even my GF was reading parts of it and laughing. she had no idea who he was but still found it entertaining.
